Geoff: low bass, bass, baritone, tenor, beatboxer. -has the label bass.
Layne: bass, baritone, tenor, beatboxer who can make sounds higher and lower than anyone in the group with various techniques. -has the label beatboxer.
Eli: bass, baritone, tenor, rock tenor. -has the label tenor.
Cesar: baritone, tenor. -has the label baritone.
These guys don't always stick to their label. The beatboxer might sing baritone, or tenor, or bass. The tenor might sing bass. The bass might sing tenor. The bass might beatbox. A singer might play an instrument. You never know what you get with these guys 😂😂

The song is from Disney's The Hunchback of Notre Dame. Geoff does roughly half of VoicePlay videos. This one was done by Layne, the beatboxer. They are both incredible arrangers, singers, editors etc. Whichever has the original concept. sees the whole thing thourgh to the final mix . The song is very dark, and the costumes echo this. Left to right, Layne, J.None, Geoff, Eli (say it as ellie) and Cesar. And they all have an amazing range though not as wide as Geoff's.

The character who originally sung this song in Disney's Hunchback of Notre Dame was voiced by the late Tony Jay, who had a famously deep voice, so it was basically written for a bass vocalist in the lead.

Layne and Geoff were trading off the bass in the beginning until Layne started beatboxing. It is really had to tell who is signing bass if Geoff has the lead, Layne, J and Eli can sing bass and they all have astounding ranges. Layne has the largest recorded range if you include beatboxing techniques. Enjoyed the reaction!!

If you really listen to the lyrics, this is an amazingly dark and evil song, kind of hard to believe it was Disney.
Frollo (the main antagonist) is lusting after Esmeralda the gypsy. He starts off by telling the Virgin Mary (Beata Maria) about how pure and righteous he is. He's blaming his lust on pretty much everything else but himself. He blames Esmeralda accusing her of casting a spell on him, he even blames God for making "the Devil so much stronger than a man." After she escapes, he declares that he will burn all of Paris if necessary to get her back where she will either be his, or he will burn her as a witch, because if he can't have her, nobody will. In the end he's trying to ask for God's mercy, sort of implying he knows he's wrong, but he still commits to his course.

Voiceplay was founded in 1997 by Geoff Castellucci, Layne Stein and 3 others under the name 4:2: Five. Layne was baritone at the time. Their beatboxer left in 2003 for a very successful acting career, Scott Porter. They've been through many changes until 2021.
In 2010 Eli joined and they changed the name in 2012. J None joined in 2018 and left in 2021 to sing with the US Navy. Cesar joined in 2021 to replace J None.
    Left to right....
Layne Stein - beatboxer, baritone, arrangements.
J None - guest, baritone, former member.
    Geoff Castellucci - bass, arrangements.
Eli (like jelly) Jacobson - tenor, rock tenor, lighting.
Cesar De La Rosa - baritone, tenor.
These guys are known as both The Theater Kids of Acapella and The Kings of Halloween because of their love of dressing up and performing.
Geoff Also has his own channel where he sings solo with instruments. He clones himself 3-4 times for harmonies. Most times they're in his videos with him.
What started as a jab at everyone that misspelled or mispronounced his name wrong he name his 3 main clones in his video.... Way Down. Jeff, Jeoph, and Goff. Then in his Halloween video.... Ghost Riders In The Sky he had all 4 clones so he named the 4th one Daryl.
Now his clones are referred to by their names.
His Halloween video this year is.... Jack's Lament from Nightmare Before Christmas.

Ooh, I love that! I wonder... are his clones like stunt doubles, or are they also him? Also, someone else mentioned Jack's Lament... I'll definitely have to check it out! Do you have any other songs you'd like to see me react to? Also, I hope you enjoyed! ❤

They are all him. By cloning I mean layering. Different people have different names for it. I always just say clone.
When it's just him in the video his harmonies in the background are all him.
His past Halloween videos... Headless Horseman, Monster Mash and Ghost Riders In The Sky.
Voiceplay has a bunch of Halloween videos to choose from. All fantastic.
Also. Pattycake Productions (owned by Layne and former member Tony Wakim) has a ton of original Disney related videos that they wrote, produced, arranged, etc themselves.
Bump In The Night and Villains Haunted Mansion are two of their Halloween videos that I love.

This is from Disney's The Hunchback Of Notre Dame. Layne the beatboxer and Geoff both do arrangements. Eli (Ellie) rhymes with jelly usually sets up the lighting and on rare occasions arranges. This Arrangement and Video - Layne Stein. If you check the credits you will find they do most everything themselves. Arranging, sets, costumes, filming, editing, lighting. They are totally independent. Geoff Castellucci the bass just released his cover of JACKS' LAMENT from The Nightmare Before Christmas. It shows off his range.

Really enjoyed your reaction. I didn't know the song either, but I did know that it was from Hunchback of Notre Dame from their Patreon channel. They are almost entirely supported by Patreon, they have no label, no manager, completely independent. And they do everything themselves. For elaborate makeup or extra camera work they will work with crews that they've worked with for years.
Eli, the bald tenor, sang second tenor until 2020 when their first tenor left for personal reasons. He is a rocking beast, I think that highest note was an F5. Cesar, the "baritone" beside him sang the highest note when they covered Dream On. They all have amazing ranges.
Check out Valhalla Calling, Geoff's lowest note is a B0.

Layne (typically does beatboxing) and Geoff (usually does base) take turns doing the arrangements. Sometimes other mambers will do an arrangement, but it is usually Layne or Geoff.
Geoff has his own channel as well, where all voices in the pieces are him, tracked over each other.

Layne the beatboxer took control of this project. Geoff and Layne alternate nearly always the project/month. Eli (Rock God) is responsible for the lighting. Cesar did some air guitar just before the guard showed up (Tony Wakim - co-owner of Pattycake Productions with Layne). Once upon a time when the group started Layne was the baritone. He is beatboxer, baritone, classic violinist, nicknames Carrot Lord and VioLayne. J None was a member before the US Navy grabbed him for his vocal talents. He's been coming back when he could. He does try to keep Layne from teasing him with carrots. Both he and Layne play the violin. Can be seen in Warriors (Imagine Dragon). Also with Halloween try In the Hall of the Mountain King, trolls and cauldrons.

@@FluffyPlaysGamez They recruited him for a 5 yr stint, he's in the Navy Chorus, came in as a baritone, has been promoted to bass and still can do tenor as well. He had been stationed in Seattle but with the promotion, he was moved to Washington DC. I would imagine that the US Navy also offered music theory, schooling, etc. He is over half way through the 5 yrs. Because VoicePlay lost one original member (Earl - high tenor 1, left for personal reasons after 25 yrs) and J None for the opportunity in the Navy, they were short 2 people. The auditioned several and opted for Cesar (see his final audition in We're Good with the group). He is a baritone/tenor so he fills 2 slots and they can get a guest vocalist for either baritone or tenor. That offers them a lot of variety. I have no way of knowing but with J None coming back as often as he can, and VoicePlay not filling the 5th slot, makes me think they are keeping in open for him. If you haven't done it yet, check Friends on the Other Side (Disney), Nothing Else Matters (Metallica), Valhalla Calling (Miracle of Sound), In the Air Tonight (Phil Collins) for ones he done while in the Navy. Tennessee Whiskey was before Earl and J None left as is Warriors - both outstanding and very different from each other.

Eli, rhymes with belly, our high tenor. On the far right, Ceasar, the Angel Voiced. Eli and Layne can, and do dip down to bass when needed, like Geoff is otherwise occupied. That extra caped figure was Tony Wakim. He was a founding member, and now him and Layne have a busy interest in Patty cake Studios. Eli, who does voicework, did the lines. The boys have lots of friends who play these walk in parts. I will add, Tony has a Tenor voice that left women weak at the knees! To see him with the group, check out The Phantom of the Opera.

VoicePlay is known for giving everyone a chance to sing lead in almost every video. And there are several where Geoff has the main lead.
Left to right - Layne (Lane) percussion, used to be a VP singer early on, baritone & 2nd tenor. JNone - former baritone with VP, has good range, now sings with the Navy. Geoff - obviously. Eli (rhymes with Jelly), tenor (obviously) but can cover down to bass, used to sing lead in rock bands. Cesar - baritone but has a great range up to high tenor, newest member of VP.

So many people have mentioned Layne did the arrangement on this one. I've found as a good quick guess, the more centered in an arrangement Geoff is and the more his voice is shown off, the more likely it is to be Layne arrangement. Layne loves to push Geoff to exceed his self expectations. Or as Geoff puts it, "Layne doesn't care what's comfortable or, y'know, possible." But then he does it anyway so Layne is kind of right.

Since people might want to know, I took the liberty of figuring out the Latin parts of the song (although I am no Latin speaker, so do take my translations with a grain of salt):
    Beata Maria - Blessed Mary
Et tibit pater - And the father trembles
    Cogitatione - thinking
Mea maxima culpa - my fault
Kyrie eleison - Lord have mercy (I knew this one :)
So, the singers within Voiceplay in order of how they were standing (save J None) is Layne Stein (Fluffy was right), Geoff Castellucci, Eli Jacobson, and Cesar De La Rosa.
“Hellfire” is from The Hunchback of Notre Dame, no worries, I did not know it either (having never seen The Hunchback of Notre Dame). I would guess it is being sung about Esmerelda by the antagonist (it is, I checked).
Also, it is known as one of the best villain songs by Disney.
The random pause O.o perhaps you could edit it out? Reaction videos usually are more linear, with lesser pauses.

We gotta get your mic to pick up your low notes as well, instead of just the beginning of the note. Either way, it really was a good showcase of bass notes (by you and Voiceplay).

How many pauses in a reaction video depends on the reactor. Some will say up front that they pause a lot and if the viewer doesn't like that sort of thing, then this vid is not for them. Personally, I enjoyed your reaction. I would rather have you pause then talk over the video - as long as you rewind a bit, because some pauses may cut off a good part. Vocal coaches will pause a lot while analyzing the singing. I liked that you reacted to both the music and the lyrics. You did a good job - no complaints here.
Also, good that your video is in the bottom left corner, which doesn't cut off anybody's head.

Part of these background vocals are taken from a prayer called the Confiteor that has been part of the Catholic Mass for something like a thousand years. (More of the prayer is used in the original film version of the song.) It goes in part: "I confess to almighty God, and to you, my brothers and sisters, that I have sinned through my own fault, in my thoughts and in my words, in what I have done and in what I have failed to do."
Frollo, who claimed to be a very devout man, would have been _intimately_ familiar with this prayer and with the Church's teaching that everyone sins and no one is in a position to claim that they're more 'righteous,' 'pure' or 'virtuous' than anyone else, or to look down on others for their sins. The background vocals are an accusation.
When Frollo sings "Why I see her dancing there," he's being haunted by Esmerelda's image as he stares into the flames of a great fireplace. He's a hypocrite and a violent, cruel, prideful man who's probably never prayed sincerely for strength before in his life, and the attempt fails, because his faith is a hollow facade. He's put nothing into it that could sustain him now.

Yes, that's Latin; "Maria" in this context is Mary, daughter of Heli and mother of Jesus, after whom the Roman Catholic cathedral, Notre Dame (literally, "our Lady") de Paris, is named. (Catholics pray to Mary as part of their tradition of praying to deceased saints in general.) The movie in turn is (indirectly) named after the cathedral (and one of the characters). It's a Disney animated movie from late in the hand-drawn era, right before they entered into a relationship with Pixar to do computer-animated stuff. (In fact, I think Toy Story may even have been finished and released to cinema before Hunchback, so we're _right_ at the edge of the transition.) This, song as you could probably guess, is sung mainly by the villain. The other bits of Latin in the lyrics, likewise mirror what is being said in English, e.g., when the main part is saying "God have mercy on me, God have mercy on her", the Latin in the background also translates "Lord [have] mercy" (and is noticeably similar to the corresponding Greek, ἐλέησόν κύριε, from which the Latin was translated by Jerome; the phrase in Latin is famous mainly for being a key part of the Catholic "mass" service).
You don't usually notice it, because he's busy making drum sounds most of the time, but Layne's vocal range is even larger than Geoff's. No fooling. (I think *everybody* in this group has at least a four-octave range...) However, he uses different techniques to get there, e.g., where Geoff typically uses subharmonics for the very lowest notes, Layne's lowest notes are achieved via ingressive phonation. (I think "burn it" here was just breathy chest voice, though, albeit maybe with a bit of vocal fry, not sure.)

VoicePlay and Geoff Castellucci have my fave music channels on TH-cam! I simply can't get enough. They've turned me into a weirdo mom who's trying to hit bass notes and drum fills in the kitchen, LOL. You would probably really enjoy their Halo cover; Geoff has a B0 in it (or several). The Charismatic Voice reacted/analyzed their Halo cover with the composer of the song and he loved it, too! Def recommend watching. You just can't go wrong with anything from VoicePlay and Geoff. Also, Layne has Pattycake Productions and they produce a lot of fun Disney content/songs. I see you've already found the Bass Gang, whose last 3 videos have really been fun. Voctave is another acapella group with 11 members that you might enjoy. Their Disney Heroes and Villains features a lot of their male singers, starting off with their bass Karl. Geoff has said being in the same room with Karl's speaking voice will rattle your chest. XD

To get the full effect I recommend either in ear monitors, or over the ear monitors. Something with a flat response. They also need to respond to at least a C1

If you go into the video description, you would see that Hellfire was arranged by Layne not Geoff.
Actually quite a few of the pieces that really show off Geoff imo are arranged by Layne (proud of his friend ig)😊

I think that Layne chose to have Geoff take the lead on this song because the character is a villain and it having the bass lead makes it more sinister.

      A very reasonable hypothesis 🤔

Latin, yes. The character and the song...arguably the ultimate Disney bad guy. He is clergy, and powerful, and obsesses over a young Gypsy woman, and causes destruction too.
