Yes, definitely - a lot of people don't know this. And it helps to pre-chill the cooler, if you have fridge or freezer space. A lot of people have deep freezers or chest freezers, and I have a walk-in freezer at work that I borrow a little space in before every multi-day trip.
I did this with the expanding foam. It worked well. I used Pam to coat the areas where the foam went in and it was a quick and easy removal of overflow. I would recommend using the minimal expansion foam so the lid is not distorted by the large expansion foam. Works great & we keep it covered from the sun. I’ve even used an extra layer of reflective bubble wrap to set the cooler into and a boxed lid style so it is well insulated. About buying ice... we have the same ice company as in the video where we pay $2 for a 20lbs bag. It goes fast. I was lazy and paid $3 for the same 20 lbs bag at our grocery store. Difference is like Night and Day! The ice from the grocer is a different company and lasts 1 1/2 longer than the cheaper ice. I guess one would weigh out their needs vs cost or make solid blocks at home which will last much longer than any of the loose ice. Put some Vaseline on your hands and avoid hot gloves and mess, too! Good luck and keep cool!
Another good tip is to take a sun screen for a car windshield or get the aluminum foil bubble insulation and cut it to fit snug as a second lid of cooler as you loose so much cold air opening cooler. So you have second layer to trap cold air and you can lift up a corner to get what you need
Nice hack ,I'm goint to try that My ice making hack I just fill a couple of 1 gallon ziplock bags with tap water and put them in the deep freezer. When frozen I just rip the plastic of and go to town with a pick and Hammer. Works good for cheap ice . Makes 14 lbs.
I considered purchasing one of the very expensive large coolers. Then I watched some comparison videos and the requirements to get the most out of if. Having to use a "sacrificial" bag of ice overnight, the need to fill it roughly 1/3 with ice and then the ratio of cans to ice. By the time I would be finished loading all the required ice, I realized that 1) there was little space left to actually haul any booze of food and 2) I couldn't lift a large cooler due to all the ice. Realistically, if you're only going out for a day or two, I've found my cheapo Wal-Mart brand to work just fine.
Another PVC tip for ya is a pre made and baited rig with the sinker to. Into the tube with some water and chum or berley to almost fill the void, but freeze standing upright so the swivel is on top of the ice. The ready made castable rig slowly melts in the water releasing the chum attracting the fish to your bait.
Hotels have ice machines. Just sayin. I did the foam hack. I also sealed the holes with J-B Weld epoxy putty so water would not get all in the lid and gross it all out. After it sets up take some sand paper and smooth it down and re apply again just to be sure. It works like a champ. Cheapo Colman cooler with wheels is the way I went and man I love it. I love Coleman coolers anyway so it was a real win for my needs. Oh and one more thing. To all the comments about pre-cooling your items first. That is huge. Great advice everyone.
2 cool love your presentation & most importantly you suggestions on frozen water... Love my cooler but I need more cold time, gonna try the spray foam... F#"* Yeti & Thier outrageous costs . Love the hacks! Keeping a cooler like that should be kept until it literally falls apart and even if the handle falls off you can store old tools or fishing gear in it the possibilities are endless!
My father retired in 74 (F-4s) with the Blues. I lived off off Fairfield and 98. Wenton blvd. Grad Escambia 78. Watching brings back memories of winter under the bridge just before the base entrance, catching sooo many speckled trout. Did you know they run through there when its the coldest ? Blackback chartreuse mr twister flat tail jig on the shallow bottom, till you don't have room to put them ! LOL PS, I walked in my father's shoes at Shermon Field as a contractor. PEACE
Sprinkle see salt across the ice then use a small towel to cover the ice put stuff you will use right away on top the towel the ice below is insulated when you open it the ice will last 2 to 3 times longer
You have the perfect cooler, cheap, light, tough, holds ice for 24hrs no problem. For Ice I put 4 Rubbermaid ice trays in my chest freezer, dump them in a Walmart bag in the morning when the coffee is brewing and refill them. Repeat before bedtime. Makes 6lbs a day, so in 2 days I have more than I need. The larger cubes last longer but still get everything cold fast.
I used the spray foam many years ago and it worked very well. Use the minimal expanding foam or it can bulge the lid. Drill lots of holes too for better results.
@@UMepher Lifetime makes good products. My kayak (11 foot "Emotion Stealth Angler"), believe it or not, is made by Lifetime. I've had that thing through hell and back, and it's built like a tank. A little heavy, but I can take it in white water, flat water and even heavy near-shore chop, and it performs great. Plus, I only paid $400 for a boat that does everything a $1000 boat can do.
Awesome. I riveted a small cargo net to the outside and put a bottle opener on a string and attached that too. Also got a cooler bag to put the cooler in. Huge improvement!
I'm with you Yak. $300 Yeti coolers seem a bit much. It's like a status symbol or something. I'm sure they are great coolers but I'll never pay that much for a plastic box.
Giddy up brother. Great tips. I’m up north and the spring time is great for finding quality coolers at garage sales for fishing or drinking. Haven’t paid full price in 20 years. Just clean the heck out of them. Tight lines 🎣
Tanner Francisco, still a lot more money, and holds less (because of the thicker sides, bottom, and lid) than the comparably sized (exterior) Coleman or Igloo...
Lifetime performance coolers - 1/3 the cost of Grizzly AND made in the USA! Seriously, people trash them just because they are sold at Walmart, but they are quite good at fair prices.
#1 Thing to make it last longer is keep a damp towel on top of everything in the cooler. Take your ice, beverages, fish, whatever and cover it with that damp towel and stuff the edges around the perimeter. You'll be surprised how big of a difference this makes on smaller coolers.
Outstanding Hacks. Never would have thought of covering it with sand. I fish a lot on Cape Cod, great tip. Since it will stay cold longer, I now can take more beers with me. Your so right about aircraft flying over..."America"...Well said brother
You're missing the best hack to keep your ice frozen for a real long time! Great, especially for keeping fish ice cold! Take several pages of newspaper and pack across the top of the inside of your cooler! It will keep ice from melting for hours, along with coving the outside with something to protect from direct sunlight!
he did 2 things better than that and he said the sun shade thing. dont you even watch the videos ? oh you just throw something in and you get to feel smart right ? didnt work
Good ideas. Couple of tips On the PVC tubes if you use class 200 water pipe (Lowe's carries it) instead of schedule 40 you will get a little colder temps since the wall thickness is less in class 200. And if you use rock salt in the water I've heard it gets a little colder than regular iodized salt. On the can of foam go with the high density foam instead of the regular. It gives you almost one and a half times higher insulation value. I agree keeping it covered is the biggest factor.
I’m going to Pensacola this summer. I’m getting either a lifetime or ozark trail small cooler. If you chill it the day before the ice will last 3-4 days
I actually just did the foam to my boat cooler. Its the cheap blue wall-mart cooler but it has wheels and fits perfectly in my Sea Ray. The lid was just hollow plastic though. I filled it with some high expansion foam. I will say to definitely tape off the lid, as the foam expands out of the holes it will stick to the lid and it's a bitch to clean it off. Also get some peel and stick foam or rubber weather stripping. Put it all around the lid so you make a tight seal when closed. Those two things will almost double the melting time of ice in a cheap cooler.
To much trouble do what I do. Put small portions of ice just a layer then put salt on that layer, not the whole box but enough then put the rest of your ice and I promise you everything will stay nice and cold. If you put to much ice your stuff could freeze. Summer time I have the coldest beer
Well I thought about using a cooler vs a milk crate for storage. Don't know how I'm gonna strap it down securely unless I drill holes through it. Also I can bolt things onto it for multiple purposes such as extra rod holders, also it has a lid unlike a milk crate.
Get some of those cheap things of ice cream with the plastic containers. Reusable giant ice trays. You can remove the blocks of ice and store them in your freezer so you can make more with the same container.
The other thing you can do is buy water bottles cheaper the better and put them in freezer to freeze and then use them as ice they work great and can be used again and again
Yah man I did the foam hack with the 2 liter bottles. But they take up too much space. So pvc hack this year. I've had my rolling igloo for yeeeaarrrsssss. Bad JUJU to throw away a cooler with memories. Bad bad Samantha🤣🤣
get a 2 liter bottle. Cut off the top 1/3. Fill the remaining 2/3 full of water. Do 10 of them. and hour before you ready to go get them out and put in sink turned upside down and they will slide themselves out of the container. REFILL AND REUSE>...take ice pick and chip the blocks into a few big chunks. NEVER MAKE ICE AGAIN.
Freeze bottles of water, big and small.lasts alot longer than bag ice, bust it up for drinks if you want, stays clean with fish in the cooler. You never have to buy ice again
Yak, I found a “yeti” loop hole. Try an “orca” cooler. They’re pretty comparable to a yeti, and in my opinion a touch better and they’re made in America. Check them out sir, you’ll dig them. And mamma won’t get mad about you jamming fish in the yeti
"MADE IN AMERICA" Just means they cost more and are made cheaper than the Chinese brands. Americans are greedy and use the cheapest materials and charge the max price. At least with China I get what I expect!
Freeze 16oz water bottles. As they melt you can drink the water. Also that expanding foam can and most likely will ruin your treasured cooler. Maybe use the white foam as it does not over expand.
if you are buying ice from twice the ice or similar you are buying wet ice... it doesnt last as long as frozen ice... sounds dumb but it is a fact.. use you blocks and pack the soft ice around it. great video buy the way ! and home town Pcola boy here !!
Great video Jack, I thoroughly enjoyed watching and I appreciate the tips. I've got a couple of coolers similar to yours with the same problem. I definitely like the idea of putting that foam sealant in the cooler cavities. You're a genius man. It's starting to feel like summer here in the Central Valley of California too. I need to do some things to our grill, like checking everything out to make sure it's performing as it should be. Thanks for sharing another great video. The best to you and Samantha. Stan
Try folding a towel over the contents inside the cooler. This is especially effective with those coolers that fold the top into a handle. It's much easier than the spray foam sealers.
Dude if im not mistaken the round plug in the inside top of that cooler is made so you can fill it with water and put it in the freezer. lid should pop off.. pull the cap, fill & freeze
I agree. It’s what we did when I was growing up. When all the fish were brought in from the trotline and cleaned, into the fish coolers with the remaining ice blocks we didn’t need because we ate up the iced food.
I used Great Stuff for larger gaps and it didn't cure inside the cavity. I shook the can for a full minute as instructed and the foam expanded fine outside the cooler when I tried it, but after 8 hours the inside of the cooler lid is just a mess of goopy yellow nasty smelling chemicals.
you might want to seal the holes that you drill into the cooler with some type of sealant (RTV) so the foam doesn't get wet by the ice and water and mold on you
I've got 2 tips for the foam filled top that I learned the hard way; #1, drill as many holes as you think you will need and then drill that many more. The foam doesn't expand outwards inside the lid as far as you would think it does. #2, be sure the lid is CLOSED while the foam cures for 3-4 days. The first one I did worked good but not as well as I had hoped for. When it was finally time to replace it I cut the lid open and found that I had only gotten foam in about a third of the air space. The second time I did it I ruined a brand new $30 Walmart cooler because the foam expanded so much while curing with the lid open that it bulged the lid so much it wouldn't close anymore..... My third time doing it has worked out awesome for 2 years now.
Same here. I filled ild tures in a BBQ pit. One tire did great. The next one: the pressure blew the tire off the rim....lol....i was picking dried foam outta my hair for days. Luckily I had safety glasses on!
@@t_c5266 no it doesn't, it has more than doubled the time it will keep ice and if your correct then why does yeti, Rtic, and all the other expensive coolers come foam filled?
@@johnpike9612 to increase durability. It hasn't doubled it. You're suffering from confirmation bias or just had an incredibly shitty, cracked, unsealed cooler.
Really cool ideas Jack! Did you actually get long ice life after you filled it with the foam. Would love to see a ice test before foam and after. I am like you I am rocking the cheap coolers too. Just can't see buying a Yetti!
Yep, I agree. It would be like taking the vacuum air gap out of a thermos There are a few who have actually tested this on YT and proved it is worse. The same goes for putting salt in your water before you freeze it. Much worse then fresh water after about an hour or so. @@t_c5266
Let us know if it actually keeps it frozen longer. Should do a test with yeti and your igloo next to each other on the beach in the sun to see how long ice lasts in each .
Yep, I have no idea why Coleman, Igloo, etc. tend to leave the tops uninsulated. Coleman Extreme 5-day coolers are a great bargain option though - like $30-$40 for a 50-quart. Add spray foam to the lid and maybe a gasket (cheap stick-on rubber window and door stuff), plus a bungee cord wrapped around it to keep it closed tight, and you've got a really effective cooler for $50, if not less.
@@UMepher I have an older (10 years or so) Coleman Extreme that is great. It will keep things nice and icy for a good 3 days, even in extreme heat (5 days? no way). Recently, I picked up another Coleman Extreme. There's no comparison. The quality has gone down big-time. Build quality is no better than a cheapo Igloo, and I'm lucky to make it 24 hours without my beer bobbing in a cooler full of water. You'd think companies like Coleman would up their game to compete with Yeti, Orca, RTIC, etc. But they seem to be going the other direction. What's a guy to do? My suggestion is to troll garage sales looking for older model Coleman's or Igloos.
Dude,if you're just going to the beach, any $20 cooler is good enough for a day trip like that, no "hacks" or effort required. Best thing you can do is pre-chill the whole cooler if you have freezer space, and don't put warm beer/whatever into it.
Man I’m doing that with my cooler! Can’t see spending $300 on a cooler, when Old Faithful has been around for 10+ years! Thanks for the hacks, enjoy your videos!
Hey Yak, I have a igloo cube that I filled up the sides and the top with the expandable foam! The lid got a cracke in it and my wife said throw it away and get a new one!!! I said," I can fix it!" After filling it up I used that seen on TV spray rubber paint and sanded it and Krylon it battleship grey ! It's good as new........." No Better than new!"
$4.50 spray foam, $12 Flexi-whatever, $4 spray paint, $1 sandpaper, 2 hours of work, plus time waiting for foam and paint to dry. I might have gone that route too, but it almost makes more sense to buy a new one, if it isn't a high-performance rotomold cooler.
GOD VIDEO BUT.... You used the wrong foam... for anyone else, get the black one that says LARGE GAPS & CRACKS. It expands more. Another tip is to line the inside with aluminum tape. I'm pretty sure most "cheap" coolers already have foam in the bodies. I'd put a couple of kayak pad eyes on the top with a bungee then a hook on the side to keep it latched tight. My cheap-o cooler keeps ice for up to 5 days. I don't need no stinking YETI
Better off keeping your half gallon frozen water jugs. Block ice lasts longer, and in event of a on water Emergency, those pipes are sealed and tough to chew open.... the jug has a half gallon of cold drinking water in it!
I have always been in that boat. A 300 dollar cooler, really. Thanks for sharing. I used frozen water bottles, but did not think about making my own ice with PVC pipe.
I personally enjoyed all my Igloo products from the canteens to 172 quart All Terain Coolers. When on long TRIPS I would make sure I got a hold of dry ice. Sandly for me to say Don Wicho inherited all my fishing gear. If I may add Igloo coolers are manufactured by some of the top notch employees.
Also, never put room temperature items in your cooler if you can help it. Try to pre chill all your stuff first. It helps big time.
Yes, definitely - a lot of people don't know this. And it helps to pre-chill the cooler, if you have fridge or freezer space. A lot of people have deep freezers or chest freezers, and I have a walk-in freezer at work that I borrow a little space in before every multi-day trip.

Thanks Dan make a lot of sense think I'll try it.
Instead of using salt I used IPA (rubbing alcohol) it will lower the freezing point just a little bit more.

I take weather stripping and add it all along the lid and it makes a good seal and the items last longer.
fill zip lock bags up with water an freeze them
Ice last longer if you buy 2 bags or more and keep some closed and only open 1 or 2 and spread over the closed bags it lasts days
Great video and I dig your loyalty to your tried and true ol’ cooler.
Great patriotism as well!
You could also put a threaded end on the pvc pipe that seals well and cap the other end
insulation expands and it can break a cooler if you over fill
it sure will!
while you had your drill out you should have drilled some holes for the bolts to hold your shoulder strap on there
Might need to leave a little room In those pipes for water to expand when it freezes.
Thinking the same thing myself.
USA ALL THE WAY! Outstanding energy on this video. Love the content
Awesome! Thank you!
Stan
Thanks Stan!
I don't know why you drill holes in the bottom side of the lid
Drill holes in the side or the top where the water and mold won't "git in that"
Try folding a towel over the contents inside the cooler. This is especially effective with those coolers that fold the top into a handle. It's much easier than the spray foam sealers.
Why not both?
Dude if im not mistaken the round plug in the inside top of that cooler is made so you can fill it with water and put it in the freezer. lid should pop off.. pull the cap, fill & freeze
the PVC pipes are great idea , do they don’t bust when frozen ?
They are alot sturdier
Quart size ziploc bags work great by the dirt cheap ones
The one guy who doeant use ryobi remember to insulate the bottom
I use old milk jugs filled with water. The bigger your block of ice the longer it will last too
I agree. It’s what we did when I was growing up. When all the fish were brought in from the trotline and cleaned, into the fish coolers with the remaining ice blocks we didn’t need because we ate up the iced food.
A little rubber weather stripping around the opening goes a long way to help.
Hey, just wondering if you have an update for us? Did the foam work? Did those frozen tubes work? Give us an update please
Love the sounds of freedom!
Wet the towel before putting it over the cooler. Tap the power of evaporative cooling.
you might want to seal the holes that you drill into the cooler with some type of sealant (RTV) so the foam doesn't get wet by the ice and water and mold on you

I've got 2 tips for the foam filled top that I learned the hard way;
#1, drill as many holes as you think you will need and then drill that many more.
Tips for a foam filled top:
dont fill the top with foam, it works way worse unless your cooler is on its last leg with cracks and holes in it already
@@t_c5266 not cracked but definitely cheap and shitty, thats the whole point in doing it
Really cool ideas Jack! Did you actually get long ice life after you filled it with the foam. Would love to see a ice test before foam and after. I am like you I am rocking the cheap coolers too. Just can't see buying a Yetti!
The answer is no. The foam coolers perform worse
@@t_c5266 he means after adding the insulation
@@michaelinraleigh yes. Testing shows the diy foam lid coolers are worse
Yep, I agree. It would be like taking the vacuum air gap out of a thermos There are a few who have actually tested this on YT and proved it is worse. The same goes for putting salt in your water before you freeze it. Much worse then fresh water after about an hour or so.
@@t_c5266
I'm probably going to drill holes and foam the lid of my cheap cooler using A&B boat foam
You can simply insulate the cooler with spray foam insulation, after drilling some holes in the lid's rim and the rim of the cooler. ??????
Ok, I mentioned this before all of the video was played and I had to put my two cents in before it was over. I stand corrected.
Let us know if it actually keeps it frozen longer. Should do a test with yeti and your igloo next to each other on the beach in the sun to see how long ice lasts in each .
i might do that
never thought of filling the top with foam.. that is where my el cheapo loses all its less then 700 dollar ice keeping as well.. thank you man..
That storm was crazy Saturday.. we were crazy enough to kayak fish out of Hopedale, LA
Plasti-Dip paint the red part of the cooler white or a brighter color, this way it won't absorb as much heat, rather it will reflect.
Awesome! Pike Crete. They were going to build an aircraft carrier out of it in WW II.
I always liked to take frozen 2 liter bottles in the boat. Emergency water if needed.
Dude,if you're just going to the beach, any $20 cooler is good enough for a day trip like that, no "hacks" or effort required. Best thing you can do is pre-chill the whole cooler if you have freezer space, and don't put warm beer/whatever into it.
Is the red part of the cooler hollow as well? Can you put foam in there too?
3 to 1 rubbing alcohol in your pipes lowers the freezing temp more and stays colder
It does but it's not food grade. Use some food grade "grain alcohol" everclear or bacardi 151 👍
Now I need to see a comparison video on the foam spray hack, thanks
I did one right after this one. Check it out!
@@YakMotley yeah, I eventually found it, thanks
Man I’m doing that with my cooler! Can’t see spending $300 on a cooler, when Old Faithful has been around for 10+ years! Thanks for the hacks, enjoy your videos!
Thanks ! Glad it helped!
4:00 INCREASE The freezing point will increase!
Natty light in the cooler...Yep u can tell they are from the south. Thats what we drink up here in Bama
Best line, sounds like freedom lol
Do you fill tie tubes all the way up with water or leave a small air gap? How much salt?
GOD VIDEO BUT....
You used the wrong foam... for anyone else, get the black one that says LARGE GAPS & CRACKS. It expands more.
Another tip is to line the inside with aluminum tape.
I'm pretty sure most "cheap" coolers already have foam in the bodies.
I'd put a couple of kayak pad eyes on the top with a bungee then a hook on the side to keep it latched tight.
My cheap-o cooler keeps ice for up to 5 days.
I don't need no stinking YETI
Better off keeping your half gallon frozen water jugs. Block ice lasts longer, and in event of a on water Emergency, those pipes are sealed and tough to chew open.... the jug has a half gallon of cold drinking water in it!
how bout a foil bubble wrap cover, or inside lid ,just saying thanks ol buddy 🐟
I have always been in that boat. A 300 dollar cooler, really. Thanks for sharing. I used frozen water bottles, but did not think about making my own ice with PVC pipe.
Water bottles are cheaper, easier, and toward the end of your trip you can drink them.
UMepher that is the way I go usually.
Nice egg what did you cook?
THanks! BBq machine.
