After almost 4 years of watching permaculture videos on TH-cam I finally discovered your channel - and subscribed straight away 🍀 Much Love from Switzerland 👨🌾💚🌿
Thank you so much for this, Erin! Your timing is impeccable.. I'm realizing I have to move my food forest out toward the center of our yard in order for things to get more light. I wish I had started this all when I was younger, but I'm excited as I learn what our land's needs and gifts are. ❤
It would be amazing if we all got to grow up with food forests. My vision is that soon it will be the norm and every backyard and open space will be full of food and habitat for future generations. One garden at a time 💛 best of luck with your food forest. Glad this video and workbook came out at the right time for you 🙏 Enjoy 😊
That's so wonderful you're helping your friend start on their backyard! What a gift ✨We used cover crops of crimson clover, rye grass, vetch, sunflowers, buckwheat, plantain, calendula, fava beans and sweet peas. Not all of these are ground covers, they filled several layers of our food forest - crimson clover is a ground cover, beans, peas and vetch trellised up our sunflowers. We broadcasted these plants as seeds and used them to kickstart life in our soil, get roots in the ground and protect the soil from the drying effects of the sun. We used locally collected seeds, bags of sunflower seed bird feed and cover crop mixes from our local farm supply store to make it economical (tiny seed packs are too expensive to cover a large area). And we covered with straw to protect it from the sun and birds.
Thank you for the beautiful inspiration! We are hoping to buy our first home this year in Northern California and I can't wait to start our own food forest. 🌳
I was so into being able to plant wildflowers soon that I was out digging up an area (my first) for this. Had to stop ‘cause I got into fire ants. All this darn rain. Shoulda had my garden boots on.
I was attracted by your background music. It's OK to grow some vegetables in your backyard for your own consumption, but it's different to specialize in this.

Hello Steve! I'm glad you enjoyed it!
What ground cover did you used at beginning? I am trying to help a friend to start on their big backyard. What tree to get? Do you have a list?
