Very first reaction I've ever seen mention the ring not bouncing when Bilbo drops it. It's one of my favorite bits of "showing, not telling" in this trilogy.

Gandalf knew about the ring, but he dididn't expect for it to be the one ring. as there are many more rings like it. Not just the gifts to the other races. There were lesser rings before them.
Gandalf actually cameback to the shire 17 years later from his research.

I mean if you're a being like Gandalf, you don't want to see someone using a magic item lightly. Even best case scenario isn't good.

I'm late to the party here, but an additional thought on the Nazgul and water since it's a common misconception from the movies. The first time at Bucklebury Ferry, the water was too deep for a horse to try to cross the water. At the ford outside Rivendell, the Nine know that the river is the border of Elrond's domain and they know to fear his power. That's why they hesitate before continuing.

Before the birthday party, Gandalf knew that Bilbo found _a_ ring, not that he found _The_ Ring. As Gandalf chides Bilbo in Bag End, "There are many magic rings in this world, and none of them should be used lightly!" To the best of Gandalf's knowledge, The One Ring had last been seen three thousand years ago hundreds of miles away in the River Anduin. Gandalf gradually grew more suspicious and fearful that Bilbo's ring and The One Ring might well be one and the same, but it took quite a long time to confirm his suspicions. In the book, _seventeen years_ pass between the party and the rest of the action of the story.

    • @ShadowyFox_86
      @ShadowyFox_86 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Exactly. Best case scenario, he found one of the lesser rings that had been lost. Using magic without knowing quite how it works is dangerous, doubly so in Middle Earth.

Gandalf does know the history of the ring, but he didn’t know this was the one ring. There are many magic rings of lesser power. Kind of practice rings, you might say. Since Bilbo found his ring in a cave, and the one ring was lost in a river he wouldn’t immediately know it was the same one until he learned Gollum’s part in the tale.

  • @Makkaru112

Firstly: All 16 rings were meant to go to the elves (300-500years world of infiltration and deception down the drain) but Mairon of the Maiar disguised as a high elf named Annatar when he came to the elves pretending to be an emissary from Valinor on behalf of the Valar so it makes sense how alluring the ring is and how strong it’s pull on people is. (A bit too instant in the movies though) Galadriel soon saw right through him and especially when after speaking with him regarding not remembering him when in Valinor long ago where she learned from all the Valar thanks to being dominantly Vanyar/Teleri side over her Ñoldorin side where she gleaned from that encounter that she did not study under Aulë the Vala with any elf named Annatar ! But later named Sauron by the elves meaning deceiver! After all of this, The three elven rings were made in secret without Saurons touch upon them thanks to Celebrimbor! Remember Gandalf before he became Gandalf was the same species of entity Sauron used to be!! Wow hey? The Rings, in this case, would have lost their powers eventually due to the lack of the One Ring and possibly because they were designed to defeat evil, and evil, in the form of Sauron, had been defeated. The Three Elven Rings served their purpose for a long time. Two out of three of them had several different bearers Unlike the other Rings, the main purpose of the Three is to "heal and preserve", as when Galadriel used Nenya to preserve her realm of Lothlórien over long periods. The Elves made the Three Rings to try to halt the passage of time, or as Tolkien had Elrond say, "to preserve all things unstained". I can expand upon this based on any further statements and questions you have for me as a reply to this comment ! ❤
There is problem here with the Rings, the Three were supposed to be never touched by Sauron and that's why they were not corrupting…Sauron had not taken part in their making which made the Three more 'pure' unsullied by his dark power, unlike the Nine and Seven Rings! But Sauron in the show touched the very material they were made of!!! So technically he could have tainted them and corrupted!
Even appendices of Lot tell us the order of making the rings, so they didn't even need the righs to more detailed writings in UT or Silmarillion:
    1200
Sauron endeavours to seduce the Eldar. Gil-galad refuses to treat with him; but the smiths of Eregion are won over. The Númenoreans begin to make permanent havens.
    c. 1500
    The Elven-smiths instructed by
Sauron reach the height of their skill.
They begin the forging of the Rings of Power.
    c. 1590
The Three Rings are completed in Eregion.
    c. 1600
Sauron forges the One Ring in
Orodruin. He completes the Barad-dûr. Celebrimbor perceives the designs of Sauron.
    1693
War of the Elves and Sauron begins.
    The Three Rings are hidden."
'Did you not hear me, Gloin?' said Elrond. 'The Three were not made by Sauron, nor did he ever touch them.
But of them it is not permitted to speak. So much only in this hour of doubt I may now say. They are not idle. But they were not made as weapons of war or conquest: that is not their power. Those who made them did not desire strength or domination or hoarded wealth, but understanding, making, and healing, to preserve all things unstained.
These things the Elves of Middle-earth have in some measure gained, though with sorrow. But all that has been wrought by those who wield the Three will turn to their undoing, and their minds and hearts will become revealed to Sauron, if he regains the One."
The One Ring’s power over people explained here:As for the rings given to these groups:They were all meant to go to the elves but Mairon of the Maiar disguised as a high elf named Annatar when he came to the elves pretending to be an emissary from Valinor on behalf of the Valar so it makes sense how alluring the ring is and how strong it’s pull on people is. The elves are more ‘magical’ than other races. They were the first race created by like the highest god Illuvatar. They’re meant to feel otherworldly because they are immortal. The elves are leaving middle earth to Valinor also known as the undying lands, it’s essentially heaven. They’re the only race allowed to go there and live with the Valar (gods) and Maiar (sort of angels). Elves actually lived there and then sailed to middle earth so they are returning home. When they die (either from being killed or of a broken heart) their souls go there. No other race goes there and it is unknown where their souls go when they die.
The wizards are maiar, 5 of them were sent to middle earth to help the people fight against Sauron (who’s a higher level Maia but corrupted). They can/will also go to Valinor.
Elrond is called Elrond Halfelven. His line have the choice of continuing to live the immortal life of an elf or a mortal but still longer than average life. If they choose mortality they can never go to Valinor. His brother chose mortality and basically founded the kingdom of Numenor which no longer exists by the time of these films. The descendants of numenor have long lives but are still mortal. Elrond chose immortality. His daughter Arwen has the choice and is considering mortality because she loves Aragorn.
The Nazgul are afraid of water. The water god Ulmo hates Sauron. And he often is just in the water traveling. If the nazgul cross water and he’s nearby he floods them. So nazgul are always hesitant to cross. Hard to show in a movie though so they just say it’s elf magic.
I don’t know what happened to the rings the dwarves had. But Galadriel has one of the three rings given to the elves. Gandalf has one, it wasn’t his originally but was passed to him. And Elrond has one, but again it was passed to him from the original owner.

    • @scalefree
      @scalefree 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

The flooding of the Bruinen was absolutely done by Elrond with Gandalf's assist, mainly adding the horses to the rising water. Ulmo played no direct role I'm aware of.

    • @Makkaru112
      @Makkaru112 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

@@scalefree Ulmo did as he resides in Middle Earth WAY more than he spends time in Aman, lime next to zero time in Aman and he loves the Children of Illuvatar greatly but it was nice to see the extention of what could have happened since every Descendant of Beren and Luthien had a grand story ndue to the fate bore upon them before Beren even met Luthien when he entered into Doriath. it makes more sense that Glorfindel went the other direction and it would distract Sauron as his eye was always on the movements of Glorfindel and easy to find because the Maiar can sense spiritual heat signatures in a sense.

There's quite a bit of non-English dialogue in these films. It's usually subtitled. Here's what they're saying -
When Arwen first greets Frodo, she says _Frodo, I am Arwen. I'm here to help you. Listen to my voice and come back to the light._
When she and Strider are talking by the horse, this is the dialogue:
Strider: Stay with the hobbits. I will send horses for you.
Arwen: I'm the faster rider - I will take him.
Strider: The road is too dangerous.
Arwen: Frodo is dying. If I can get him across the river, the power of my people will protect him. [in English] I do not fear them.
    Strider: As you wish.
At the river ford, when she challenges the Nazgûl, her invocation is unsubtitled in the movie, but here is the translation regardless:
Arwen: Waters of the Misty Mountains listen to the great word. Flow waters of Loudwater [the literal translation of "Bruinen," the river they're at] against the Ringwraiths!
The Ringwraiths don't fear the water so much as they're aware of the threat posed if they try to cross it - which is aptly demonstrated moments later as they're washed away.
Later, in Rivendell, when Strider and Arwen are talking in front of the broken sword:
Arwen: The Shadow does not hold sway yet. Not over you and not over me.
Then it cuts to them on the bridge.
Arwen: Do you remember the time when we first met?
Aragorn: I thought I had strayed into a dream.
Arwen: Long years have passed. You did not have the cares you carry now. Do you remember what I told you?

When you put on the ring you go to the “Unseen Realm”
It’s sort of like a plane of existence between life and death. You’re hidden in the “seen” realm, but everyone in the unseen (such as the Nazgül and Sauron) can see you.
The other rings: Sauron wasn’t able to control the bearers of the Dwarven rings, but it corrupted them in other ways. It amplified their wealth and their greedy nature, which eventually attracted dragons (who like hoards of gold etc) which destroyed their kingdoms, some of the rings being eaten by dragons, some made their way back to Sauron. The Elven rings were outside of Sauron’s plans. He initially went to the Elves in disguise to teach them how to craft magical rings, as he promised them that it would allow them to maintain their magical kingdoms (Rivendell, Lothorien) 3 rings were made without Sauron’s knowledge, and since he never learnt their locations, they were uncorrupted. These are the 3 Elven rings from the prologue. They were given to Galadriel, Elrond and Ciridan and sent into hiding. Ciridan eventually gave his ring to Gandalf when Gandalf arrived in Middle Earth.

Ya it's not the One Ring's appearance that makes everyone covet it, it's the way the Ring works on the minds of everyone near it and the more powerful or ambitious you are the more susceptible you are to the machinations of the Ring.

60 years passed between Bilbo finding the ring and when you see Gandalf come to the Shire for Bilbo's 111th birthday party. I won't go into the time compression between the time Gandalf left again and when he came back to tell Frodo to leave the Shire. I'll just explain that Pippin is the equivalent of a teenager/young adult in hobbit years at 27-29 while the other 3 are considered fully adults because they are all over 33.

Big themes in Tolkien are that the smallest of people can do the greatest of deeds.
Think of the Ring as a metaphor for your own suffering or addiction or obsession. Maybe it’s the drink every night, maybe it’s the like on a YT channel, maybe it’s even the one thing you can’t ever escape and is always present, like your own thoughts of recalling your perceived ineptitude. Tolkien wrote an amazing story that can apply to YOU in a way you find fitting. So do just that.
I’m happy to see you venture into Middle Earth. Have fun, friend :)

My favorite story and movie series of all time. The Ring moves by ensnaring users and altering its size to either leave (as with betraying Isildur and abandoning Gollum) or to make its way onto someone (as with landing on Frodo’s finger).
A point I always thought was brilliant about the Ring. It looks like an ordinary gold band, yet people go crazy over it. It’d be too easy visually speaking to be hooked on it if it looked like a Super Bowl ring, but the fact that it looks plain is a testament to how powerful it brings out lust for power.

Nice ship you have there :) Many parts of Tolkien's mythology was focused on this - ship sailing, magic ships, imperial fleets. There are also 3 great heroes - of long ago ages - who were mariners - one of them was Earendil, father of Elrond of Rivendell. The topic of ships is there becouse there are 3 big places in his universum separated by Sea - first is huge continent of Middle-Earth - where the action of "the lord of the rings" is placed, or I should say the action is placed only on the north-west part of the continent with climes similar to Europe between Tuscany and Iceland, second is continent of Valinor (Immortal land, important in later part of the movie) - where live those who are immortals Valars - think about them as Greek pantheon or Norse pantheon but they are only gods of Nature, servants of Eru - transcendent God creator who settled them there as protectors of the Earth (Arda), Maiars - angelic servants of Valars, and most of elves. And there was third place smaller than those two - island of Numenor, the finest land of mortal men, given them as a gift becouse of their alliance and help with wars between elves and Morgoth - Sauron's boss and main satanic power there - long story :)

The One Ring was showed by Jackson's movies like something inteligent and live, like a horcrux in some sense with some particles of Sauron's soul trapped there. It was not as much "alive" in the book, but well, IMO its justified interpretation or rather expantion of the original by the director.

Just a headsup, but you will want subtitles going forward. Tolkien was, first and foremost, a linguist. He wrote the languages in these books, and then built the lore and stories around the languages AFTER creating them. So now and then, you'll get them speaking in Elvish or something, and you'll need your subtitles.

There's quite a bit of non-English dialogue in these films. It's usually subtitled. Here's what they're saying -
When Arwen first greets Frodo, she says Frodo, I am Arwen. I'm here to help you. Listen to my voice and come back to the light.
