    Hogger forgot how to walk since he's been in the seat. Look if they want this train to sit for a couple hours because i have to go on a leisurely stroll, thats on them.

      Ok here goes being a former CSX engineer for 14 years you may not like it but your being told to do something by the dispatcher don’t argue with him notify your local chairman see if there is a claim for it you can even contact the trainmaster he is right in that if it’s safe for the conductor it’s safe for us we are no better we are all the same something else is going on that we are missing here you can tell by the dispatchers tone sounds like he could have been trying to use a calendar day to drag ass and he got caught the dispatcher was wrong in that no the conductor cannot do a calendar day unless he is a cut back engineer but if the conductor was back there I think we could have worked something out now having said that if this dispatcher was just being a dick then there is other ways of handling it when I returned to the head end 4 hours later I would be ready to go you have to be safe watch your footing just be good and safe I’ve never heard anything like this at all I’m not taking up for anyone but the engineer seemed like he had a little attitude to start with there had to be a lot more going on I’ve never heard a dispatcher talk to somebody like that

      The dispatcher was wrong in that no the conductor cannot do a calendar day unless he is a cut back engineer. But if the conductor was back there, I think we could have worked something out. That being said, if this dispatcher was just being a dick, then, there are other ways of handling it.
      When I returned to the head end 4 hours later, I would be ready to go. You have to be safe, watch your footing just be good and safe. I’ve never heard anything like this at all. I’m not taking up for anyone, but the engineer seemed like he had a little attitude to start with. There had to be a lot more going on. I’ve never heard a dispatcher talk to somebody like that.

    I’m reading this while I’m driving along the UP in Wyoming. I couldn’t even begin to imagine having to do that in the middle of winter on some of these monster trains they’re running out here now.

    I did that once on a 7000ft coal train to inspect the DPU. Told the disp I will be calling him back in about 2hrs when I get back on the leader.

    Ripped a tendon in my left foot once having to inspect my auto racks that went into ude coming down questa grade at 3am almost back to SLO. Inspecting both sides with zero footing on the conductor side almost slid down the mountain. I will never buy "Reebok" work boots ever again.

      @@25mfd I didn't report it as an on duty injury. Took a few days for it to become unbearable to walk on. The part that really pisses me off was I was wearing stupid Reebok work boots when for the previous 12 years I had always worn Red wing's. But UP decided to do away with annual paper boot forms that we could take to the red wings store. They only covered half the cost anyhow. But around 2017 they started doing online ppe crap where we would order our boots through a vendor that only offered a few brands. Couldn't try them on prior since they were all done online through the employee portal. Along with our safety vests, glasses hearing protection gloves, ect...... Thankfully I had disability plans through the union. Every trainman should sing up for long term plans and supplemental plans. You never know what can happen.

      HA... frickn' cheap ass UP bastards... all that PSR money rollin' in from all the laid off workers and stored locomotives, they're stuffing money in their pockets hand over fist but then dump a decent workboot program in favor of a CHEAP piss ass alternative... not surprised at all...
      i was a UP employee to... hired on in 1993 with the chicago and northwestern... i remember the redwing boot program they had... red wings are GOOD boots, but pricey...
      but it's worth it because you only got one pair of feet so it's worth it to use good stuff...
      and yea it is a good idea to have some form of disability insurance JUST IN CASE... you never know when something might happen

    from someone who ran trains up there that is bullshit. the walk from CP 10 sucks they were on the middle siding it sounds. hate that walk with a main on both sides.

    Everybody on here hating on the guy having to traverse a mile, walking a path with an uneven footing, and a multitude of other hazards. Sounded like he was more or less venting. The walking engineer tried to stop the argument at 0:32, but you can just taste the disgust, pettiness, and hatred the other employee has for this individual, as he continues to pick a fight and egg the guy on. The engineer doing the walk, tells him twice, your just arguing with yourself.

    As a retired Carmen with over 41 years of service with Chessie then CSX I have walked many trains and I don't feel the least bit of sympathy for him 😂😂

      It’s not the walking, it’s the only legal way to do it is to secure the train, engineer cannot leave the head end without the train secure. The whole process would end up taking hours.

    This dispatcher is an idiot. I wish this happened to me, the only legal way to do this is to secure the train then walk the mile back, do the dailies then return. It’s hours of work.

    With all due respect this is ridiculous. I don't know the territory so if there is a truly legitimate reason that it's unsafe then he has an argument. If he is just pulling the "safety card" out hoping to get out of doing his job then I have an issue. Heck, it sounds like a great overtime move to me to go for a hike back, do the inspection (maybe bad order it if he finds a non-complying condition - that'll really wind the managers/dispatchers up), and then walk back to the headend.
    As a note, I was an engineer for just under 43 years working grade territory. I NEVER had an issue walking back to the DP units if necessary. In fact I did not want a conductor back there screwing with them; they were MY engines and I would take care of them myself.

      Have you tried walking 101 cars of mainline track? Sometimes you literally can’t. You can’t walk the gauge and the sides of mainline are often elevated with dense brush that prohibits walking at the bottom. Now if this was in a yard then he’s just being lazy. Not my territory idk what’s there.

    He’s just being lazy. I understand some areas have either bad walking conditions, or almost zero walk way at all. But still you gotta just do it. If you don’t suck it up and do it, then the longer it will take to get home. I’ve walked my train 6 miles before (3 miles both ways) in an area that had no walk way at all. And the tracks were elevated on their own hill. You ha about a foot or so of ballast on the outside of the ties, then it was about a 45 degree or steeper drop than went down about 12 feet. And the stones kept sliding out from under me. That absolutely sucked. But I still did it. I complained a lot, but I did it. And me and my engineer had a good time laughing about it in hindsight when I made it up to the engine. One time I even had to walk 12 miles! It was another 3 mile train, and we went I the emergency twice within the same interlocking lol. Wasn’t even the trains fault. It was PTC which is always acting up. So I knew there was nothing wrong with it, nothing to find and fix hopefully a few cars back, no I had to walk the whole thing for no reason, simply because of a technicality in the rule book. The Train dumped so I walked 3 miles to the real, and 3 miles to the head end. We pull ahead and it dumps again. So I repeat the process. …needless to say we outlawed that day and didn’t make it to our destination lol. …That really should be an exception to the rule though: that if Ptc dumps the train while in an interlocking (AND IT WASN’T ANY FAULT OF OUR OWN! We weren’t about to run a red. We had a good signal. It just freaked out and dumped us) that you don’t have to walk it. That was ridiculous

      yea i've been there having to walk the train when i worked the pool... fortunately the lay of the land was mostly flat farmland so most of the route was "walkable"... not ideal BUT just walkable
      but for your scenario, i would have advised against doing that for 2 reasons... first you could have been injured... second after being injured you run the very real risk of the shitbag company going after you for getting injured (a 12 ft drop to the bottom of the unknown, i'm glad you didn't fall because that had INJURY written all over it) ... i've been down that road as well... never heard of an employer bringing you up on charges if you sustain a work related injury

    first and foremost which kenwood VHF Radio model is that and second off it seems to me that this employee was to lazy to leave the cab and walk 101 cars plus the employee he was arguing with was offering to get somone to come out and drive him back to the car or DPU they are inspecting

      That’s exactly how it’s supposed to go. “Over” is like a period in a sentence. It’s used to convey a portion of a message and then he turns the air “over” to the other person so they can respond. When the conversation it totally done, the last person talking will say “out”

    i've had fun with those radios before getting the passwords off of them using engineering software from Kenwood so no matter what passwords the railroad uses they're easily able to be recovered off these‼️‼️‼️‼️

    As a former conductor, its a known fact train crews spend more time trying to find ways to get out of work the actually just doing the work.
    And god forbid any of the engineers I worked with had to walk farther than as many units there was on the head end 🙄
    There was one exception, old head and was a former road foreman that went back to the seat, he loved to walk the train.

      i don't blame the engr for not wanting to walk back 101 cars... over the years, the carriers as a WHOLE have said loud and clear we the workers are not needed on the hind end anymore... "we don't need you back there"
      they institute crew consist agreements, dump the caboose, use unmanned helpers and then top it off by implementing PSR in concert with the DPUs to move TWO monster trains with only one crew...
      cutting the pool crews, cutting the yard forces, cutting everyone they could possibly cut without all but abandoning the joint...they left a skeleton workforce in place...
      but now, ALL OF A SUDDEN, when the carriers technologically advanced UNMANNED DPU locomotive takes a shit, NOW the carrier saying, "we need you back there"...
      tell csx to ram it... carrier should have a M.I.C. on standby and not expect a engr to walk 101 cars to check on the carriers piece of shit locomotives

      During railroad communications you say “over” if your expecting a reply. If your finished with the conversation you respond with “out”. Often you will here dispatchers say “out” that’s the end of the transmission

      @@raillashupaviation5108 This was months ago but I do recall that there was a train entering the Vancouver Yard on Main 1 so they had them working Main 2 protected on 1 but the engineer wanted to make their station stop on Main 1. Dispatch told them they should have contacted them ahead of time for that option then it resulted them in a back and forth from there and it was ugly and I was here for it all 🤣🤣

      I can generally agree with that, but walking a mile or more along a train isn't like walking on a nice trail or concrete sidewalk. Especially if there is a culvert or bridge without a walkway involved.

      Walk 6 miles in the pitch dark in the rain on a slippery 45 degree slope with other trains passing by inches away you and you're one wrong step from injury with no one around to help and tell me why someone might be hesitant to walk both sides back and forth of a train over a mile long.
