This is so true, a girl in sixth grade would be like I got such a bad grade on my test after she got a grade I would absolutely kill for. One day she did this again and told her she did get a horrible grade. She lost her mind on me and she lost about 7 friends that day. One of the best days of my school life.
I had a similar experience, back in fourth grade. The lunch bell rang but I had some classwork left, so I started quickly jotting it down while the girl sitting next to me was whining about how her drawing looked so bad. I even remember the words, "my drawing is so bad... it's the worst. It's so ugly." A minute later, finishing my work, I said "yeah it is" and ran away with my lunch leaving her stunned. She was like "HUH 😧" It was so funny 😭
That annoyed me, even it's just first time i just tell them "we can delete that and take a picture again, but without you! Don't worry! How thoughtful you are!"
I struggle with self deprecation a lot but it comes from being neglected as a child in the ways that mattered. I was never supported or encouraged and was kind of expected to raise myself in a lot of ways. The only way to get my parents to encourage me and to compliment me WAS to self deprecate. Only by saying my art was bad would i get any sort of recognition from them. It's a hard thing to grow out of.
