I just came back form self drive safari (i'm tourist) to masai mara and I'd say: if you feel capable -> do it. It's not that hard, and you'll have a lot of fun driving around masai mara in your own car. You just have to rent 4x4 and take a masai guide. People who say its hard, they talk crap. BTW it's easy to drive on public roads in Kenya, drivers are considerate and drive much better than for example in China or Jordan (drivers in my opinion are terrible in these countries). I stayed at Oseki Maasai Mara Camp and it was good enough, they provided full board (your masai takes lunch for you to the car). The ugly truth is also that when you take organised tour you pay more for entering park than with self drive, at least that was the case with me :)))))

Thank you so much. Yes you need to be prepared and be a mechanic in case something happens to your car and you are out in the nowhere.. on the same time you need to know all the rules and the security so that you will not take yourself in danger

Anyone have good contacts or know a reputable company to hire a 4x4 vehicle in Kenya? I've been in contact with several travel agencies and they ONLY have itineraries for themselves: their vehicles, their drivers, their guides. I'd be happy to use such companies for say a 9 or 10 day safari but would then like to explore the other parts of Kenya, meet the peope, see the landscapes etc.. I'm an enthusiastic but competent photographer so this would be my ideal scenario for taking images. Anyone kind enough to share the contact details of trusted companies / guides they know could help me? Appreciuate the assistance, thanks.

In my opinion, self drive is the best way of discovering Africa.. Of course that's personal. A satellite phone can easily help you out when you're stuck anywhere (I missed that advice in this video), Besides that, a lot of people actually love to find animals on their own and not everyone is inexperienced in that way, like ourselves. We are actually looking for a rental 4x4 to explore Kenya, so I came to this video via your instagram account hoping I would find some practical advice about where to rent, about camping etc.. but I think it's too bad you are quite negative about self drive.. 🥺

Thank you for your honest Feedback. For tourists I really can not recommend a self drive safari at all. For expats this is a different story of course

@travelwithsinja but we are tourists too (coming from Europe) and we absolutely love self driving, and we know many other people who love it too. Of course it's not suitable for everyone, but if you like a bit adventure, if you have knowledge of African wildlife AND if you are well prepared anyone can do a selfdrive.. Preparation is key ♡

@@cynthiagoedhart1425 Hi Cynthia! thanks for sharing your experience. I do agree with you, I just did a self-drive safari in Kruger and it went super nice!. Did you feel safe driving from Nairobi to the Masai Mara? Crime wise, would you say is safe?
