    Abandoned & Forgotten Places
    Documenting abandoned mines like never before!
    Let's take abandoned mine exploring to the next level!
    With your support you can help make this the best abandoned mine exploring channel on TH-cam!
    Shot entirely in 4K! ...so, turn up those video settings!
    On this channel we go deep... REALLY DEEP into abandoned mines and tunnels all throughout the western United States. We researched some of the harder to find mines and hiked or 4x4 back into them to explore and reveal their hidden secrets. Many of these remote locations are filled with cool artifacts, antiques and unique geology that will have you guessing as to why the old prospectors worked so hard to find gold, silver, and other minerals.
    A&FP moves just a bit slower as compared to other mine exploring channels. Gly discusses why the miners chose these sites and he points out the geology and minerals that got them excited. Veins of quartz filled with gold and silver made many men lose sleep in the 1800’s and early 1900’s and modern prospecting still does to this very day.
    DANGERS? Oh yes, there’s allot of dangers associated with old mines. Un-exploded dynamite, blasting caps, bad air, bats, spiders, and snakes all find their home in abandoned mine shafts and tunnels. Oh, and let’s not forget rotting timbers, flooded passages and collapsing rock!
    Gly takes abandoned mine exploring seriously with all the proper safety equipment, training, and experience necessary to do this activity as safe as possible but that doesn’t mean we can’t have a bit of fun along the way. “Gly”, your host and his band of crazy characters “Old Bob” (Gly’s Jeep), “Quackers” (Gly’s duck) and “Bobbie” (Gly’s hula girl) are sure to brighten your day with their comments and silly antics. Heck, they may even give you a chuckle or two.
    Just like Saturday morning cartoons before the internet was invented, Abandoned and Forgotten Places uploads each Saturday at 7:00AM PST. (that’s 10:00AM for you eastern folks) so don’t forget to click that subscribe button and bell icon to receive notifications of new episodes!
    Please LIKE, SHARE, SUBSCRIBE and COMMENT! All these things help grow our channel and your financial support helps us find new locations and helps put fuel into “Old Bobs” tank. Old Bob, thanks you!
    Ok, now for the ugly stuff...

    26:14 also 26:47 That gear and wheel standing up is called the "Clock". It indicates how much cable is out, or when pulling in, when the bucket is getting near the top. It allows for faster as well as safer operation. Notice the slim pointer at the 12 oclock position on the wheel. Previous to this feature, they would paint white spots on the cable to watch. The grooves on the drum are called "Laggings".
    26:47 The 2' long horizonal lever pointing to Laura's hand is the "Master Jaw Clutch". Thanks guys for a great video! (Dean in AZ)

    Was able to find the eBay store. Fan of the channel and have been since first episode. I like the respect shown to the sites, the history given and I don't care what anyone thinks the drone work makes the person watching get a good idea of the environment surrounding the mine. You don't try to present fake lures it's just a hobby you enjoy and you bring others into it. I have to say this show has me fascinated with the history of mining and the men that worked them. Great work keep up the good work.

    Awesome Gly and Laura! Eyeballing the spool at 2 1/2 feet we have 40 × 2.5 ft × pi = 314 ft, 628 ft or even 942 ft. I'm guessing they'd over engineer it. The shaft could potentially go down 2 to 4 hundred feet, whereas the the ultimate depth could have accommodated a 600 to a thousand foot drop. Pretty incredible !!
    Even at 2 ft diameter, you'd have a reach of 250 to 500 or 750 ft. Love it!

    I've often marveled at how these miners were able to get such large and heavy machinery into the mines over the years. Really incredible the engineering and final delivery to these mining camps that are literally high up in the mountains and how they were able to haul that stuff up to these places on a wagon is crazy...

    When we visited the mine in 2007, there was a laddered manway immediately to the left of the chute where you turned around. The metal bar or pipe that you can see at 29:43 led right up a long laddered manway. I presume this was no longer visible during your visit. After climbing to the top you were on a level somewhere between the lower adit and the next higher adit in elevation. However, the level was stoped pretty heavily and was too sketchy to navigate so we went back down the ladder, exiting from the lower adit where you both came in. Excellent documentation! Was very nostalgic to watch!

    Man Gly I grew up in the Mojave desert in California. I explored hundreds of mine with my grandpa and grandma, when I was a kid and still do it today. I’m 32 now. It was so easy to find mines out there on google earth. I recently moved to northern Idaho and it is so hard to find mines now. There’s to much tree cover haha. Thanks for the awesome videos.

    Hello Gly and Laura, Might I suggest that you could have counted the laggings on the drum and measured the diameter. We could then compute the length of cable which would give a good estimation of the maximum depth the shaft could have been.

  • @nmandmc1
    @nmandmc1 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    Based upon approximately 25 greased groves on that hoist drum and an approximate diameter of 3ft. ( trying to guess based upon Laura for reference) would give somewhere in the neighborhood of 225 to 250 ft of cable that was greased (used) if my math is correct…
    Awesome explore again, love having Laura along for these explores :)

    Hi Gly, hi Laura, Thanks for yet another mine explore video!
    Re: depth of shaft..
    Looks like about 19 to 20 wraps were actively used (grease)
    3.5' to 4' drum diam.. 4'x3.14x20=251..
    Looks like there may have been about 250' of active cable being used.
    BTW.. It looks like someone has started to disassemble the DC motor (offside end bell unbolted)
    They are probably after the armature Cu and plan to come back.
    The empty can of WD 40 or PB Blaster indicates they've probably already soaked the armature shaft & pinion gear in prep of pulling the armature shaft out of the gear and winch side end bell.
    Note that the GE Drum Controller has already been stripped of its large Cu (may even have been Ag) contacts.
    If you know who owns the mine, you might want to let them know.
    Best regards, Dennis

    As a retired Service Technician, I will offer that the winch is powered by 3phase (three powered wires) if you reverse any two legs of power it will reverse the load/motor. The control for the winch is a large barrel switch, it reverses the two legs of power/winch motor safely, they are still in use today.
    A couple of suggestions to you Gly; have you considered posting in the video's, a crude layout map of the subject mine for us to screen shoot and reference while we watch the video ?
    Second, you mentioned the explores in the UK, to which I also sub too if my assumptions are correct. Have you considered an underwater drone? I am not familiar with any explores in the States that do so to explore the flooded areas no one can get too.
    Take care guys and stay safe, the two of you are making for a great explore team, thanks for the entertainment. ⛏⚒⛏ Greetings from southwestern Oregon and the N.Cali mother lode country.

      @AbandonedandForgottenPlaces  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      “Gly”: Yes, I’ve done on screen maps but many of these locations don’t have public access to underground workings maps so I would have to draw my own and that’s another level of production for a guy that’s already stretched thin. Here’s the link to that one: th-cam.com/video/9gOWjQki3uE/w-d-xo.htmlsi=vSTsiL74_M21h-pr
      Underwater drones are quite pricey and require a tether. I’d be concerned that the tether would get snagged or the drone would be lost in stirred up silt.

    Can you dig a trench coming out of mune and let some of the water drain out some. Or possibly a pump to get qater out ? Just seems to make sense.

    maybe it was obvious but at 26:57 there's a much more recent can of penetrant left behind from someone who loosened up the gears to release the drum inorder to lets say "repurpose" the cable. Wasn't too long ago that cable was on the drum being one side is very dark with no dust, the other all dusty. Thanks for sharing.

    I'm jelous of these mines, good environment for wood preservation, and these nice minerals too! Central Europe has some very interesting historical mines, sadly many were burried on purpose or interior is very badly rotten do to high humidity, I've been in crazy mine where supports were rotten and moldy like from kingdom of frost, suprised it held together. But very unique quartz formations here, although people were crazy, since its a small place compared to US, some mines got in bad shape due to some crazy rock hunters illegally blasting rocks out.

    Great explore…and especially the old hoist and it’s electric motor. But a question…where did they get a power feed from for that motor? They would have needed a sizeable generator somewhere - one driven by diesel, gasoline or steam? Unless they were able to tap into a main overhead power line, but as most mines are so remote, I doubt if that was possible. Usually there is evidence of concrete slab foundations where generators and air compressors were mounted; and/or internal combustion engines; or even steam engines. Of course sometimes this equipment is actually INSIDE the mine!!! 🤔 [🚢🇬🇧🚂⛏]

    • @AbandonedandForgottenPlaces
      @AbandonedandForgottenPlaces  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      “Gly”: The motor was probably outside near the portal but we didn’t see any concrete foundations. The old foundation may have been hidden in all that tall grass and foliage you saw before we went in.

    • @AbandonedandForgottenPlaces
      @AbandonedandForgottenPlaces  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      “Gly”: I could’ve incorporated that, but I thought it was easier for people to just go and click on the link. The big stope I found up,on the hill with the planks I crossed was once all backfilled. Now those support stulls and lagging have failed and the whole thing came crashing down into that drift we found. At one time it was probably all nicely timbered with ore chutes spaced out every 25 to 50 feet or so running the length of the stope.

    Gly if you count the ring on the house. The number is 24 per. What i see drum circulation is 6 feet per ring. 164 feet of cable drop. I dont include the static cable. Assuming that orr car at mine floor to head frame back to drum. Would make 75 fet of cable. Soo ther probably three level in this mine.
