Hand Broadcasting a Corn Food Plot

  • In this video I am showing you the results of a hand broadcasted corn food plot. This plot was planted pretty late, Around late June and was only a few inches tall around the 4th of July.
    When broadcasting corn is very easy to go too thick like I did in one of the spots you’ll see in this video. But this corn is doing really well considering it was planted so late.

    Do you hold deer on that property? or is it more of a pass through and slow them down? You do a great job with showing the real side of management and its appreciated. If you want to try something with the thick corn, make a path barely wide enough through out it. I work in corn research and deer walk our paths which are 12 inch gaps all the time; might increase their ability to reach the thick inside.

      There’s usually a resident doe with her fawns that beds on the property pretty regularly. I’ve gotten pics of daylight bucks in late October and November in the area for a day or so. I usually only hunt there 1-2 times a year. You’d have to be pretty lucky to be there the same day a big buck is on the property.
      I knocked down some trails through the thick corn plot I had in the backyard last winter. Yes the extra openings and trails definitely encourages them to move around in the field more.

    You could over seed rye or winter wheat right in the soybeans as well. When they dry up then you'll have greens right in with them. 👌🏻

      I know, I usually seed some winter rye into some of my beans on another property. This year I seeded rye in areas I plan to no-till corn into the rye next year.

    Really enjoy the passion you put into growing food for wildlife. To me it’s not just about shooting something , looks like it is same for you.
    Every year I see people with fancy new utvs and new trucks but they want spend any money on the wildlife.

      👍 yes, I just really enjoy planting and growing stuff. Whether it be food plots, trees, cutting and creating bedding thickets anything where you alter the landscape to better the wildlife is just satisfying to see your hard work turn into results.
      I am to the point where I definitely enjoy the habitat management as much as the Hunting and I know I definitely enjoy the shed hunting more than hunting. 50+ antlers a year is better than 2 LOL.

    Great video, How did you plant all those pumpkin seeds? Broadcast?

    • @wisconsinwhitetail9744
      @wisconsinwhitetail9744  10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      No, the pumpkins were planted in hills of 3-5 seeds. Not actual hills where the dirt is mounded up, just 3-5 seeds in a spot. We plant them on a grid system so we can disc down the rows both ways to get great weed control before they start to crawl.

    Do you have many deer feed on left in the field pumpkins?

    • @wisconsinwhitetail9744
      @wisconsinwhitetail9744  ปีที่แล้ว

      Not many. They will chew on a few in September-October. Not much. Just a few bite marks. But once they start to rot they won’t touch them. If you save some until winter in the garage and throw them out in January they will usually eat them pretty hard and eat almost the whole thing.

    Did Dwarf RR Field Corn for the first time this year broadcast spreading. Have done Sunflowers for years on my channel with success but never corn. Thanks for the video, makes me excited that it can work!

    • @wisconsinwhitetail9744
      @wisconsinwhitetail9744  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It can definitely work. Just make sure not to go too thick like beans. If it does come in too thick I’m sure you could drive it over to make rows with the tires kinda.
      I’ll have a better video this year showing broadcasting it by hand and discing it in.

    Didnyou drag after u spread the corn?

    • @wisconsinwhitetail9744
      @wisconsinwhitetail9744  ปีที่แล้ว

      No. All I did was disc, spread seed by hand. And then disced the seed in, corn can be covered up deep. Dragging the seed in would work too. But there will be some on the top or too shallow and won’t get as good of germination rates.
      I will hopefully be coming out with a better video this year of a broadcasting corn showing my whole planting process. Not just the results.

    Ok inquisitive minds want to know--Is your black and blue thumb nail still growing out from last years mash or did you just squish it again? Hope not!! I tried your throw and grow corn patch with leftover deer corn. Stuff did fairly well and made me a nice screen. Thanks for the tip!!

  • @zebmartin995

    I mostly broadcast corn as a screen to make deer feel comfortable, and to divide up my plot. Any tips on calculating how much seed to put down?

    • @wisconsinwhitetail9744
      @wisconsinwhitetail9744  ปีที่แล้ว

      Not sure on how much seed. I just kind of eyeballed it. I plan on doing another broadcasting corn video next year thinner is probably better than thicker cause when planted very thick the corn can root lodge and it will be a total loss, thinner you may get poor pollination but at least it won’t rot lodge, I guess If it is too thick you could always drive through with a four wheeler and smash some of it down when it is knee-high or so easy to kill at that height.

    What varieties of pumpkin do you grow. I grow Ares, Kratos, and Gladiator. How much do you charge per pumpkin?

    • @wisconsinwhitetail9744
      @wisconsinwhitetail9744  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      We grow Kratos and Gladiator same as you from Harris Seeds. The Kratos seems to make a little nicer pumpkins. Have you experienced a lot of rotting pumpkins when planted on the same ground for more than 2 yrs in a row?
      We charge 1-$5. We have separate piles for each. $1, $2, $3, $4, and $5. We mainly have alot of basketball sized pumpkins and bigger. Not many small ones. A lot of 3-$5 pumpkins. What type of variety does the Ares grow?

    • @craiglamb8056
      @craiglamb8056 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Ares makes a tall shaped pumpkin rather than the globe shape of Gladiator and Kratos. It has a very strong and long stem/handle and weighs typically between 22-30lbs. I believe the rotting pumpkins is caused by Phytopthora fungus. Field rotation is the best prevention.

      @@wisconsinwhitetail9744 I actually get my breeding stock from McFarlane in Wisconsin. I really like the Manchurian Cross pheasants, they are very flighty I've had really good luck with them. McFarlane actually imported wild genetics from China in 1990 or so then crossed them with their traditional game farm pheasants it made a great bird for releasing.
