I promise you won't have to wait long for the next one, either. Probably 2 more weeks...what I'm doing right now is very labour intensive. Thanks for watching though
Thank you Steve for taking the time to document everything on the D2. Information online is definitely sparse or out of date. Your long term plan to manual swap and supercharger is going to be exciting and you’ll have the ultimate D2!
Thanks David - Unless my schedule totally falls apart, you should start seeing 6 speed stuff happening in episodes in the next couple of months already 😎
Hi Steve, in minute 35 of your video you mention the chain tensioners. I have replaced the plastic chain guides on my S6 C5 4.2 (same basic engine) along with the chain, from FEBI, and it has been running successfully for 20.000kms. I do regret not replacing the entire tensioner because it loses its pressure overnight and my startup is always with chain rattle in the first 1-2 seconds. If you are committing so deep into an engine build, I would recommend replacing them, though they are indeed expensive. Tip: inspect the oil return valve inside it. I do not know exactly how it works or looks, but there is some form of 1-way valve in there.
Yup, there's plenty of poking, prodding and deep thought that happens off camera and I did completely dismantle one of the tensioners to see how they work. There is a small cylindrical valve that's up inside the long stem that lives it's life bathed in oil. I still need to go back and inspect a huge number of parts that came off the car to confirm if they'll get R&R'd or replaced. Appreciate your insights.
Thank you Steve. I was wondering where you usually find your technical documents, like the ones with all the torque settings and other details, when you're starting a rebuild? I'm working on a 1996 Audi ABZ engine, but I'm having trouble finding a comprehensive technical manual for the rebuild. Any advice or pointers would be really appreciated.🙏
About the small scoring on the cylinder walls Sunnen silocone paste an-30 should clean that and refresh the roughness of the cylinder walls. About main bearings I'm really surprised that they made that huge mistake, and they say here in Europe its German precision. First main bearings have the most wear on the top especially if timing belt was tighten too much, in my s8 d2 2000yr because of that I have some scoring on first camshaft bearing driver side just next to that gear who drives the tensioners, there is always some wear even in v6 audi engines over there because of that timing belt load, they should make that bearing wider to spread the load. And that tension created a leverage like in your case so first bottom bearing in my have the most wear and rear top bearing. About the plastic shoes of the tensioners yes you can change them if you have no rattle in the morning. First time I changed them (they looked like yours) but year later rattle was like 2 sec in cold start so I just bought Chinese tensioners, cheapest ones available on the market for like 75$ each and 5 years later no rattle even after 3 weeks of sitting, build quality and material that they are made of are worse but they work like a champ, not worth to spend like 1200$ or more for OEM in my opinion. Another thing in my case is some problems with hydraulic tappets, sometimes I have missfire if they don fill up properly with oil, make sure to check them, maybe even to clean them inside if possible. I will have to do that when I will disassembly my engine in the future. D2 is a great car and made of aluminum so it will not rust, and that's a big deal for me, im gonna keep it as long as I can.
You mention that you want to build a supercharger on this engine. Does the VF500 that is available for the S4 B6 fit? I have contacted VFengineering but they are not supporting in answering that question. Their answer was "...it is meant for the chain driven engine...". My ambition is to do the same to my S6, just as long as the supercharger bolts to the engine. I figured out that the manifold interfaces of these two generation of engines are identical, but the valleys of the engine beneath them are different. To me it looks like the S4 B6 engine has more obstacles then the S6 C5 and S8 D2 engines, but I cannot confirm that yet. Anyways, thanks for the videos, they are very detailed and informative!😀
Hey Kevin - Great minds think alike 🙂 I've also been experimenting with chain driven intake manifolds as a total replacement of the dual-flap manifolds found on these belt cars and in that process I can confirm that you're correct about the intake port pattern and the issues that will come with retrofitting any manifold (be it a later model IM or a SC kit); it's going to need phenolic spacers and some custom work to reroute and handle things like the crank case breather for the PCV. Once the fundamentals of my engine work is done I plan to mock up all the existing systems that surround the block+heads and re-design how much if it works with newer methods that make everything much easier to work on and further modify. And if anyone out there is sitting on a VF kit for an S4 B6/7 car and wants to lend it to me for R&D, I will figure out what's required and document it all here.
I might say, it's been a while. I though for a minute you gave up this project. Looking forward to see more around the car. Maybe less about the engine. I'm working mainly on some suspension/brakes and interior refreshments in my '03 S8 D2. Go team Ming Blue 👍
Im looking forward to seeing this as I have a Audi A8 D2 2.8 I definitely need to know how to remove the suspension and subframes as everything is caked with rust 😂 (also my d2 is a rare 2003 plate)
I know, I'm way overdue. I've got 2 more videos in filming right now but I slipped 2 more S4 ones into the mix that will probably be out first. 1 this weekend. There's been a ton of stuff happening on the S8 though and much more to come this summer. Such is life having a full time job AND trying to make content.
Next Part soon enough - there's just tons of information and work to wrap up. It's tough to work on 3 cars at the same time...and work a full time job.
I'd consider it one day, but in the meantime I need to level up my branding and I think we all know I'm playing with fire using this channel name, if you catch my drift.
Happy to see a D2 get well treated.
Manual 2001 S8 from Sweden here 🤙
The video of the year! I waited a long time for this new video. it was about time! What a music ❤

I’d highly recommend the metal cam chain tensioner tool.
This was wonderful!
I just got my 4.2 bas motor torn down. Thanks for the tip on the Vevor it will make my project much better going forward.

Such a awesome engine. Nice music

Great vid looking forward for another video
Another great video… good job Steve!
What a monster! Im curious its durability/revs compared to the B7
great channel, subbed, love the D2 S8 look forward to future vids, cheers

Thanks for sharing your experience Piter, very helpful

I'll have the very thing you need to take care of that work. The episode after next will be on removal of every remaining part under the car.
@@FigureItAudi that's very helpful it's quite hard to find any informational videos on the D2 chassis

Going to be fun.❤
