Can you please cover as well what flap he uses as they exit. It looks like approach flap. And what speed too. I'm so looking forward to the part 2
A lot of king airs on jump run will go full flaps and some put the wheels down as well. I was jumping out of a B200 yesterday and our average gps ground speed was 120 or so

Awesome video dude. I "got talked into" jumping once ... not my favorite moment in an airplane. I woke up in the middle of the night for weeks afterward feeling like I was falling out of my office. I'm glad you made this video because I don't remember ANYTHING about the "nerdy airplane stuff" from my flight. You captured this well, as usual ... thx!
As a controller I notice the weight change at the drop. Sometimes an aircraft will balloon up to 800 feet when they unload their "meat bombs" so we try to sanitise the airspace 1000 feet above the drop level as well as below it.

Controller from Chattanooga(CHA) here. We have a jump plane at APT. I try to do the same thing. Protect within 5 miles of the airport.

As some skydivers have said here, you have two chutes, main and reserve. Those combined are more reliable than the thing you just jumped out of.
But I like having a floor under me.
I hear ya. I got kicked out the back door of a Lockheed L100 @ 30,000' in 1979. Haven't done it since.
Ha! Are you kidding, he intentionally flunked his swimming test so he wouldn't have to go in the water for the Coast Guard thing Flight Chops mentioned at the beginning of the video! He prefers to stay seated, dry, and comfortable. :) :p

Yeah, I've done this once as well. Definitely a bucket list item checked off, and that's it! I have my PPL, and the jump instructor is trying to show me all the local scenery, and I'm telling him that I normally see all these beautiful views from the relative comfort of an aluminum box... straight and level!
I had a private pilots license for almost 20 years before I tried skydiving. Then got hooked on that and got a skydiving "A" license. Both are fun in different ways but glad I pursued both.
Skydiving taught me that I love flying and needed to become a pilot, currently finishing up my instrument with commercial around the corner.

I'm a pilot and skydiver with 1500 jumps and just wanted to let you know that you have two parachutes, Main and Reserve, that are more reliable than the thing you just stepped out of, Just saying :)

I had one reserve ride on my first rig. It was a early 80’s design, never liked the way it packed or deployed. Had that rig for first 100 jumps then moved to newer designed gear, no reserve rides since.
Gear today is state of the art, most accidents people get in now days are under perfectly good open parachutes, doing what is known as Hook Turns. Low altitude, Rapid course reversal on high performance parachutes generates speeds of 70 to 80 miles per hour. When done properly it is quite impressive, but slim margin for error, with no go around option.

More reliable? That seems disingenuous. I don't care how many jumps you've had; personal experience doesn't correlate with an overall trend. If your sample size was 100x what it is, I'd feel better trusting your jumps as a base; however, that isn't the case. 1500 out of 1500 is in no way indicative of parachute failure rates generally speaking.
To the +1; 3000/3000, my point still stands.

DO IT, DO IT, Usually do 2 or 3 a year @ SDC, the 1st one is sensory overload & you don't really remember much until the chute opens, once you get 2 of em in the bag it is just FREAKIN AMAZING , i wish i would have done it 35 years ago, i would have my license/gear and be jumping every chance i could...

I like this show so a few years ago while being in Lodi California I had the opportunity to to jump in the plane as an observer and loved every bit of the flying because I stayed inside with a good pilot very cool dood.
This is crazy I live 18 miles east of Smith Field (Siloam Springs, AR) where they do this. Never stopped. Was always headed somewhere else, and I never had the urge to jump out of a perfect good airplane. This was a fun video to watch. I learn something new everyday. 👍

Am I the only one that is tripping out that a jump plane has a functioning autopilot???? I have over 2300 jumps, and over 400 hrs flying jumpers in a lot of different aircraft (KingAir90s, Twin Otters, Caravans, PAC 750s...) and NEVER seen a functioning autopilot in a jump plane. Dang that would have made my job easier LOL
I know it's two years on this comment. But the main thing I realized about jump and tow planes is, that many are only thought of in terms of delivering the cargo to usable altitude. Dan strikes me as a perfectionist personality, which you must be if you want to fly airplanes as safely as possible. Also leasing an airplane kind of allows you to put all the bells and whistles on it, that you (think you) need, similar to leasing a car.
Simple 2- or 3-axis autopilots/attitude holds are a godsend regarding flying and is definitely something I would look out for for any plane that regularly flies.
Great video. Can’t wait to see the next one with The Jump. I’m a pilot as well and I’ve done a tandem and solo jump. I can remember being at the door looking down at the ground and thinking this is it. I didn’t know whether to faint or throw up. But there’s no rush like it, the free fall and the descent under chute.

I am a skydiver that became a pilot. Skydiving aircraft are so impressive! And if someone thinks the awesome climb of these powerful aircraft is impressive - wait for the descent they can do! ;)
For a pilot a high altitude jump is a great option because they then have the time to experience a bit of what happens in freefall aerodynamicly!
I’ve got about 600 hours in a couple King Air C90A. It always just flew like a more simple, heavy 172 on takeoff and landing.
Cool video. My dad was born in Siloam Springs and he ended up flying a King Air F90 for a while (like a C90 but with a T-tail). The King Air is fast, but not as fast as the Turbo Commander (nicknamed "The Jet Prop") he also flew a bit.

You did CG stuff! this is a cake walk. I've done my AFF1 and am eager to do the rest soon. Skydiving involves a fair amount of redundancy as well, and is shockingly safe.

Kind of kidding. Many if not most jump places are pretty sketchy. This one looks solid though. I hope never to use a chute even If I do fly with one.

Cakewalk especially after you practice form in an indoor skydiving facility, it makes things 100x more confident
I've ridden down in copilot seat in the Cessna Grand Caravan that my dropzone uses. Pulls a few G's on the way down, and pretty crazy short final! Excited to see your footage for next episode.

dude. This is probably my favorite video of yours, although I know I've said this numerous times. Beech 18 and DC-3 shots, skydiving and that bad-ass pilot from Oshkosh last year(I knew he looked familiar), this video had it all. Oh yeah, and that Trista is a darlin'. Nice video. I must have missed it. C90 good machine I have many hours dropping sterile flys out of them. Dan is right about no run ups, except a prop Governor test and Auto feather test would definitely be in the checklist.👍

One of my most fun rides was when I was photographing a formation team jumping out of a king air. Shot the jumpers going out then went back and sat down next to the pilot, he nosed over and we went straight down for about 6000 feet, just like in the movie Point Break. I think the pilot was surprised as he looked over and saw me grinning with a thumbs up. :)
I laughed and stressed through the whole video lol I don't think I would leave a perfectly good airplane... Looking forward to the descent video. He actually passes the parachutists? Good lord...

I used to fly jumpers from a Soloy 206 and it was a blast and I know why you saved the decent for another vid lol.We'd drop that thing like a ton of bricks hovering the redline all the way to the ground lol.

I went for just ONE static line jump. I had so much fun, I did 2 more that day. The following day I was free-falling. Two weeks later, bought my own gear and never turned back.
Looking forward to part 2, but I will never jump out of a plane :), prefer the left seat for all phases (yet I love aerobatics). Great video Steve, as usual.

Great video! I still remember my 1st jump but Dan seems like the confidence inspiring kind of guy I would of liked to have had running the jump operation where I went from back in the early 80s. I'm an old dreamer and love your videos but the only flying Ive ever done with the exception of a few flying lessons was paragliding years ago.
Was looking for the video if your jump and the fast dive to earth Dan makes in the jump plane after he dumps the jumpers but cant seem to find that one! Maybe it hasnt been posted yet? Looking forward to that one and I subbed your channel thanks for the great videos!

Great videos all Mr. Chops!! But: I have a suggestion. When you have made a multipart series such as the skydiving videos (King Air 90), how about placing the links to the related videos in the information text of the video. example: 4 videos in the series: you'd have three links within each of the four videos pointing to the related videos in that series. I sometimes want to re-visit one of your videos but sometimes I cannot find it again. I know, just want you want: more work! But again, Thank you for your time & effort making these videos.
Jumping from a King Air is easier than riding it down for me. I jumped from Mike Mullins 90 my first time and got hooked

Oh man! I went skydiving and its a rush, I'm also working on my PPL right now and they are both a rush.
Another bucket list item for me... and now I'm down to a weight where I can actually do it! (same with the Budd Davisson Pitts training, scheduled this November). I worry about my physical conditioning, too... but if it can be done, I'd like to do it. BTW I smile every time I see you wearing the Yellow Bird hat. I'm still waiting for Dave's call... but I'm in the queue.
Yeah for sure man! The fleet is in bad shape right now unfortunately, so it'll be a bit of a wait - both Chippies are down due to less than simple maintenance issues.., and the Stearman is either still down for the annual, or just about to come back online. So really the Harvard is the only thing flying currently - lucky me as that's my focus right now. But it sucks for the rest of the pilots. Hopefully mid summer the fleet will be more complete.

Steve I wish I would have known you were in town when you filmed this. I have always lived here in NWA and Siloam has always been a big part of my life. I met Dan last summer at TJ pizza right down the road from the airport there in Siloam. If your ever in town again, please let me know. I’d love to show you around NWA and Walmart HQ.
I helped a friend move away from that area. Uncle Maddio's pizza and cookie was one of the best things I've put in my mouth.
