    You randomly popped up on my feed. Great work! It's nice to have a community to help out. I have some more tips for maintaining moisture.
    Most moisture loss is due to wind and sun. Your best tools to fight evaporation are going to be shade and windbreaks. Find where your prevailing winds come in, and try to add barriers/obstacles to break that wind. Longterm this can be hedgerows of fruit bushes, but in the short term it can be anything - pallets, barrels, rocks, benches, chairs, etc.
    Then try to get some shade up. Even if you just dumpster dive for a bunch of semi-broken patio umbrellas, lay out some sheets on posts. Whatever you can do to shade the soil, especially during the hot hours. Your plants will be fine, as long as they get about 6-8 hours of sunlight per day.

Rather than be discouraged about losing so many years of work at my previous homesite, after watching your video, I have become encouraged and hopeful, about what I can accomplish in the next two years on my twenty acres. Thanks for the video, and keep sharing, learning, and planting!!

    Ah I am so pleased to have found your channel. Well done on such stunning videos and music is a delight. I am living on a farm and we are building a container home on the land. Out ground is nothing but rocks. I have a dream to recreate something like your back yard. But the trouble is I have no idea where to start. I did grow a few summer plants and eating my own home grown food is intoxicating. I want more.

      Hi Natalie, that sounds like my friend Lara who I'm helping with her food forest - her property is nothing but rocks too, it's so challenging!! Luckily she has another friend with a backhoe. Her neighbors used jackhammers to plant their trees 😂 not exactly the relaxing experience one hopes to get from gardening. We planted several acacia trees as I read they help loosen the soil and make it easier to plant later. If I was to start all over on my property, I probably would have started smaller so as not to get so overwhelmed and I would have started with acacia trees first. It's tough in the beginning - but don't give up! Even if you spend five minutes just doing a little something around the land, over time it adds up. Sending you love and encouragement as you realize your dream 💕

    As a former permaculture teacher I can say, you picked a difficult climate. We were on a place in NorCal for 10 years and after a winter with 9" of rain and huge fires getting closer every year, we gave up and got out. The trouble with what you're doing is ALWAYS going to be enough moisture to break anything down,. (We had five year old cardboard in the garden-still not broken down-also, VERY bad idea in fire-prone climates). And when you don't have unlimited free access you end up paying a lot for it, just like all that compost and labor...It's possible to remediate a site, but let's face it, it takes a ton of time and money....Good luck-I hope it gets better.

  • @heyphilphil
    @heyphilphil 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Just copy Back to eden and Ruth Stout and Eric Toensmeiers principles. then...
    -Compost ( thermo and fungal)
    -mulch/leaves
    -cover crops
    -worm castings
    -minerals ( rock dust, green sand, ground Oyster shell)
    Is all you'll ever really need.
    That's what I teach at my farm.

    I'm so glad you popped up on my TH-cam feed. Good luck with your course and I'm anxious to hear everything that you have learned. I think that in time the wood base of your hugelmounds will charge with moisture now that they are protected and will be increasingly productive in years to come. I am in south central Iowa and we are facing more and more desertification what with conventional agriculture, so I am very interested in proactive moisture banking. I'll be back.

    the water storing technique looks really great and I will try to apply that in my backyard as well! There's only one question, that I have: Wood chips are also used to make the soil more acidic when it is too basic. I would be afraid that the ph would become too acidic after some time. Did you experience this with that method in your video?

    My dream is to get a big piece of decimated land and use swales/permaculture to restore it. So much of our problems are because we've depleted the water that would normally get into the ground. I am planning restoring the forest in my backyard. It is supposed to be 8 inches of loam, 6 inches of clay then rock. I have about 4 inches of clay. My neighbors are in a 'war on trees', with chainsaws and wood chippers going every week. I'd like to get the wood chips and mix them with spoiled vegetables and clean leaves but I am sure my 'tree hater' neighbors would object so I need to find a plot of land I can do some composting and mixing. I'm thinking about a series of short retaining walls on the sides of the house rather than a steep ravine slope. If anyone has any ideas, I would welcome them.

    • @Goldifarms
      @Goldifarms  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's too bad your neighbors are waging war on the trees! It sometimes feels like an uphill battle here too, but I'm hoping that people will begin to see there are other ways of existing with nature - ways that are much more harmonious and healthy. I can't wait to hear how your backyard project goes or if you end up getting a plot of land. I'm finding my backyard is a good place to learn and practice before one day getting an off-grid homestead somewhere far away from the freeway 🌿

    I'm not sure when this video was posted; so, this might be an old video. Not sure. Anyway, I just wanted to say that I am proud of you for sticking with it! I've been on my own journey; and, I regenerated my soil over a season. I used several varieties of sunflowers to do so. It was absolutely amazing to enjoy while I waited patiently/impatiently :) for the SF's to work their wonders. I have to admit-it was like a jungle. I had some mammoth sunflowers that were like trees. The tallest one was a good 25 ft tall. It had a head on it the size of a garbage can lid. What came after the season was what I can only describe as painful. Not only did the beautifilled Sunnies die; but, they left very hard stumps to remove. As much hard work as it was; I was sure it would be worth it. We recently finished tilling- (by hand!) AND the soil was A-LIVE(!) Lots of earth worms, grubbies, and deep rich and dark in color. All good signs for a healthy eco-growing system. Yes, straw is your Friend. Also, if you leave some natural weed patch, the critters will likely eat that instead of your veg. I'm happy to have found your channel and this video in particular because i am looking at interesting growing practices and ideas that are perhaps not the typical ways of food growing and living. Thank you kindly.

It’s been so helpful having a channel to connect with likeminded people who know there’s a more beautiful way to live and collectively we are exploring how to get there not just physically but also in our hearts and minds. I know we will one day be rewarded greatly for cultivating the soil of our hearts- and until then, I’m glad we can share stories and ideas for improving the land that’s been placed in our care. Much love to you on your journey and I’m looking forward to hearing more about the life you are bringing to your soil and the light you are sharing with others 🌱☀️💛

      Totally! There are a lot of vineyards in this area, and I often wonder how amazing it would be if they were all food forests instead, and we could pick fresh food in the shade of a forest rather than go to a grocery store. I think if we hold such a vision, it could become reality ✨

    Seems like you can grow anything in zone 9! Great job! I live in zone 6b on a small hill that faces North in the mountains of southeast KY. Most of the things I grow must be shade lovers or partial shade lovers, and oddly, anything that grows on vines! Lol. It’s a challenge for a single mom with little money, but I’d love for my little hillside to provide all our needs. Luckily, I have 3 wells on the property and seldom have to water. It’s crazy. I love the mountains. You’re doing a great job. Keep up the great work!

      Thank you Jennifer 🙏🏼 having grown up in Indiana I am amazed at how much can be grown here, but every place has its pros and cons. What a beautiful gift you’re providing for your children- not just wholesome food but a space on the mountains, I too love the mountains so much and it was always my dream to live in them. Even though I’m right on the freeway, I love the view of the hills in my backyard. So glad we connected, blessings on your journey 💛⛰💛

    Hey you were in my feed, Congratulations on the new channel! I'm always looking for more homesteaders that I like. I really like the information you are providing on your design, and your willingness to address your disappointments you've had along the way, so I've subscribed. :D I'm planning to start my own channel, and I only hope it looks half as good as yours - Great work! I'm originally from AZ... We've been working abroad on some land for almost 5 years, and I know how frustrating it can be. We lost too many young trees this past summer because of drought... Looking at your small permaculture design is very inspiring for me! I look forward to more!

    • @Goldifarms
      @Goldifarms  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hello 💛 thank you so much for watching and reaching out 🥰. I financed it myself. Doing everything I could to try to keep costs down as I was on a budget for sure! It was pretty much my friends helping but in the very beginning I placed an ad on the Craigslist community page and I had a few volunteers show up from the community as well which was really awesome.

      Thank you Rosemary ☀️💛 for your encouragement. Yes it’s a challenge with the heat, but I was inspired to see TH-cam documentaries where people gardened even in the desert - and that gave me the motivation to keep going. Will it ever be done? Probably not- but the amazing thing about a garden is if it keeps getting love it keeps getting better.

    Interesting! I'm in Zone 5 in the Black Hills, South Dakota and it's very dry here with bitter cold winters and blazing hot summers. I have my backyard homestead which is small but am continuously editing and adding to it as I also want to be more self reliant and dispense with the "system" as much as possible. I'm happy to have found you and look forward to hearing what you learn in Mexico to see if it applies to my backyard farm as well!
