ASEAN is a good trading block. Collective defense or action against China's coercive, aggressive and other malign activities
in the wider Asian maritime disputes is nonexistent. With regards to China's extreme aggression against the Philippines in the WPS,
the Philippines stands alone. ASEAN does not give a rat's ass about what happens to the Philippines. ASEAN is focused on securing their
    nations individually.

ASEAN attitude is very different from us filipinos, we filipinos used of fighting supper power, Spain,U.S and japan in thier era, and we stand to our principle, while ASEAN is base on money and buiseness, you cant really count on them in terms of brotherhood, but we can benifit from them from buiseness. My opinion is forget about them when talking about defense.

Downgrade the importance of this organization if there is still no plan to leave that organization at least minimize the media exposure (and other counter measures) to show that this organization has no substance and is essentially useless. We could conduct trade and diplomacy with our neighbors without any fragments of this organization.

Phillippines itself is a country with 110 million people - Huge population and relatively large country. The Philippines is also a US ally and I do not think the Philippines needs the ASEAN support in dealing with China's threat. In the past, only country in the region is Vietnam who saved Cambodia from China's Khmer Rouge hand but now I do not think that anyone expect to save others from China's hand.

It's a waste of time to deal with ASEAN. They have no interest of helping the Philippines in the issue of the SCS.
I can say that if Japan and the United States are successful in bringing economic prosperity to the Philippines, it does not matter for the Philippines if they are isolated from ASEAN.
ASEAN countries only care for themselves, it's a useless organization. China will dissect them one by one. ASEAN infrastructures are debt loans from China. ASEAN countries will exchange money over unguided principles.
The more economically sustainable the Philippines is, the more they will resist China and retain a good relationship with the West, as well as Japan, South Korea, Australia, and New Zealand.
If Japan and the United States can not demonstrate that they can't counter China's belt and road initiatives, they will lose the Indo-Pacific support.
It's very critical that it should work, or else......

So why should ASEAN ruin its relations with China for the Philippines's fantasy? The United States, Japan, South Korea, Australia, New Zealand? Sorry, you Philippines are not on the same table with them, you are just a dish on the menu. But honestly, what was the Philippines expecting? Even during the most recent ASEAN meeting, there was hardly any coverage of its representatives. The Philippines is practically digging its own grave as we watch, and it is only natural for ASEAN to distance itself from the Philippines' so - called interests. Regardless of the present underlying issues - as a long - term "investment" or sorts, the Philippines has slid down from being what arguably was Southeast Asia's top country to the least productive one. It's quite the other way around - there is no reason for ASEAN to "need" the Philippines at all. The Philippines has to stop this unhealthy delusion that it's a major player in the international sovereignty game when it's just another potential Ukraine, albeit a tiny one, in the attempt to Balkanize greater Eurasia. Even the South Koreans and Japanese still refer to themselves as "occupied countries." The Philippines simply does not present itself as a serious argument while referring to itself as "America's Little Brown Brothers."

Japan and the Philippines are cornerstones of US policy to keep Asia poor and divided. This policy was articulated in the top-secret U.S. Foreign Policy written 76 years ago.
    February 24, 1948, Declassified U.S. Foreign Policy:
Furthermore, we have about 50% of the world’s wealth but only 6.3% of its population. This disparity is particularly great as between ourselves and the peoples of Asia. In this situation, we cannot fail to be the object of envy and resentment. Our real task in the coming period is to devise a pattern of relationships which will permit us to maintain this position of disparity without positive detriment to our national security. ... that Japan and the Philippines will be found to be the corner-stones of such a Pacific security system and that if we can contrive to retain effective control over these areas there can be no serious threat to our security from the East within our time.
Taiwan was added to the Pacific security system after Chiang's army retreated to the island of Taiwan in 1949. South Korea was added after the Korean War in 1953. The attempt with Vietnam, Laos, and Cambodia was abandoned in 1975. The 1989 attempt in China failed. The 2019-2020 attempt in Hong Kong also failed.
The US did not promise to make the Philippines rich, it wanted to use the Philippines to keep Asians poor and divided.

ASEAN should never be part of SCS issue since most ASEAN nations are not part of the issue and prefers neutrality like Singapore, Cambodia, Thailand and Sri Lanka. Those nations affected by Chinese aggression should create a new group apart from ASEAN since they are directly affected by the issue. This new group should file a collective protest or a case in the permanent court of arbitration to deal with the issue. Don't drag ASEAN since not every nation in ASEAN is affected by the issue. A very western narrative based perspective lacking insights gained from direct exposures and experiences. President Bong Bong of the Philippines is allowing his country to be used as a condom by his former slave masters , to be discarded once his usefulness is no longer. As well, he's personally compromised by a conflict of interest over his family's ill-gotten wealth left behind by his disgraced father ! For more insightful and indepth perspectives on China's peaceful rise, issues over the South China Sea, Taiwan and the role ASEAN could be playing going forward, listen to some of the talks given by some of Singapore's retired, senior Ministers like Kishore Mahbubani, George Yeo or even the late PM Lee Kuan Yew.
This discussion unfortunately, lacks meat and is merely an echo chamber for western narratives.
