The Salsa Fargo not a gravel bike a ATB exploration machine. A very versatile drop-bar mountain

  • This is the titanium Salsa Fargo- versatile drop bar mountain bike can take 3” tyres in both 29 AND 27.5. You could also set this up with 700c tyres.
    It has the alternator drop outs so you can run it single speed. You can run a Rohloff and the split in the frame means you can also run a Gates belt.
    If you wanted to set it up as a fast gravel bike, you could but you would be limiting the potential of the frame and fork as this bike is capable of much more.

    Awesome build. Think the gravel bike term is such a massive grey area. The Fargo was one of if not the first big tyre 'any road' adventure drop bar bikes.

      Yes there are so many terms nowadays which is a problem for people new to cycling and they are wondering what type of bike to get. In some cases a sales person is going to try and sell something that might not be 100% what they need because of the brand availability. Gravel bike, bikepacking bike, dropbar mountain bike, atb bike. For me personally a gravel bike is more road oriented but with space for bigger tyres. Their angles would be more for a road bike but designed to carry lighter loads. The type you would enter a gravel race on. Or some other group short events. Then you have a style of bike that is designed to carry heavier loads and have fatter tyres where speed is not important. More upright, slacker angles, I would put them in the ATB, bike packing, MTB group. It is all down to everyone’s personal view point. My brother who shaves his legs would probably still do a five year expedition on a carbon race bike with a backpack 😂 cheers for liking the build btw 👍🏽

    Nice set up - I’ve just purchased very similar bike but with Rudy fork to assist my broken wrists !

      That is a good option for comfort. I might do a similar thing for some really bumpy rides. 👍🏽

    I have a 2018 Fargo with 27.5x3 tires. I ride it on single track mountain bike trails. It works surprisingly well in technical terrain.
    I always just tell people that it is a rigid mountain bike with drop bars.

    • @RidingBicycles
      @RidingBicycles  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think that is the best description. I am going to put some flatbars on mine as I have a torn rotator cuff and flat seems to give it less pain. So essentially when I make that change it will be a rigid mtb ✌🏽

    • @devoidbmx1
      @devoidbmx1 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@RidingBicycles In that case it will be a rigid mountain bike with geometry that raises up the top tube for a higher handlebar position than a normal MTB.

    Thanks for doing a video about your Fargo. Interesting frame. If I had done a bit more research I think maybe I would have got this over my Surly Troll frame, but this was over 10 years ago and maybe the Fargo wasn't in existence then? Don't know. Salsa say it is designed to be used as a drop bar bike and not flat bar which makes operating a Rohloff hub a little more tricky. Can be done but tricky. On a Troll you can have flat bars or swept back bars making use of the Rohloff twist shifter easy. For drop bars you'd probably need modified SRAM Apex levers (de-ratcheted) and the Gebler Rohbox for the Rohloff gear change to work. More £££££. But still interesting.

      You can still use a flat bar. You would just need a longer stem. But there are are lots of cheaper options for the Rohloff twist shifter on drop bars.
      - Check this out it is an insert for drop bars for the twist shifter to go on the end where a friction shifter would be.
      www.sjscycles.co.uk/gear-spares/hubbub-drop-bar-adaptor-mount-for-rohloff-63-mm/
      - You can get a stub that goes on you stem spaces. Not the best as you need to remove your hand from the bars
      - Surly do a drop bar with twist shifter sizing so you can use all your existing flatbar gear.
      surlybikes.com/parts/corner_bar
      Van Nicholas also do a bar that separates.
      And more expensive ways
      - co motion do a twist shifter for drop bars.
      www.sjscycles.co.uk/gear-shifters/comotion-rohloff-shifter-for-speedhub-50014/
      - tout terrain also do the drop bar shifters for Rohloff.
      - pilot also do there own shifter
      There are lots of ways nowadays

      My partner has decided she wants a more mtb focused pinion bike, maybe made out of Ti so if you are in the UK and are interested give us a message. It has been converted to flatbar so has the twist shifter. It is in new condition as she has a few bikes it has done about 50 miles.

    Hm, isn‘t the frame to small if you need such a looooong seatpost? How long is it? Thx

    • @RidingBicycles
      @RidingBicycles  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The Seatpost is the Salsa Guide Seatpost 400mm. I defo would not want a bigger frame I have to have a short stem for a comfortable reach. Both a Salsa Specialist shop and the Salsa site recommend small for my height 171cm and I am glad I listened to them as I normally fit a medium. They did say if I was running a flatbar a medium might be the better option as I am border line. But for a drop bar small is perfect for me.

      Hi, I am 171cm tall (5ft 7”) I went with Salsas size guide and got a small. The bike feels great, but I think I should have gone for a medium because the very long seat post is on its limit and then some.

      Hello. I am 171 cm tall. The bike is size small. I would recommend small if you are using a drop bar and medium if using a flat bar. Cheers
