From Paris to the countryside: Urban exodus, three years after lockdown • FRANCE 24 English

  • In March 2020, Paris emptied as the first Covid-19 lockdown was announced. City dwellers fled and sought refuge in the countryside. Three years later, what has become of those Parisians who embarked on a new way of life? And how has the arrival of these "neo-rurals" affected the local landscape? Our team went looking for the answers in the Perche regional park in north-western France, an area where many Parisians have settled.

It is good to have alternatives for accommodation, exploring and learning other lifestyles rather than the main cities. It is refreshing for us tourists. Let's hope harmony strikes and the locals are educated to understand how the change is necessary. The charm of the country is essential for us visitors

I grew up in a very similar place to these, but in the U.S.A., near Boston. Having lived through (and suffered from) the changing socio-economic landscape, I moved to a more (genuinely) rural region about 300k distant. What I discovered is that genuinely 'rural' towns are pretty hateful and ugly places to pass your days, no matter what the benefits they might hold for legitimate agricultural pursuits.
My daughter is still farming, but she sells luxury organic produce to wealthy suburbanites outside New York City instead of the commodity products I produced in a more distant place.
She is loved, in the same way a pet might be, while my circumstances are alternately reviled or ignored. Make of all this what you will...
