Mario Party is a party video game series featuring characters from the Mario franchise in which up to four local players or computer-controlled characters (called "CPUs") compete in a board game interspersed with minigames. The games are currently developed by NDcube and published by Nintendo, being previously developed by Hudson Soft. The series is known for its party game elements, including the often unpredictable multiplayer modes that allow play with up to four, and sometimes eight, human players or CPUs.
Mario Party 9 (Japanese: マリオパーティ9, Hepburn: Mario Pāti Nain) is a 2012 party video game developed by NDcube and published by Nintendo for the Wii. The ninth main installment in the Mario Party series, it was announced at E3 2011 and released in Europe, North America, and Australia in March 2012, followed by Japan a month later. It was the first game in the series not to be developed by Hudson Soft, which was acquired and dissolved by Konami on March 1, 2012, the day before the game's European release. Instead, development was taken over by Nintendo studio NDCube (who remains the developer of the series to this day). This was also the final Mario game to be released on the Wii.
Mario Party 9 was the second and last game in the series released for the Wii, and was followed by Mario Party: Island Tour for the Nintendo 3DS in 2013, and Mario Party 10 for the Wii U in 2015. It was also one of the last official first-party Wii games released in North America, followed by Project Zero 2: Wii Edition and Kirby's Dream Collection.
Mario Party 9 includes seven board maps, 82 minigames, and 12 playable characters. The game received mixed to positive reviews from critics, with praise for its gameplay, graphics, multiplayer, minigames, and content, considering it an improvement on its predecessor. However, its overhaul of mechanics received a mixed reception for its linear boards and emphasis on luck.
Mario Party Superstars is a 2021 party video game developed by NDcube and published by Nintendo for the Nintendo Switch. It is the twelfth home console installment in the Mario Party series, and the second for the Nintendo Switch following Super Mario Party (2018). It was released on October 29, 2021.
The game features five remade boards from the original Nintendo 64 trilogy and a total of 100 minigames curated from previous entries in the series, similar to the Nintendo 3DS game Mario Party: The Top 100 (2017). Unlike Super Mario Party, Superstars can be played with button controls. Upon release, Mario Party Superstars received mostly positive reviews from critics who praised the game for its homage to the series' history with its classic minigames and boards, as well as its online functionality.
Super Mario Party Jamboree is an upcoming party video game developed by Nintendo Cube and published by Nintendo for the Nintendo Switch. It will be the thirteenth home console installment in the Mario Party series, the twelfth in the main series, and the third on the Nintendo Switch, following Super Mario Party (2018) and Mario Party Superstars (2021). It is a successor to Super Mario Party and is set to release worldwide on October 17, 2024.
Super Mario Party Jamboree was announced during the June 18, 2024 Nintendo Direct. Described to be "the biggest Mario Party to date", the presentation announced over 110 minigames, seven boards (including Mario's Rainbow Castle and Western Land, which previously appeared in Mario Party and Mario Party 2, respectively), and an online 20-player "Koopathlon" mode. Another online mode called "Bowser Kaboom Squad" has also been announced.
In addition to Mario, Luigi, Yoshi, Peach, Daisy, Rosalina, Wario, Waluigi, Donkey Kong, Birdo, Bowser, Bowser Jr., Goomba, Koopa Troopa, Shy Guy, Boo, Monty Mole, Toad, Toadette, and Spike, Super Mario Party Jamboree introduces Ninji and Pauline as new playable characters.
