Great advice Gary! I recall when I was breeding emeralds in the 80's, it wasn't unusual, even if I delivered my well started captive born babies locally, they would go off feed. Often I suspected the inexperienced new owners didn't really know how to get them feeding - but usually, after I instructed them a bit over the phone they would call me back in relief that they fed. So, even a captive born emerald baby after being shipped - one should assume they have to be "started" once again, by keeping them quiet, in a dark corner for 1 or 2 weeks...letting them get used to their new environment...new smells, etc., cycle them with periods of humidity and drier periods, then mist them heavily at dusk and try a smallish live hopper. If they still seemed stressed, wait another week or 2. they're not gonna die in a month if they don't feed unless they're in really bad shape. Emeralds are generally really, pretty hardy snakes, just different from other breeds in some very specific ways.
Wild caught babies or dropped babies from gravid are not at all that attractive to me, thinking about the undue stress they've gone through before I would get them. You just never know! If I were buying wildcaught today, I would buy subadult to adult from an extremely trusted source. But I probably wouldn't buy wildcaught northerns or basins these days unless it was absolutely necessary. Pay the price and realize that prices are high because nobody's breeding emeralds like rabbits! Only very experienced breeders are having regular success, so pay the price and buy from the really good, trusted breeders!

Thanks Gary! Im not sure that even experienced keeps appreciate how challenging emeralds and GTP's can be. I'm experienced w/ amazon tree boas and even I ended up losing 2 GTB's, I bought them from a sketchy wild importer here in NJ so I went in with my eyes open and they were priced accordingly but confident that I could support them. I was shocked how tough the wild caught stuff is. I leaned an important lesson DESPITE watching your video on the subject.

Hey Gary. Binged few of your old videos always great info. That carpet baby I got from you is doing great. Eating like a champ. Question for you. If you remember, what size heat panels (watts) do you use for your 3" and 4"s. I struggle sometimes finding that perfect amount of watts to properly heat 3x2x2s cages with a good gradient across the cage. PVC is so efficient it holds that heat well. Doesn't always allow a good gradient horizontal. I'm looking to change mine and downsize in watts for my 3's to see if that does better to the heat gradient.

Gary, I've been watching all of your videos and a few others, learning and prepping for getting my first GTP hopefully in a few months. Im glad I didnt fall into the "captive bred/Farm Bred" pitfall but I do have some questions and hopefully you can help steer me in the right direction
All my other snakes I got from Brian Barczyk (rip) as he's local to me and I'd want to stay USCBB for my GTP but the breeders I'm finding out there, while reputable seem to unfortunately be offering only designer types with price tags of $2500+. As a first time GTP I'd like to keep it simple with a standard locale coloration at a more reasonable price but well established, healthy and eating. If you have any or know of anyone within the community that could help out that would be awesome. My timeline for ownership would probably be like mid to end of April at the soonest. Thanks!

Imported herps should not be sold to the inexperienced public prior to proper quarantine , and acclimation process....
This often includes some antibacterial and or deworming , and anti parasitical medications along with assuring the imported animals are stable and feeding consistently.
I have been an avid herp enthusiast for over 40 years.
I have been a part of almost every facet of the herp world from import / export to wholesale / retail, breeder , and have had a large collection of many herps over the years.
Some negative parts of the animal trade never change.....
These peeps who rapidly flip unhealthy herps on the cheap have always pissed me off .....
They hurt the industry and private keepers who have spectacular detailed husbandry practices.....
You ultimately receive what you pay for.....
If the price seems to good to be true....
    It is exactly that....
Save up and purchase captive bred from the proper experienced peeps.
Leave the imports to the professionals who understand how to acclimatize the imported specimens and implement proper husbandry...
    Great clip...
    Informative and necessary...
    Respect little elf dude....
    Your logo is aok....lol.....

I can't have a conversation and decision with the wife if I haven't gathered my information from "you" first.

    • @ChrisHoustonRN
      @ChrisHoustonRN 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

It’s just a way too common excuse, and isn’t limited to snake sales. If someone was up front at the start, stating that they had some questions because they’re researching and aren’t quite ready to buy, that’s fine! When someone comes along acting like they’re ready to buy, but then a few hours later says they’ve “gotta ask the wife” first, 90% of the time they’re flaking and won’t be back.
The funny part is that people actually think they’re being slick. I’d respect someone more for having the balls to say they changed their mind and thanking me for their time. No hard feelings.

The problem with trying to get a captive born and bred, is most of what I've seen are elitist breeders and only sell to specific people. I've been looking for a northern for a long time now, and it's tough. I've been burned from morphmarket already with a supposed CBB, so won't do that again.

breeders are often sold out before babies are ready to go, get to know breeders and you might be able to get one from their next clutch, they are not being elitist, or keep an eye on Gary, he sometimes had some for sale
