Night Is The New Day was the hardest album of theirs for me to get into, despite being somewhat similar to The Great Cold Distance, but once I did, oh boy did I got to town playing this record. Some of their records are definitely growers.
Viva Emptiness....that's the first album I bought of theirs, and I bought it in 2003 when it came out. I went backwards from there to catch up. Evidence is SO good. My favorite album though is still Discouraged Ones.
For your taste, sure bets: Evidence, Omerta, Burn the Remembrance, The Racing Heart, Leathean (great song, your taste I think, but so many reactions to it), I am nothing (oldie but goodie), The Longest Year, Residual, Teargas, Untrodden, Atrium (from latest - you will like that).
I'd recommend checking out what they did with another band called the Ocean. They made two songs together, 'Devonian: Nascent' and 'Jurassic/Cretaceous'.

There were a couple parts of this song where I though "this sounds like My Twin" and then I was disappointed that it wasn't My Twin. That must be the curse of writing a good song like My Twin.

I think I may have said it on another vid, but Last Fair Deal Gone Down is an absolute masterpiece and ranks among my favorite albums of all time right up there with Disintegration by the Cure, Lateralus by some other band you might have heard of and October Rust by some jackoffs from NY.... Also, you're doing yourself a huge disservice if you don't jump into Brave Murder Day, especially at this, the creepiest time of the year. Been listening to that album since it dropped, and almost 30 years later it's still better every time I hear it.
The Follower is my favorite song on this record. The atmosphere is unreal there. But really whole album is very consistent. Drumming is my favorite part of this album tho.
I can get that they may seem formulaic over the last few albums, but not in the overall discography considering they started as a doom/death band - I'd be torn between Dead End Kings and Fall of Hearts as far as the next album recommendation, but some other tracks from the back catalog stand out: Day from Brave Murder Day - first song with all clean vocals? And guitars that sound like melting icicles (that was my first impression at least) For My Demons from Tonight's Decision (first non-death metal album that was the beginning of their current sound) Burn the Remembrance from Viva Emptiness
There are a lot of great songs. Do anything from the Fall of hearts or Last fair deal gone down. I love those two albums and you will too. And from this album July is my favourite
It would be interesting for you to go from this album to Opaline or Drab Moon from their new album… just to hear the extreme evolution from 2006 to 2023.
I admit, the last Katatonia album I really listened to in earnest was Dead End Kings (2016). I listened to Opaline just now, as you suggested (first time hearing it). That song, while good, sounds somewhat similar in style to the songs of this album, The Great Cold Distance (2006). For a fully different Katatonia sound I think that you need to go BACKWARDS from this album (TGCD), not forwards.

If this is the ONLY album you listen to, then yes, they will start to sound generic (your word). Of course, their other albums will change it up quite a bit from this. I know that YOURE not calling them generic, Im speaking about others who might call them that. As far as their sound, it has changed over the decades, but at the end of the day their genre is always going to be melodic doom....at least to me.
You should definitely jump into "Night Is the new day" it's just so different and as you love Jonas' voice you'll find yourself loving it even more
