This was the last album Steve Hackett played on before he left the band. He couldn't get any of his music and ideas through so decided to leave which is such a shame as the band moved into a pop commercial direction. This track was written by Steve with arrangement help, co written with Phil Collins. You must checkout Steve's album Spectral Mornings. The first track Every Day is so powerful and melodic. Many of the ideas and music for that album and his previous album called Please Don't Touch were offered to Genesis who rejected them. Such a loss to the band. Blood On The Rooftops was one of Steve Hackett's finest moment with Genesis. Great reaction again Brandon.

Steve's opening guitar piece sets the stage for a truly beautiful piece of music. And lyrically it evokes such strong imagery - it's remarkable. So glad that you enjoyed this one! I then started going backwards from there, so I found W&W probably one or two years later (so ~1980?). I have to admit, I moved away from prog as the 80s continued on (moved on to punk/new wave/alternative), but with reaction channels getting big a few years ago I've rediscovered my list of old favorites. One of my absolute favs from these guys from one of their top albums IMO. Tony Banks has stated that this just might be their finest moment overall, which is complementary to Steve and Phil. Steve wrote everything except the chorus which was one of Phils not so common contributions to the catalogue that far in to their career, not counting the jams he did with Tony and Mike which are the highlights in many songs up to this point and beyond. Steve wrote the lyrics for the verses, Phil wrote the chorus lyrics. Which to me is a rare example of Genesis lyrics other than Petes which holds its ground to Petes. Then the rain at Lords stop play. A very English reference meaning that a cricket game was stopped due to typical English weather. The couple narrated in the song probably just sits sipping their tea and watches an empty rainy cricket field instead of the arab and the jews boys. What a mood inducing song and lyric!

Nostalgia is a nice description. All the old TV references maybe. Genesis is unique for consistently delivering the atmosphere and invoking the emotion of the lyrics with their music.

  • @Yesquire0

As a young lad, I avidly purchased lots of DC comics with my meager earnings from lugging golfers' heavy bags for five miles around a lovely golf course, and as an avid reader, I checked out and consumed all the rip-snorting Edgar Rice Burroughs' Tarzan books from the local library. As a teen, my favorite Saturday morning cartoon show was the fabulous "Batman Tarzan Adventure Hour", immortalized in this song by the lyric "By Batman Tarzan still surprised". Either Steve or Phil also loved that TV show enough to use it in a lyric within this beautiful song.
The two albums where Genesis remained true to its progressive roots, with Phil on lead vocala, are my favorites. Not that Peter Gabriel was a bad vocalist. Far from it. He, too, was great. But there is just something about Phil's voice that is very special, not only to me, but by the tens of millions of fans who came to love the pop version of the band, and Phil as a solo artist.
Some music fans seek out the excitement inherent in faster tempos and guitar pyrotechnics. Others seek beauty sublime enough to elicit tears of sheer joy and amazement, which is what we just both enjoyed together. Myself, in my dotage, now look for pure, raw emotion, provided in huge doses by a band which was often dismissed in its early era as too derivative of Genesis, Marillion, now fronted by the incomparable Steve Hogarth, the only voice I love more than that of Phil Collins.

😎I don’t think many Genesis fans would disagree that this is one of their finest songs…alas I’m not aware that they ever recorded a live version, but perhaps it exists on a bootleg somewhere. I hope Brandon that you get around to reacting to the live album Seconds Out that was from this same period and had songs from their whole career played with fabulous energy and Phils first outings as live frontman. Also contains the first double drum playing, both with Bill Bruford who plays on The Cinema Show, and Chester Thompson on the rest of the album…It’s definitely a drummers record with Phil at possibly his drumming peak before 80s superstardom kind of took him away from the kit much more. He was obviously a great drummer throughout his career but the energy and finesse he played with in the late seventies is magic…

Another very nice video from you, Brandon. Thanks for that. It still is and always will be one of my favorite songs by the band. It's a rather short song but has so much to offer musically. Oh, that wonderful intro on the acoustic guitar...incomparable. Or how naturally they play with the constant alternation between major and minor chords, especially in the small bridge between verses 1 and 2, and 3 and 4. Music in perfection. Lyrically, it's the most solid and political Genesis (in this case Steve Hackett) have written to date. A convincing synonym, the "Blood On The Rooftops" for the then common TV antennas on the houses at that time.
The Genesis fan club wrote: A track like "Blood On The Rooftops" highlights the opportunities the band lost after his (Hackett's) departure.

The word you don't see often associated with Genesis is MATURITY. Those guys were so incredibly humble and dedicated to the pursuit of beauty and were the antithesis to showoffs and stage pets! Thats how you enter legend, the good way!

This song changed my connection with music even more than Sgt Pepper´s or Pink Floyd´s Dark side of the moon. I was a kid and the first passes were simply mesmerizing. I just couldn´t stop listening to it and discovering corners and places. I even had to buy a new record because I spoiled it.

Another beautiful song Brandon. The part that gives me goose-bumps and get the hairs on my arm standing up is at th-cam.com/video/_skH3uQIgkY/w-d-xo.html in the video, when the bass peddles come in after Phil sings, "We always watch the Queen on Christmas Day; won't you stay?" Those strings-like keyboards are beautiful as are the oboe-like synths.
It's such a quintessentially British song with references to everyday things that only a Brit' would understand the significance of.

G having one their most delightfully British moments. This is one song from Wind + Wuthering that makes it so painful NOT to choose W+W as my favourite Genesis album. But I have to stick with Selling England for that Desert Island spot. But this IS a truly incredible creation - lush and measured - with Tony's BIG Romantic chords, Steve's amazing nylon work + Phil's heart-felt delivery. Astounding, even after all these years. [edit] Cool lyric breakdown! I was unaware of the intent of the song, which is strange since I've lived with the bloody thing for almost 50 years. Thanks for the insight into this Masterpiece! ☮

@@retroreactions.... Now that you are about to publish your reaction to Afterglow, I would suggest either listening to or watching one of the medleys that Genesis performed in the first half of the 1980s. Most of them start with In the Cage and then they go onto some parts from the Cinema Show, some instrumentals from The Lamb and/or Wind & Wuthering, and then Afterglow. The 1982 live version from Three Sides Live might be the best thing they ever recorded, and the 1984 version you can find on TH-cam is spectacular, especially for Phil's amazing performance alternating between the singing and the drumming.

A quintessentially English song, if ever there was one. Lyrically, at least. Detailing the mediocre existence of having to stay in due to the rain and watch TV, with a choice of fictional drama or world current affairs to distract yourself with. Commentary in the style of the media vocabulary, with many a familiar reference used. A mish-mash of the mediocre boredom of being stuck indoors on a dreary wet afternoon/evening, with nothing but the TV and radio to entertain. Along with making tea or drinking beer or wine! Many references to what were then current TV shows and current affair events of the day along with some of the phraseology used by news readers and announcers of the time. That people would rather stick to fiction than have to face up to the realities that the evening news reminded them of.
