Great interview, and thanks Tim for sharing this peak into the business. It only confirmed what I had presumed about Tim and the Shmee150 business. It is never an accident when something succeeds over a long period. It is smart hard work.
True... people with money have that money because most of the time they've worked for it, and that's just what they do...work. And here we are enjoying them sharing all this lovely stuff.
I would say it's the same with a lot of people. its pretty simple really, finding out what people want, making what people want, posting it when people want, say first thing in the morning, lunch time or in the evening etc, im sure there are lots of other bits and bobs, like colours, transitions even angles etc if you really look into it. but success never comes as a surprise
Thanks for stopping by Jonny! Pleasure to have you to visit my new garage and chat about it all. Will never forget when we went car spotting together back in 2013 on Fifth Gear.
I would have liked to hear Jonny P mention a little more about his "old skool" car background. As you are Definitely are of the "new skool" of TH-cam car enthusiasts!
Tim once very kindly took me out for a meal with his mate when I worked at a motorshow in Glasgow (and they drove in an Aston) . We spent all evening chatting about cars and many things in between. He was an incredibly genial guy, who inspite of having driven every vehicle you could think of never boasted or bragged. Its an utter shame people try to put him down as he is one of the good guys!
That was good. Tim should do more of this because it shows him in a different light. Also was good to hear two TH-camrs talking about what it’s like working as a TH-camr as I don’t think many people understand what it’s like.
Apart from literally every automotive TH-camr ever making videos about what its like to be a TH-camr! Tim does do more of this, he does interviews like this with everyone.

Wow. Thought it was just me. I can’t get past “Hello, I’m Scmhee…” without wanting to throw my phone out of the window. Thanks chaps, I’ll have a watch…”

Thanks Jonny (and when are you coming on my channel to talk bikes??)...
You know what, that was a brilliant interview. We can all make assumptions about our TH-cam content providers, but this was particularly eye opening for me. Tim came across as a genuinely nice guy. Most of us can't imagine the time and stress that goes into producing regular interesting videos for YT. Johnny, you're doing a service with this series, so hats off to you for that. Tim, go on holiday mate. Your subscribers will still be here when you get back 👍
Me Being a car nut i know Tim - not personally- but have followed him for years and years , nice to see him talk and get to understand how his channel and world works ! Cant understand why people diss himat all? Great content from Jonny as per normal - Like these interviews of other famous car boffs - love it!
I worked with Tim whilst I was Product Manager at Chevrolet and he was always hardworking, clued up and reliable. More that can be said for some other influencers!
Jonny, great content and great listening to the other side of Tim. Having followed Shmee150 for some years, you can tell his love for cars and passion for tech. But what’s refreshing is his behind the scenes dedicated mindset and business acumen.
Same, I don't understand the level of hate. It took me a while to get into the channel, but when I did, I always looked forward to the next video and enjoying the passion he has.
That was a good watch. Its nice to see Tim in a different situation and one not created by one of his TH-cam friends. Its good to listen to a relaxed, friendly and informative chat. Thanks Johnny.
It's nice to see the human behind Shmee. I don't think I will ever get on with his content, but I can now appreciate what he is doing. Great video Jonny!
This was such a fun video to see. I’ve been a fan of Tim’s since his very early days and have met him and chatted on his US tour. He’s genuine and very down to earth. Thanks for taking the time to interview TH-cam personalities and show us the stories behind the camera. BTW-you have GOT to remix the audio and combine the channels.
Imagine how successful the trolls would be if they put all that negative energy in to something positive. Another great ‘chat’ Jonny, I wonder how many people are now sat there thinking ‘oh.... I made a mistake about shmee ’ 🧐 (most will never admit it though)
@@oliverl2172 That was supposed to be a joke, but I guess you took it seriously. You are dreaming, my man. Red cameras are super expensive and are quite heavy, making them difficult to carry around for extended periods of time. He would have to get a rig to carry it on (which would be too cumbersome). Tim does a majority of the filming himself, so how do you expect any of that to work? How would he be able to film the inside of a car? He simply couldn't do it. You, on the other hand, seem to think that it's possible. I'm wondering what kind of filming experience you have to know all of this. Please... do tell me how you'd make these videos with a red camera on your own.
I used to subscribe to Shmee many moons ago when there weren’t that many car bloggers on TH-cam. After a couple of years or so I became tired with the format as it was too formulaic and a little predictable… so I moved on. However I noticed over the years his meteoric rise on social media, he certainly knows how to reach his audience. Jonny your laid back interview gave Tim the opportunity to dispel some of the myths and hopefully banish a few trolls. I really liked it. I still won’t be subscribing to Shmee’s channel as I prefer a more eclectic mix … obvs yourself, Harry’s Garage, Carfection, etc… but now I understand the business model behind his content… and that makes sense. Btw… I once met Tim at a Goodwood meet and he was a thoroughly decent bloke down to earth and polite. Great content as always Jonny. 👍👍👍👍
Another great video Jonny. Really enjoyed that and getting to know a bit about Tim and seeing that he’s a thoroughly nice guy. I’ve followed a similar path to my TH-cam channel, eBay trading, filming friends and travel before coming back to my love of cars. Hope to have a KHTV museum some day 👌😂👍
My god! I had only a few, minimal samples of Shmee over the years and didn’t follow him for some reason or other (I thought it was because he swore way too much for my taste, but he denies that he swears at all), but I thought I’d give him the benefit of a doubt, as your interviews get to the real person, and, apparently, he’s a really, genuinely nice guy. Thank you so very much for this interview. You’ve changed my mind. Now, I just have to catch up on 11,000 videos…
Jonny - Great channel! I appreciate your your quiet humility, enthusiasm and respect you show to others you invite on your channel, including your viewers. I also appreciate that you are not about all those new big dollar "super Cars" that Schmee is into (though you are willing to...dabble....). I like your taste in cars (thought I want a Rover P6 or and SD1 over that Austin Allegro!). I'm more of the Charger and Impala person as well. Keep up the great work! Great interview!
Pretty awesome video. I’ve watched shmees videos here and there, stopped for awhile, but came back and been a subscriber for over a year. As a fellow automotive TH-camr, almost everything he said in this video was almost exactly how I am when it comes to personal life, TH-cam, and my backstory. I wouldn’t be able to articulate it like Tim but it’s eerie how similar we are. I’m still a small TH-camr but hopefully one day I can share my story like Tim did and show viewers the other side of me. Again, awesome video!! Love these type of interviews. 😎🤙🏼
Nice conversation. Heard more about Tim's background again. I met Tim on the Nordschleife when he had his Porsche 911 GT3 and just lost his rear number plate on the highway, and then take the time to talk to you, Tim is a special person.
Many thanks for this Jonny - I watch Tim's channel on a regular basis because I have a real interest in the automotive industry. But this interview has given a good bit of insight into the person behind Shmee150, and a lot more respect and appreciation for him because of it. Many thanks to those involved. 👍🏻
That was great to get an insight into what, why and how Shmee 150 started, progressed and continues with excellent TH-cam content. A big thanks to both of you.
Me neither but when you listen to him brazenly explain that it is a business and he is playing every angle possible to achieve success then you just have to take your hat off. You, me, even Tim himself don't have to like 'Shmee', but it sells, and that's all that counts.
Great video. Unfortunately there will always be people that want to throw stones. Keep up the great content guys. I think the vid's are great. Keeps my dreams alive 👍👍👍
Tim works really hard and so he's definitely one that deserves all that he's earned. I don't watch him that often but I do enjoy a good Shmee video every now and then.
Tim is an absolute gent. Met him is sydney when he was touring Australia. He stayed and chatted with people and took photos for 3 hours despite also starting to rain.
I'll be the first to admit having followed him for a small time I had some preconceived ideas about him. This video completely changed my opinion of him, fantastic interview!
Watching Shmee got me into cars, I’m past that content now, it doesn’t satisfy my geekiness but it’s been really interesting to hear about the channel. Props to you Tim, good job
I've watched some of Shmee's TH-cam content over the past few years and if I'm honest, it just pee'd me off. Before everyone jumps on me and puts the boot in, I take my hat off to Tim who has obviously put the effort in and continues to do so and as a result has made a success of what he is doing. And yes, I am just a jealous middle aged fat bugger !! Thanks Jonny and Tim for your channels and great videos.
Pleasant fellow. Watched a few of his videos around 2011/2012. That is about it. Rarely since. But understanding his goals and ambitions with cars etc., and having a similar background, I certainly appreciate his environment much more now. Thanks for the episode, mate.
Watching on a tv surround, Tim's audio would get really quiet and then back to normal-ish. Johnny's audio was definitely higher and consistent though. I had to watch with the volume really high.
Didn't know anything about shmee before this video, seems like a nice guy. One thing I know, I like the mixture of dependability and outside the box thinking that goes into the late brake show, don't stop the honest, hilarious and passionate style we have been soaking up. Another great interview. Thanks Jonny!
Had a super rich upbringing, and everything laid on a plate for him, so yes he was always going to be wealthy even if he never lifted a finger himself.
I was only vaguely aware of Shmee, seen one or two videos, tried not to get hooked into this video but failed. Such an engaging show and interview. Nice one.
hahah, im wondering how many dislikes this is going to get he's very Marmite, but can't fault what he has accomplished, i think the on screen persona puts people off.
This was a good watch! I've watched Shmee150 for quite a few years and really love his content, but now I see I'd like even more to watch some videos with Tim in his professional side like this, it was super refreshing to watch the interview and see him under a new light.
Hi. Watched this sort of by accident, while browsing through the pistonheads forums. Excellent interviewing style, Jonny. I admit I did assume Shmee was a rich guy showing off his cars, I'm now considerably wiser that the channel is a hard-nosed business venture. Thanks again.
There are a lot of "influencers" on TH-cam I get bad vibes from, but I've always thought Tim seemed like a genuine chap. His content isn't really my cup of tea but I've always respected his obvious love of cars.
A quite extraordinary story, much there I was not aware of . Tim is clearly a highly intelligent chap and with a very strong business drive and a likable personality. The sheer volume of video output is little short of astonishing and sustained over a decade already you cannot help but admire the effort he puts in. The memorising of vehicle facts and figures on a newly announced model is way beyond anyone else reviewing cars . It is strangely compelling viewing .Close to a billion views is amazing .The Switzerland analogy is a good one ! Well done Jonny in teasing out the background - good programme .Very well filmed incidentally too.
After listening to Tim talking about finance, I am really impressed with his dad!!! He really ensured that Tim turns out to be who he is today (not demeaning Tim's hard work) regardless of which career he chose! Impressive fatherhood! :)
I just resubscribed again to Shmee150, what a great story. Past subscriber that believed all the lies that he was a rich kid , daddy's money so I unsubscribed., I had no idea of his work ethic and hard work. Well done 150, perception changed 180 degrees, Thanks Jonny for this post. Supercars not my first love, but if I need an update, Shmee150 ! I'm 62 and he is teaching me !
Just a fabulous channel, as always, and such a great and honest interview. Have loved following Shmee’s journey for a while, but to get his insight is fascinating. A truly humble gentleman.
This is such a fantastic interview to get to see the other side of Tim and getting a more personal insight in to his rise to success this what makes him such a easy person to watch as he is down to earth regardless of his success
Really interesting to hear Tim speak as himself rather than his onscreen alter ego. Not normally a Schmee150 fan but you have shone a light on the man behind it all and he is more likeable and interesting than I have given him credit. Excellent again Mr Smith.
that red subaru 'leone' estate we DID have over here. it was what came before the Legacy estate. my GP had one in the 90s. In the UK they were just called the Subaru 1800 Estate
Shmee is probably one of the first TH-camrs I ever subscribed to back in the early days. He looked like a keen teenager/twenty something then and I haven’t watched any of his content for ages. Good to see Tim is still going and sounds a lot more down to earth in this chat.
I get it he's marmite , but he explained himself well, he's seen it as a business from day one . He's a bread head ££ . People bitch on about him but hats off to him . He's had brilliant ideas from the outset , he's obviously worked his arse off . Fair do's . That voice though 🤣
The higher pitched is actually an youtube engagement hack. Time spent increases for quite a bit and increases retention on technical side (like & subscriber as well as any call to action responses), as well as it will engage younger generations a lot more. Very important as the younger generations are quite valuable on the engagement and views numbers side, as they have more time, they spend more time, they are more curious (as they don't have the older knowledge, so they will see more videos). In sum, everything he does, even if annoying, has a reason to exist.
Agree, fair play to him, but I'm not a fan and it's alright not to be. Trouble is if you say you don't like someone and give your reasons for not liking them, you're labelled a troll, bigot, jealous or whatever when in fact it's a valid reason or reasons for not liking him. Can't knock him for his success though, clearly he does appeal to plenty.
this was awesome. i have been following shmee150 for 7-8 years and learnt more about Tim/Shmee in this 36 min than watching 20 mins a day, for 7-8 years

He's a complete knob.
Pleasant fellow. Watched a few of his videos around 2011/2012. That is about it. Rarely since. But understanding his goals and ambitions with cars etc., and having a similar background, I certainly appreciate his environment much more now. Thanks for the episode, mate.
Audio isn't great through headphones it's only coming out one ear at a time, not sure if it's something you can fix?
I think R and L channels are switched. It's a bit confusing.
I had to put my headphones on the wrong way round as the left channel was J and the right was S as I looked at them.
Yeah. I noticed the voices coming out from the opposite speakers to their seating positions.
Watching on a tv surround, Tim's audio would get really quiet and then back to normal-ish. Johnny's audio was definitely higher and consistent though. I had to watch with the volume really high.
@@asa_williams I had no problems with the volume.
Didn't know anything about shmee before this video, seems like a nice guy. One thing I know, I like the mixture of dependability and outside the box thinking that goes into the late brake show, don't stop the honest, hilarious and passionate style we have been soaking up. Another great interview. Thanks Jonny!
This guy was going to be a success, whatever he did - super smart, great business head, awesome work ethic.
He surrounds himself by successful people as well
Had a super rich upbringing, and everything laid on a plate for him, so yes he was always going to be wealthy even if he never lifted a finger himself.
I was only vaguely aware of Shmee, seen one or two videos, tried not to get hooked into this video but failed. Such an engaging show and interview. Nice one.
Tim knows his onions, a smart very hard working guy whom deserves everything he gets and has.
Great video. Great chat. Thanks for taking the time to make it.
Not sure if I'll manage to watch this through but I'll try!
hahah, im wondering how many dislikes this is going to get he's very Marmite, but can't fault what he has accomplished, i think the on screen persona puts people off.
Brilliant insight - you asked all the questions I've wanted to ask Tim!
You should mix both of your audio channels as mono. With separate channels (and inverted) like this it is a bit annoying.
Yes!!
Nice interview anyway. It went by so fast 😁
So annoying
Really good interview of a very misunderstood character. Good work Jonny.
This was a brilliant insight to Shmee and his history and work, thank you!
This was a good watch! I've watched Shmee150 for quite a few years and really love his content, but now I see I'd like even more to watch some videos with Tim in his professional side like this, it was super refreshing to watch the interview and see him under a new light.
Nothing but respect for Tim - I'm not sure anyone on the internet works harder…
Hi. Watched this sort of by accident, while browsing through the pistonheads forums. Excellent interviewing style, Jonny. I admit I did assume Shmee was a rich guy showing off his cars, I'm now considerably wiser that the channel is a hard-nosed business venture. Thanks again.
Did you screw something up here Jonny?
My left ear has really enjoyed it so far..
Left and right but the wrong way around!
@@neilwilliams2907 lol yeah, oops :D
Doesn't need to be panned so hard anyway. Not a good idea.
i just turned on mono audio on ios worked a charm
Great episode! I had just gotten caught up on some of Shmee's recent videos when this popped up - imagine that.
There are a lot of "influencers" on TH-cam I get bad vibes from, but I've always thought Tim seemed like a genuine chap. His content isn't really my cup of tea but I've always respected his obvious love of cars.
That camera position with Shmee, GT, Aston and Yaris is epic!
I just don't like Shmee. Now i know why. Thanks for bringing Tim to the fore and explaining what Shmee is. I like Tim. Very enjoyable chat
The stereo mix is so weird. Tim's on the left, but his voice is coming from the right, and Jonny's the opposite.
What a great watch! Thank you guys
Good video Johnny, definitely changed my view of Tim for the better that's for sure! Sound wasn't great though, Tim was very quiet.
This is what I ended up saying to myself! :D..minus the GP bit..
Shmee is probably one of the first TH-camrs I ever subscribed to back in the early days. He looked like a keen teenager/twenty something then and I haven’t watched any of his content for ages. Good to see Tim is still going and sounds a lot more down to earth in this chat.
Got to admire Tim’s work ethic and dedication.he’s built his brand doing something he loves…..well done Tim.
Yes agree he's done well for himself and like the way he deals with haters he just bats them away with style
Great interview! Thanks Johnny!
I don't like his videos, but what he has achieved is impressive on many levels.
this was awesome. i have been following shmee150 for 7-8 years and learnt more about Tim/Shmee in this 36 min than watching 20 mins a day, for 7-8 years
I think that’s the first time anyone may have seen a glimpse of who he really is, seems like an alright chap. Is he coming to Betteshanger??
Check out a Podcast he did on BTG;

Some people are just driven, respect to Shmee. He has worked hard to get where he is, fascinating insight into life as a TH-camr .
