We present a case for why Impressionism is interesting and worth your attention and admiration, beyond the famous names behind it of Claude Monet, Berthe Morisot, Edgar Degas, Pierre-Auguste Renoir, Mary Cassatt, Alfred Sisley, Camille Pissaro, Gustave Caillebotte, Paul Cézanne, et al.

I love that Renoir's retort to criticism that he only painted "pretty" paintings basically boiled down to "So? What's wrong with that?"

Wow that's great! Can you please share the exact quote with us? It's so applicable today to people who look down on those of us who enjoy "aesthetic" pictures because they think "real art" has to make you feel something unpleasant or uncomfortable. I love pretty things :)

In the contemporary art scene they are allergic to words like "beauty" and "pretty". Maybe because their souls aren't able to resonate with that. LOL!
Big pp energy
Looking at an impressionist painting is like looking at a dream.
You brought up something that somehow never occurred to me: that these artists were depicting contemporary life. It all looks old to us here in 2019, but back then it must have seemed startling to see 'new' stuff when paintings were generally about ancient history or biblical stories.
they were also depicting the bourgeoisie lifestyle, which was a new subject matter and theme in France.
Can you imagine those stuffed shirt art critics in New York who raved about bananas taped to the wall as art and it's symbolism having some dude who paints McDonald's workers in an anime/manga style trying to get an exhibition? It's the same kind of horrified "this is NOT art!" response impressionists like Monet, Manet, and Van Gogh probably experienced. The number of times I've heard of art professors looking down their noses at illustrations, comics, and anime/manga and declaring it to be commercial garbage and not art can't be counted.
I think we artists that are still in the way of this style need to once again make it important by WHAT we paint rather than how it is painted. There is some truth in this section than is right on the money of where impressionist art should go in 2020.
@@T1tusCr0w I would argue that there's already a new direction in impressionism, it's just not in oils. In the watercolor community there's something called urban sketching where we go out and capture life as it's happening at that moment. Cars, animals, people, the minutiae of life it's all captured quickly with an emphasis on mood rather than exact detail. It reminds me a lot of the original impressionists.

The whole video was great but this comment in particular resonates - I like to collect postcards of art pieces that I have enjoyed or that I particularly remember from museums, and have discovered that those I have put on my wall are principally impressionist, and this is perhaps why. The whole idea of capturing the ephemeral in a way that highlights beauty in very simple things - living in a space surrounded by art like that is pleasant indeed.

I adore impressionism. There's just something so amazing about how it doesn't try to be "great art" or be fit for a king but instead just wants to be pretty, emotional, or both and capture everyday people doing everyday things in an everyday world. Van Gogh's simple fields that are a riot of movement and color are a particular favorite of mine.

My 11 year old autistic, nonverbal son loves the impressionists! He loves them and wants to paint like them!

I really like the idea that the success of Impressionism has to do with the fact that is was the first art movement with a distinct name which the contemporaries could be either fir or against.
Impressionism is thrilling - the lack of strict lines, the representation of everyday life, and THE COLOURS!

The only bad thing about this episode is that we didn't get to see Sarah Green's face at all, as she provided introduction, commentary, and conclusion.

I like the content, but the rhythm of the presentation is WAY TOO FAST. The images stay on the screen between 2 to 5 seconds, which is way too little time to take in the visual information of the painting, AND read the title and the name of the painter written at the bottom, AND listen to the presenter, who seems to be rushing somewhere. Where is she rushing to? I have no idea, but it seems she wants to be over with this asap because she's got more important things to do elsewhere.
Seriously now, please slow down to a more humane rhythm next time, which would be more conducive to the natural absorption and processing of information. Understanding art is not about digesting large amounts of data at light speed. It's about letting the info sink in, having a little space to think about it, going deeper not faster. Thanks.

I know this might sound brusque, but impressionist paintings I like very much because they look like the world I see without glasses. A reminder that everything that looks clearly delineated and controlled is and can never truly be so. I take comfort in this fact that the ship of Theseus never really existed until Theseus bought it and never really got replaced until we thought it might.
I hope this makes sense to someone plus me instead of someone including me. xD
That's what I thought, especially when Sarah begun talking about the approximation of trees and showing examples. I think it's an exceptional ability to be able to paint the world like that, blurry and out of focus - yet still readable.
This makes perfect sense. I'm a trained painter and a technique is used to slightly cross the eyes to focus on the general composition of what you're going to depict so you don't get lost in details. I.e. you can see the areas of light vs. dark and general colour schemes more easily. If you were glasses, of course you could just take them off for this effect.
I actually mentioned the same thing in my painting thesis a few months ago. Being nearsighted is somewhat like Impressionism's fragmentation of form and color.

Yes, people don´t usually consider fashion as an art when it has all the componments to be reconized as it: inspiration, creativity, expression, techniques, shapes, colors, etc...
Defines the character of a sociaty and how individuals want to be perceived, it´s like wearing a painting!

impressionism is one of my favorite art forms as they beautifully articulate something singular about human memory in relation to the world and nature around them that is unlike most other forms.

My high school art history classes only went as far as Romanticism and Neo-Classicism, the stodgy and conservative movements that Impressionists were rebelling against.

Thank you for reminding me why I love impressionism in my own photography. I don't want to show what it LOOKED like, but what it FELT like. So much of that feeling is just the light and color.

I started watching this channel because I liked the idea of Art. I wanted to feel more learned and like I could get to know what I was supposed to look at, or rather for. I found my favorite artist and now also style. With this video it finally clicked. Impressionism is what I always thought was capital 'A' "Art", and thanks to this video I have found what I was looking for. I can't describe it, but I feel it now 😊
10:33 That Monet, Woman With Parasol, I well remember striking me hard in some Parisian gallery, (My wife took me around so many) in1996. The light, the mood, so evocative of a beautiful moment.
I remember her rushing us past a whole roomful of Van Gogh in London, because we had already seen his locations in rural France and his work in Paris, and now she was so keen to see the Turners!
That first painting, with the question, was really strange to me, because that's my favorite painting!

This weirdly reminds me of the Oscars, in that they're supposed to reward great art in cinema, and yet pick contestants based on arbitrary criteria such as Oscar bait. The same way these paintings were being refused simply because they don't involve Greek characters. I think that says a lot about the culture of Art.
That’s a really good point. I’ve tried to explain the... politics of the Salon and how there were tiers and so much angst over the decisions. The Oscars is such a good and more relatable way to quickly get all of that across. Kudos!

Hopefully, y'all see this relatively late comment. I'm thankful for what you're doing here. I have a great appreciation for art and design (and am a photographer) but I was always wary of painting for the seemingly high-minded attitudes my art teachers packaged it with when I was young. Despite being someone who frequently studies things from a multitude of subjects for fun this caused me to, sadly, avoid studying the classic painters.
Your channel has fully inspired me to dive into what was, to me, a lost category of art. You've given me a new sense of ownership and appreciation over it. Not only do I want to go spend a fortune on art books but it's already inspired me in my photography.
All this to say: Thank you. I'm sure you've had a similar impact on others and that's a deeply valuable thing. Keep doing what you're doing.

It wouldn’t be a stretch if called one of my favorite movements ever! The paintings are just so lively and so unique with their own personal flare. There’s something touching about the bold, loose impressionistic brushstrokes with dashes of light and colour that makes the painting come to life in the most lively manner

i was so happy to see this video in my sub box! I don't know much about art, but I've always loved impressionist paintings because they really capture the vibe, or the atmosphere or the moment, and that's something really hard to capture, even with the best cameras we have today. Great video :)

This video so beautifully captures why impressionism is my favorite painting style to admire.
Impressionist paintings have always been my favorite! My mom loves Mary Cassatt, and I remember going to see an exhibition of her work when I was young (and I wrote a paper about her in high school). If I had to pick a favorite painter, it would be Claude Monet. I have several prints of his work hung up in my apartment, and I think the "pleasantness" of his work is a big part of it. It's so nice and calm to look at and enjoy. A big take away I've gotten from The Art Assignment over the years is that art doesn't have to be pretty, and that art is many different things, but at the end of the day, pretty is often what I'm personally looking for in art, and Impressionism delivers on that front.

That Peder Severin Krøyer painting at 9:38 caught me off guard. The sunlight scattered through leaves looks so beautiful and real but in a way that's a million times more interesting (in my opinion) than any photograph that could be taken in a similar situation. Of course I immediately went and googled the artist and discovered that the same could be said of many of his paintings. Wow, okay, I guess I'd better start planning a trip to Skagen!
Skagen is incredibly beautiful and you can actually visit some of the painters houses and studios which I find it very interesting, I go there often since it's only a 2 hour drive for me, you should really go I think you'd really enjoy it :)) If you have questions about the city or painters just ask :))

The Saint Louis Art Museum has really great impressionist pieces. It is one of my favorite sections at one of my favorite places.
You have shown some exquisite paintings and on impressionists, I adore the work of Sisley and Corot. As a photographer myself, I learn so much from paintings, composition and the use of light for example. Required viewing in my opinion.
When I go to art museums, I'm invariably drawn to the area where Impressionist paintings are displayed. I think it's the use of color that moves me emotionally about them. My reaction is almost visceral. I feel like eating them because they look so delicious. That sounds crazy but that's how I'm moved by Impressionistic paintings.

Great video. I would love to see a 'Case for' about Symbolism, one of the least appreciated of the 'isms' at the end of the 19th century. And one of the last overarching 'ism's as there was a correspondence with music and literature along with the art.

Oh wow this was wonderful, I don't really know a lot about art and especially about art movements (I mostly subscribe for the art cooking videos) but this was so entertaining and engaging. I think especially because I was fortunate enough to visit the Musee d' Orsay recently and saw many of these paintings in person. This has really expanded my viewpoint and understanding of impressionism building on what I learnt in Paris

Wow Sarah. I have just had an epiphany!! The first paintings I was ever drawn to were those of Renoir, and he was a famous impressionist. I must admit that i do love impressionist painting precisely because they are so much "lighter" than all the dark "religious" paintings of the earlier centuries. I love Jan Vermeer's paintings for this exact same reason. Most of his paintings include light from windows or were outdoor scenes of contemporary (to him) dutch life. Leonardo also painted pictures that have a good amount of "light - and have windows that allow the light in as well. I love most of his paintings as well. Thank you Sarah for showing me why I love certain artists and paintings. I never realised it before.
I didn't know Leonardo was a light enthusiast. Which works?
One of my newest artistic endeavours that I have recently begun is Digital Scrapbooking. I never got into the original paper scrapbooking, because all those bits and pieces of paper was such a mess to carry around and glue and cut and you could only use them once. But recently I came across Digital Scrapbooking where you can buy papers and elements (embellishments) from online and re-use them over and over again. This was so much easier to do. I have been doing this art form for the last 8 months and i LOVE it. I cannot design the papers or elements. But I can put them together in a variety of interesting and pleasant ways. Every week when I have my weekly Skype chat with my family, I show them all the new pages i have made for that week.
So Sarah. How about the Case for Scrapbooking or Digital Scrapbooking? It can come under Graphic Art if you need a genre name for it. Thanks.

After laying my eyes on The Floor Scrapers at 5:48, I went to Wikipedia and fell down a Gustave Caillebotte rabbit hole. Fascinating , underappreciated artist, and quite a looker, too.

Love impressionist paintings. John Singer Sargent, Degas and Caillebotte(?) are just a few of my faves.
My personal favorite is Van Gogh. I know he is classified as a Post Impressionist. Not only did he capture the moment in his works, but more importantly he captured the ENERGY of the moment like no other. His paintings vibrate with the energies of life, being alive, and the indestructibility of these energies. Rilke captures my feelings of Van Gogh's works best in the final line of his poem "Buddah in Glory" where he writes "But in you is the presence that will be. when all the stars are dead.” ...

Today saw exposition of 50 Monet in Milan a Palazzo Reale near Duomo. Very beautiful and interesting, colours and Lights. Start recently exposition continuis to 31 january 2022.
There are many sorts of art that I love. Impressionism is probably my favorite.
