    See you all Monday! Let me know your thoughts on what you think happened. The feeling walking around these houses was so bizarre mainly because it feels like they all disappeared

  • @purrfekt

    My guess is that the village died out. The younger generations grew up and left for the cities, leaving older folks who gradually pass away one by one. When they die, surviving relatives (who are living in the city) decline to take over their possessions because its too far/inconvenient to come back or estate taxes are too high. The house is left as is (because of the strong cultural taboo against disturbing the possessions of the dead) and gradually degrades over time.

    Nothing to do with the earthquake.
    There were 18 small hill villages (small groups) with a population of less than 1,500. (1242 in yr1955)
    Since the late 60s, people started moving out due to the decline of timber & coal mining industries. Inconvenient road & transportation as well.
    Also a dam nearby was constructed from 1972 to 1998 had caused more people to leave.
    Now 2 small villages are below water, 10 abandoned, only 6 small villages have less than 100 residents. (104 in yr2013)
    People prefer other spots downhil near the townl. Those who had chosen to stay would eventually pass away as age grows.
    The massage chair is the first generation design from the early 60s.

    There are many empty houses in Japan. Usually, the owners pass away and they either have no family to inherit their property or the children leave it as it is and abandon it. It happens very often in rural areas. Not many people want to farm. There are often law obstacles when buying an abandoned property and/or it's very costly to repair an old house.

    • @cesarhernandez7064
      @cesarhernandez7064 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Technically there is 9 million homes are currently abandoned. Thousand are in ruins since no one was there to repaired the family homes. Also many inherit their parents homes sometimes their own children's don't even want it. Due to isolation, no work, buying groceries and it gets lonely. Their are some mischief who destroy and take some belonging as a souvenir.

    Awesome find and video!! For most likely being abandoned for 20 years everything seems so well preserved. All of the furnishings, like the tv’s, phones, dishes and decor take me back to the 60’s and 70’s! The last house you were in was in almost perfect condition. I see those cats in every Japanese restaurant by the cash register. Maybe they couldn’t return for their stuff due to contamination of some sort. Let us know if you find out what happened here! Great job Harmin!! 👏🏻

      Tara Lewis That’s a Maneki-neko (beckoning cat). It’s said that they to bring good luck to their owner, so many Japanese businesses display them by the entrances of their shops . They supposedly originated in Tokyo, which was named Edo at the time, but others say Kyoto. I’ve some battery operated Maneki-neko and it’s kinda funny and cute to see their paw move, beckoning you to come into their shop.

    I don't think that village was hit by an earthquake. That shelf at 16:23 is still too neatly arranged, if it was an earthquake those cups, bowls, bottles and that old telephone should all be knocked down to the ground. In total contrast to the surrounding rooms and other areas that looks completely destroyed, which is very weird if you think why and how that shelf is not damaged at all.
    Very good video, it really does make you curious what happened here :D

    I'm betting that there was a strong earthquake that hit the village. That would explain the damage to the homes and the randomness of the furnishings. It would also explain all of the household good left behind. Steep hills like that can be very dangerous. Anyway, it's a thought. That "wheel" chair is indeed an old model of a massage chair. I really enjoyed the video. Thanks for all the hill climbing and filming for us.

    • @InfamousCrimeLocations
      @InfamousCrimeLocations  5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Many people keep mentioning earthquake which is very possible as Japan gets tons of them. However, if that were true, it's not like radiation or something where they aren't allowed to go back home. So why didn't they return and at least rebuild or take all their belongings. That's what I dont understand. Thanks carla!

    • @breadofsalt
      @breadofsalt 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I don't think it was an earthquake, I mean look at that shelf at 16:23 still looking neatly arranged. There's no way the bowls, cups and bottles as well as the telephone on top of the TV didn't sustain any damage from the earthquake, while the surrounding areas were completely destroyed.

    I know reading about other abandoned mountain villages in Japan that they usually attributed the economic period between the 70's to 80's as the young people moving closer to cities. This left some of these villages with only the older generation and as they died off their relatives didn't want to the property/didn't have time to do anything with it so they sat abandoned. Not sure if it's true but also supposedly culturally if you weren't a relative to the deceased person(s) who owned the home it's considered taboo to move the personal items as well.

    It's a village that was set up during the building of the dam (wont give location but it is in Saitama) not far from there.
    It's quite common in Japan. The miners and their families finish a job and often move a long way away from where they were based. It cost a fortune to move in japan (other than within the major cities)
    They take the things the cherish most and that will fit in the car , and leave the rest.
    This was a common thing in the boom years, especially for Miners/ Dam builders and other remote construction workers. Also as mentioned before. A few older people sometimes choose to stay on. then pass away.

    A great find Harmin whatever drove those ppl away it was no earthquake i think, did you see any signs on the road that warned ppl too stay away? if they had too leave in 1999 it is very strange that nobody claimed their stuff. The second house on standing on poles would have fallen with a earthquake for sure, so if you now the name of that place perhaps do a google search :-) perhaps it was just the threat of a quake that drove them off. Very nice video thnx.

      Because of the instability, they won't return if it's possible for them to be hurt considering the damages. It's more than likely that those that did escape either couldn't bare with returning to the place or were ordered not to return to the area for safety reasons. Honestly it's not that hard to piece together especially with Japan's issues with geographical structures.
