Forgot to add in the video if you install a 700r4 you will need to have your factory driveshaft shorten or get a new driveshaft the right length/ depending on your power level compared to when you swap to a 2004r driveshaft modifications aren't required.
What about the cross member
Factory gbody crossmembers don't work with 7004r. Will need a aftermarket one like from gforce crossmember model #Rcg-700.
Would the same linkage for the shifter work from a 350 to the 200-4r?? Is the location on the transmission in the same spot ? Thanks
Yes
Good information do you have a part number for the pan and maybe where you can get one thanks?
The ebay option is from ctpowertrain and there pan is item # pml 9917. Second option is hughes performance which can be bought thru ebay, summit racing, jegs ,anywhere. There item # hp3880. I try to pack as much information to help in all my video. So everyone can get there projects completed without any second guessing.
I'm looking to go from a olds 307 with a 200-4r to a Chevy 350/700-r4 would I need to modify the driveshaft?
Yes
What’s wrong with 307 and 200 4r set up
What did you do about the gear shifter, Is that car a column shift or floor shift. If a column shift then what did you do to adapt it?
On one of the gbodys I've done the overdrive swap I used the stock turbo 350 shifter linkage parts(column shifter parts) and just adjust everything till it would shift into every position. All the gbody floor shift and column shift use the same parts and are interchangeable. The only difference is a factory floor shift one uses a extra lever so the shifter and the column are both connected in sync so you can't shift the car while the column/key is in the lock position.
Driveshaft length. You went from a smaller transmission to a longer one so what driveshaft did you use?
One of my cars i used the stock driveshaft since I went from a turbo 350 to a 2004r. They are the same length transmissions. Now if your using a 700r4 it requires a 1inch shorter driveshaft.
I want to install a 200r4 on a 229 my concern is the flexplate i need or does the original flexplate work.
Original flexplate works.

Welcome
Hi. Which would you say is better for overdrive for a 79 corvette. I currently have a TH350 which is horrible for gas mileage.
2004r would be the one I would recommend due to cost and ease of install over the 700r4 for your application. 2004r has similar gearing like your existing th350 and would also work with your driveshaft. Compared to 7004r would require driveshaft to be modified plus rear end gear change automatically to beable to get the full effects of all 4 gears.
Great !! That is what I wanted to know. Many thanks@@gaspoweredgarage
Your welcome
Are u able to use the stock carburetor ? I'm looking in to putting a 200r4 in a 3.8..v6
Yes you can use your stock carburetor since companys make parts for q-jet carbs to work with a overdrive transmission also.
I'm trying to swap from a 200r4 to a 700r4 in a Delta 88 Oldsmobile. What do I need to do?
To answer your question properly what engine are you using ?
@@gaspoweredgarage 307 Oldsmobile
So I currently have a 84 cutlass broham 307 .200c the 3speed I just bought a 2004r 4 speed do I need a crossmember for the 4r
The 200c crossmember might work if everything lines up in the same spot as the 2004r. But if your planning to run dual exhaust your going to need the aftermarket crossmember. Especially if running longtube headers.
Get that G-force cross member, I had too
Is a 2004r a 4 speed transmission? Will it bolt to my current 350 fly wheel ? Do I need to change my drive shaft or tail shaft or anything ?
2004r is a 4 speed automatic transmission. If your current transmission is a turbo 350 3 speed automatic then yes the flexplate and driveshaft will work in the swap to 2004r. If your using a manual transmission with a flywheel then it won't work in the swap to 2004r.
@@gaspoweredgarage yes it’s a turbo 350. Tired of driving a 3 speed on the highway . Need an extra gear to go lol . Thank you for the reply !
Your welcome. Once you do the overdrive swap. highway driving will be more fun and enjoyable especially if you have a healthy or modified engine.
@@gaspoweredgarage how do I install overdrive? Or is it already apart of the transmission when I install it . Never had to swap a transmission before
Overdrive is part of the transmission. You will just need the lockup kit i explain in the video so your transmission will shift into overdrive when you get to about 55mph.
I have an 88 cutlass supreme that came with a 200r4. It came with an electronically controlled carb (I think). Anyway, I put in a rocket 350 from a 70’s cutlass and tossed the 307. Is there anything special I need to do to get overdrive to work? Or does the TV cable handle all of that?
Are you still using the carb setup from the 307? If not what brand carb did you switch to?
@@gaspoweredgarage using a Holly 670 w/ electronic choke and vacuum secondaries
You need the parts I show in the video for the side of carb to attach the TV cable to carb and you need the lockup wiring kit to control overdrive by a vacuum switch instead of electronically like the factory did.
@@gaspoweredgarage ok, thank you! I will pick up a TCI kit
Your welcome
what is the length of your drive shaft
For the el camino that is using a 7.5 rear end and the 2004r swapped its using a 61.42 inch overall length driveshaft and measured from center of ujoint to center of ujoint its 58 1/2 inch long.
What if your gbody has an auto. Mine has the 200-4R in it now. And want to put a manual Trans in it. What parts are needed. I have 2 different manual transmissions to choose from and most of the hydraulic parts and clutch and flywheels
Whats the two transmission you have to choose from? What engine also because some of the parts depend on the engine style?
@@gaspoweredgarage 1. 3rd Gen camaro T-5 from tpi 5.0. And the other is a black label zf corvette 6 spd manual from a 92 L98 corvette. Sbc in a 86 Olds 442
If your engine is going to stay under 300 horsepower then either transmission works the t5 is going to weaker than the zf trans. If your going to be over 400 horsepower I would sell both trans and find a 93-97 lt1 t56 to use with your sbc. The zf trans is expensive if parts breaks so let a vette guy buy it for his restoration build. T56 is super common and cheaper to rebuild.
@@gaspoweredgarage can I use a clutch pedal assembly from a square body s10 or a 3rd Gen camaro in the g body or do I need to fab 1 up from something else. Thanks for your help
83-88 S10 pedal assembly is just like the gbody pedal assembly. Third gen camaro/firebird might need some cutting or fab to get the right angle for the hydraulic slave cylinder to work when using the clutch pedal.
I have a 2004r on my Gbody column shifter a side of the crossmember and drive shaft what law will I need to install a 700r4..?
To go from a 2004r to 700r4 you will need a crossmember and then have your driveshaft shorten. Everything else will work the same.
@@gaspoweredgarage thanks will my flex plate and torque converter be fine..? And will the clearance be okay…? I am actually doing a 4l60E full overhaul with the non removable bell housing, older model do you think I will be fine to bolt up to my 1986 Monte Carlo ss 305 sbc
Flexplate will work. You will need a torque converter for the 4l60e since 2004r used a different a spline count in there torque converter than 4l60e/late 700r4.
@@gaspoweredgarage thanks I got it all bolted up now only thing I got left is the shift linkage and tips on that..?
If your using the oem style column/floor shifter linkage setup it will work with the 4l60e. the only things you will need to adjust is the linkage that runs down the firewall to transmission part of the linkage setup to get all the gears to shifter properly. If you don't you may only have P, R, N,Overdrive ,D, and not 1, 2
Did u have to change drive shaft
For the gbody in the video it has a stock driveshaft for a turbo 350 transmission and 7.5 rear end. That was used when i converted to a 2004r transmission with no issues.
Hey I have a long tail transmission it's a 400 will it fit in a Buick regal?
It will fit but will require driveshaft shortened or replaced for a proper length one.
Thanks gas powered garage
Your welcome thats what im here for is to help so you can accomplish your car projects and car goals.
How long would the driveshaft have to be
What rear end and transmission are you using?
Hey, you used my pic from the car show as your thumbnail 😅
Didn't know it was your picture. Found it on pinterest. Do I need to change it?
@@gaspoweredgarage no, it’s all good lol. I was like wait a sec lol
How much do you need to cut off the stock driveshaft with a 700r4
It depends on two factors- first one is are you using a short tail or long tail 700r4. Second is what rear end are you using.
@@gaspoweredgarage putting it in a 1985 cutlass supreme
What rear end are you using for your cutlass? Also is the 700r4 a short tail or long tail transmission?
@@gaspoweredgarage I’m using the same rear end I got the transmission from a 1989 heavy s10 blazer I believe it’s a long tail but I know for sure that it needs cutting
If your cutlass has a 3speed transmission (turbo 350/200) and also a 7.5 rear end. The driveshaft needs to be cut 3"off to work with the 700r4. If your cutlass has a 3 speed transmission (turbo 350/200) and a 8.5 hurst/gn rear end then 4" off to work with the 700r4. 700r4s from s10 trucks/s10 blazers are short tail transmission. Full size trucks & suvs used the long tail 700r4s.

Those 200r4 are worth some $$$$ now.
Yep I use to get them for under 100 dollars as cores. Now people want atleast 300-500 dollars for a core.
@@gaspoweredgarage hey does the rear shaft wobble on all these 200r4s?
They do when the rear bushing and rear seal are worn out.
How do you hook up the wiring kit?
The tci lock up wiring kit hooks up just like a oem wiring harness inside the transmission then it comes with some quick disconnect for the wires for the outside plug so you can run power and ground to wherever your mounting the vacuum valve.
@@gaspoweredgarage excellent!! I appreciate your video! Helped me get a lot of what I was missing!! Got a 700r4 in at my trans guy for my 79malibu classic
Glad you like the content and its good to see the content is helping out the gbody community. I have a few other gbody videos on the channel you might be interested in. Also have some malibu related content in the works coming soon so be on the lookout.
@@gaspoweredgarage I got a 79 Malibu classic and for some reason everyone is recommending the frame extension but nothing lines up with the frame extension.
Stock locations work for me turbo 350 out 700r4 going in. (Literally in middle of job)
From my experienc using GForce crossmembers- For a turbo 350 you use the stock location bolt holes and no extension bracket. For overdrive transmission(700r4 and 2004r) you and sometimes turbo 400 trans you need a extension bracket plus crossmember.
Nah. I'll stick with a built 4L60E or heavier. Yes, I'm also doing the LM7 5.3. LS.
I would stay away from a built 4l60e and just go straight to a 4l80e since your using a ls based engine.
f over drive autos they suck i run a 02xx 400r turbo stock good to 800 hp has the heavy duty 8 bolt pump heavy clutches stage one shift kit cheap to covert to a 2000 hp trans plus i get them free if u know what ur doing . i have 3 setups right now with the 450 hp 454 with the 02xx trans just sitting . one is for a 79 z28 rs t top that i got free with 2 other hard top z28's
They don’t suck if you want to drive on the highway.
I just got a 350 sbc and I have a 1986 Cutlass Supreme with the OD Transmission 2004r will it bolt right up and will I have to change the Driveshaft.
Yes your sbc 350 will bolt up to your 2004r and not require a driveshaft change.
@@gaspoweredgarage okay thank you for the quick response 👍👍👍
Your welcome
@@kidjuno87did you ever get that swapped over ? Just curious because I want to find a 4 speed auto transmission but don’t wanna swap a bunch of parts
@@socastee_5.097
Yes I was able to keep all of my original driveshaft but in future I will be upgrading my rear end and getting torque converter 2,800-3,200 stall
