    Very nice job. I am the unlucky owner of a FORD Windstar. I actually bought this van new and even had it treated with Ziebart? Anyway, anyone familiar with the Windstar is aware that FORD recalled almost 1 million of these rust buckets back in 2010 & 2011 to inspect their subframes and bandage the rear axles (that were snapping in half, resulting in several serious accidents). If the axle or subframe was determined to be too far gone, they offered the owner a fair market credit for the van and kept it. If the axle and subframe were deemed fixable, they put two crappy brackets on the rear axle and four crappy brackets on the subframe with epoxy over the critical failure parts (both control arms and the rear subframe bots) and then returned the van to the respective owner. This is what they did for my van and now my subframe is completely rusted away with the right side sway bar bracket completely gone and a big section of my subframe also gone (rusted away). My van has always been garage kept and only has 150k miles on it. I will never buy another Ford, NEVER !

    Great tutorial video, in looking after older cars I always use a rust killer after initial sanding or grinding, it seeps into crevices and dries ready for primer or underseal, works well even on 20+ year old vehicles for me anyway.

    one more suggestion- after cleaning, treat with phosphoric acid before painting- and POR15 is awesome stuff over acid etched bare metal- it will basically NEVER rust... but POR does NOT stick to paint...i use the rollon bedliner a lot too- but always treat with OSPHO /metalprep / any other phosphoric acid on the market- it creeps between layers and stops rust dead in its tracks, plus paint bites to it really well.

    If there the only rusty parts then that's an easy fix, we use the POR-15 product to internally treat the sub-frames.

    I Used some liquid zinc chromate to pour into cracks and between layers of the steel then let it dry then painted the anti-rust black paint that Tractor supply sells.
    i have a 94 Nissan 4x4 that was 75% rust and cleaned it good like you did then Touch up welded here and there and coated it. Now the Truck is a woods buggy truck hauling wood.

    Try using POR-15. It has proven more than tough for any application I have used it on. POR-15 is a great product for stopping rust and preventing the spread of more rust.

    the best way to repair is to locate all spot welds and bust them to remove the lower plate, sandblast all open sections , replicate this plate in a 11 GA sheet metal then weld it to remaining crossmember using plug welds and continuous welds to replicate the factory assembly taking caution to not warp the crossmember.
    After all this work, apply a good rustproofing paint as Por-15 or something alike
    you'll never on that car ....much better protection than the original one

    THANKS SO MUCH FOR ALL YOUR VIDEOS ON HERE!! My 2000 Accord has been and still is a strong running car & Ive loved it. Im from Maine so the salt is horrible on our cars. Recently they found a rust hole in frame in front of rear tire. So bummed because they said its gotta go. I bought a used Altima, what do you recommend I should spray/paint the underneath of my car with to help prevent rust?? The same as in this video or different? Thanks so much. Where in Maine are you? Oils (fluid film, krown, cosmoline) or paint (zinc rich paint, regular paint). Do not forget spraying inside of frame/subframe.

    As hacked up and patched this sub frame was before you fixed it, I think I would have looked for another donor frame and used it. Buying a replacement frame from a salvage yard in another area of the country that has a dry climate is a good place to source one. Sure, it's fun to blast and patch and restore metal, but in this case you should have found a place to recycle this frame for you! That would have been my choice. Sometimes you have to give up the ghost or the whole vehicle even and start over again with a better candidate for your time, effort and money.

    • @biaohan4358
      @biaohan4358 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I was going to say the same thing. The rusted frame does not have the same strength as a good one and poses safety hazard. Better get another one. If it's some surface rust then the repair is OK, but if it's rusted half way or all way out then a replacement is needed.

    The tone I get from this and other forums is that the subframe / front cradle corrosion problem is no big deal. I wonder if I am seeing information from folks that have a certain level of expertise, giving them a chance to address the problem before actual structural failure while being driven? My wife’s 2000 Saturn LS frame / cradle did fail while being driven; she was so fortunate to have been stranded, unable to move, while driving very slowly. The right, front lower control arm’s front pivot bracket pulled completely away from the frame. The right side half shaft’s inner spline was pulled out of the tranny, and acted as a stiff rod between the spindle and what was still left of the cradle between the sites of the two (2) lower control arm’s pivot brackets. That made the car unable to steer or drive out of the lane of traffic it was blocking. I tell all that, only to ask: why didn’t Buff Whalen Chevrolet, Sterling Heights, MI, tell / warn of the corrosion damage, since they had been doing oil changes and had the opportunity to see the condition of the cradle?

    good job on the repair looks good, and will probably last a long time. I believe that they should used the truck bed coating on all that stuff, and yes I know that it would add weight, and cost but guess what in the long run everyone would be thankful I bet. I have a subaru outback, and the subframe looks horrible I just bought, but I couldn't get under the vehicle to check this area while I was on the lot, but who does that. No dealer wants you to find those secrets of a potential deal breaker.

    Looks great and thank you, but I believe any coating will lift away holding wet and rust in.
    Suggest people linseed oil their underbody. Drill holes where there are double walls and spray in linseed oil hard with frames as they have little access to inside but there are supposed to be drain holes. Use those………if diligent each summer your vehicle should last forever. Due diligence.

    • @ChuddleBuggy
      @ChuddleBuggy 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Interesting point about the coating lifting away from the metal. Do you suppose it will still happen here when he cleaned the surface quite well, and must have used some kind of rust converter before priming and painting and sealing with the bedliner?

    • @saintboudreau1545
      @saintboudreau1545 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      The old farmers had the right idea their farm tools haybalers etc. were left outside they used linseed oil……..you watch your metal in a few years you reapply.
      It does not lift it will wash away after a 2-3-years . I do my trucks underbody and I am not as religious as I should be…….but years go by and oil is still there.
      The dam double walls are bad water salt gets in and you cannot see or get linseed oil in.
      Metal last forever, at least in human terms if you keep out air & moisture.
      BEDLINER bad if it is an insert it holds water. if it is applied it lifts away and traps water.

      @williamcharles9480 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Linseed oil goes way back, as you said. It was around long before there were any of those exotic anti-rust chemicals on the market. I will say that it does protect exposed metal as I have used it on my shop equipment as a rust preventative. I live in Florida where the damp climate will rust bare metal in a heart beat and a coat of linseed oil keeps out rust for several years. A re-application is required from time to time and is the only drawback, however linseed oil is cheap and easily available from hardware, paint stores and home improvement outlets.

    I have to do something like this with my 2001 sunfire. the subframe has cracked at the rear, has numerous rust holes, and needs to be replaced. I have a 98 cavalier that I will be pulling the subframe off of and cleaning, repairing if need be and painting it like you did. I dont have any welding skills but im planning on taking a hobbyist class at a school. then just maybe i might get this car done. But i have a question. do i need to replace any rivets holding the frame on with rivets or can i use nuts and bolts? also do I need a specific type (grade 8, or 5 or something)? I think there are 8-10 bolts and 2-4 rivets holding mine on.

      I just got an estimate for a subframe replacements. With labor it should be about 605$ plus tax. That's not for a new subframe but one from a salvage yard (hopefully in good shape)
      It breaks down to 155 for the subframe and 451 for the labor.
      This shop seems to have pretty reasonable prices so it may differ elsewhere. Some other things that need to be done as well were a bit lower than other quotes I got.
      You can also go on repairpal.com. They provide average/fair price estimates and even list some shops that should honor them.

      How much do you want to pay for a new vehicle any way? How many people could afford to pay $50K for a small economy car any way? Or how about a $100K for a full size truck? If you take reasonable care of them, most of vehicles will last long enough till you are tired of them. Don't let salt build up on them if your home area has winter weather and the roads get salted. Spray it off once a week underneath if you commute to work a longer distance every day. Park in a garage if possible when you're at home. If you buy a new vehicle and you are worried about what it might look like in a few years underneath, get a can of good primer and paint and paint areas underneath that might rust. I did that with a new truck and shot the rear axles, undercoated the lips of the wheel openings on the bed, as well as the wheel housing. Common sense works great if you use it. This is something 90% of the people could do.

    just a curious teen, do you have to remove the engine to remove subframe or is the engine mounted to the main frame

    • @DoSumpthin
      @DoSumpthin  9 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Jamel Ramsook The engine and transmission have various mounting points to the subframe and the body so you just need to temporarily support the engine and trannsmission while changing the subframe. This is often done by securely placing something across the top of engine bay then chaining the motor to it before removing the subframe. There are special tools for this too but many DIY'ers have creatively improvised with logs, lumber, pipes, etc. Just be sure they don't slip and move. I used a chain hoist to the ceiling trusses of my garage which allowed me fine control over the tension however you should never trust a mechanical device like a hoist or jack so be sure to have some way to lock it solid if you go that route. Take care.

He told me due,to the subframe rotted to look for another car . Im going to have autobody SHOP look at it second opinion .lol.... this,guy is,one of tge original chop shops in my town .
