Respectfully caution against oiling teak decks. Most high-end (million+ dollar range) yachts allow their teak decks to go grey and we generally encourage our customers to do this as well. Teak does not splinter readily so there is little danger of that so long as you steer clear of bleach-based cleaners. Boat soap and a brush only for cleaning. Also, teak decks become incredibly slick when oiled. Not safe at all. Most teak oil products (Penofin and the like) generally only last one season in high traffic-areas, meaning re-coating is needed on a yearly basis. If you don’t sand off all of the old material in the lower traffic spots, you end up with discolored splotches and areas of thick, slick film. It really is NOT worth it. If you absolutely MUST put something on your decks to add color, go with Semco (only lasts ~6 months) but leaves NO film on the surface so the decks retain their traction.
Ahoy Wizard, I’m a yacht Captain in Miami Florida. Love to see you and Mrs. Wizard getting so involved in “the life”. Words of wisdom on the teal floor, use Snappy Teak part 1 and 2 to initially clean it or even a very light sanding depending on the life remaining on it, then maintain it by just using the powder version of oxy clean to scrub any grease stains or dirt. It won’t get terribly dirty being that the boat is out of the elements for the most part. If you use teak oil on the floor it will wear fast on high traffic areas and not look nearly as good. 6:40 The garden hose line as discharge is not a good solution. It will allow a lot of smells pass over time which makes a quite unpleasant experience. There are dedicated hoses for this purpose. Those are quite pricy but worth it.

halon system or at least that's what it used to be. Xintex fireboy is the most popular, you also want the system that shut's down the engines and generator in the event of a fire. The boat needs wiring and hoses redone. Boats can go down pretty quick if a hose bursts, you need to test all the seacocks periodically as they can and do get stuck in the open position.
2:40 Most important is to avoid fire on a yacht. Gasoline fumes are the major cause of boat explosions, and because they usually happen when someone is aboard people often get injured. Petrol vapor is heavier than air and it will settle in the lowest areas of a boat, usually the bilges, and will explode violently when there is heat.
Yes, I was taught by a boat surveyor to put my head deep into the engine bay and take a deep breath through my nose to check for any fumes before starting any motors or electrics………….😳
Depending on the boat, the fiberglass around the wood stringer are the actual strength and the wood is more just to form the glass around, other cheaply made boats use fiberglass more to just hold the wood in place.

Haha the pool noodle to nudge Car Wizard with is priceless. That yacht has a lot of mechanical systems on it. Stain the rest of the floor boards. Too bad about the Carver stringers. You guys have fixed a lot so far and looking good.

Classic challenge, Mrs Wizard. I can see why you’d have pause. Stain would definitely look nicer, but then you got another maintenance item to keep it nice. If you’re satisfied with the color and texture of the weathered teak, you can save yourself a seasonal project. Maybe save the refinish for when you’re going to sell it😊
I am really happy that you guys found this Trojan. They really are great boats, built well, and I think you will find plenty of enjoyment out of this vessel. Poor Carver- unfortunately that is the plight of many older boats. The Carver would never approach the build quality of your Trojan however.
I love all the Mahogany all over the inside and teak all over the outside. Really classic motor cruiser you've got there Wizard you old sea dog! I look forward to seeing the teak properly treated
Thank you Mr and Mrs wizard for showing me some of the many things I need to look for before taking on a similar project. Ive dreamed of getting a yatch for many years I now feel closer to that dream!
Mrs. Wizard, suggest you put the handle back on the sink false front and buy a kit that allows it to open up. You put a tray inside attached to the sink false.front to put brushes, sponges, etc. Also, the kitchen sink faucet is dripping. I know Mr. Wizard will be thrilled about that. Nice job on the cleanup/makeover. The team looks fantastic! 👍
Awesome to have a covered slip! Before watching the updates on the Carver, I was going to comment that the Trojan had a very dry bilge and the hull looked to be in immaculate shape for an old yacht.
Wizard, I'm glad you found that on the carver before putting it in the water. Another thing I would check is the transom. I had to scrap an otherwise perfect boat because the transom rotted out
Couple of questions: 1 - Could you go over fire suppression system? 2 - Do both props rotate in same direction? PS: Recommend taking USCG safe boating class.
Not an answer: but most boats have counter rotating props to reduce vibration and unwanted steering. It’s kind of like a wheel in the sense that if both rotate counterclockwise, the stern will drift left, And Vice versa. It’s also more efficient to have counter rotating props.
Also; I second the whole taking USCG classes thing. I’m so glad I did! Taught me a bunch. Also, anyone born after ‘81 ( I think ) has to take it ( I think ). It could just be a Missouri thing though.
If they offer a lighter stain, go for it for contrast. There will be someone who would love to have the Carver as a project boat. Glad both of you enjoy working on the Trojan, you can really tell the difference.
Stain them and good on ya, mates! Such a thorough job on bringing her back to life! Love you two! Sure would love to meet you two AND drive my cars to you, Mr. Wizard, for a go-over, one at a time, of course! 💛 from the NM Beach~
@@weirdmatter I think the Wizard's thirst for knowledge, work ethics and more has paid for the yachts myself...He's an exceptional mechanic in a craft that many in society take for granted! EARNED EVERY BIT of his success!
Hollo Wizard's your question regarding the floors within the Boat bi -all means use Teak oil for the floor planks fyI- use painter's tape on surfaces that you might not want the stain too be used and good luck with your boating adventures .
Staining teak just adds labor to maintain them. In addition, dark decks absorb the sun's heat, making them uncomfortable to walk on and adding the heat load on the A/C. Leave them natural, staining will only make them look like vinyl teak immitation.
When first arriving we always turned on the bilge blower to clear any fumes and we also pulled deck covers to smell the bilge to make sure. Most fires on gas powered boat are in the beginning.
Watco Danish Oil for teak. Teak is too oily and will not take stain well. Caution - do not leave oily rags in the boat when you’re done (spontaneous combustion).
Wizard, have you thought about using expanding closed cell foam to fill the voids in the rotted Carver stringers? Many boats use foam as a structural component.
Foam is not a structural component as foam has no strength. But it provides a scaffolding to the fiberglass on both sides and acts like a I beam, which adds rigidity to the fiberglass. The fact that the Carvers bilge floors have rotted out plywood cores shouldn't compromise the fiberglass's integrity, hit them with a rubber mallet, I will bet there still pretty strong.
You guys are doing a really great job with this boat. As for the deck boards, figure out what kind of wood they are before you oil them (it doesn't look like teak) - a different treatment might be more appropriate.

When you have more than one head it’s a larger boat. Has a grinder pump too grind #2’s
Aside from the 2 years of abandonment, that is a really well taken care of 47 year old boat! Now, time to get a drone for some on the water shots of the yacht. Great find Wizard!!!
That's some pretty nasty wiring going on there, I'm sure it's on your list. Beautiful boat though.
Classic challenge, Mrs Wizard. I can see why you’d have pause. Stain would definitely look nicer, but then you got another maintenance item to keep it nice. If you’re satisfied with the color and texture of the weathered teak, you can save yourself a seasonal project. Maybe save the refinish for when you’re going to sell it😊
Wizard: the generator is very quiet
The generator: 4:01
"IT'S WHISPER QUIET!"
I'm sure it is with the floor board in place.
@@LambosOnly WHAT???
@@LambosOnly Jet aircraft engines are sometimes described as "whisper quiet" too.
@@garys9694 I was referencing a Simpsons episode where Dr Nick is selling a "Juice Loosener."
I am really happy that you guys found this Trojan. They really are great boats, built well, and I think you will find plenty of enjoyment out of this vessel. Poor Carver- unfortunately that is the plight of many older boats. The Carver would never approach the build quality of your Trojan however.
Safety: are those batteries tied down? A large passing wake could be nasty! Cheers
I love all the Mahogany all over the inside and teak all over the outside. Really classic motor cruiser you've got there Wizard you old sea dog! I look forward to seeing the teak properly treated
The teak trim looks great! I’d do the deck with the teak oil, but that’s my preference.
Thank you Mr and Mrs wizard for showing me some of the many things I need to look for before taking on a similar project. Ive dreamed of getting a yatch for many years I now feel closer to that dream!
That’s why you should always get a boat surveyed to find out it’s faults to check if it seaworthy or not!
Most new boats are all fiberglass these days. No wood. Sorry to hear about the expensive lesson.
awesome job on the woodwork Mrs Wizard. a big yes for doing the floor also. My OCD could not get away from the tap dripping :-)
24:30 After you guys fixed all of that stuff? The engines, the paint, all the interior stuff? It's scrap? Wow.
You two are doing a really nice job getting her in tip top shape. I like the light /dark contrast if the deck and trim wood.
Those Onans are legendary overbuilt had many of them in rvs
The best! I have a bunch even large 150 kw unit.

The teak oil is FANTASTIC!!!!! Never noticed David's tat on his right arm before. YOU GUYS ROCK!!!!
The Mighty Wizard might consider a sleep study, it might be a lifesaver.
He's just husky
You are right. Sleep apnea shortens a person's life. Causes hypertension and a host of other medical problems.
Very true !!
Cpap is the answer for me, and losing 50lbs really really helped.
I completely agree, I use a machine. It helps greatly with my sleep.
They are called BOAT for a reason: Bust Out Another Thousand!
Awesome to have a covered slip!
Before watching the updates on the Carver, I was going to comment that the Trojan had a very dry bilge and the hull looked to be in immaculate shape for an old yacht.
That’s a really nice home away from home
Wizard, I'm glad you found that on the carver before putting it in the water. Another thing I would check is the transom. I had to scrap an otherwise perfect boat because the transom rotted out
Couple of questions:
1 - Could you go over fire suppression system?
“Steers like a tank”??? You’re killing me! It steers like a twin screw destroyer! Freakin’ Army vets and their boats… Go Navy! ⚓️
he wants to rename it to... some one really needs talk him out of that.. and explain why... bad juju
I think the white deck looks great! Goes well with the cushion colors and also compliments everything!
That's so funny Mrs wizards pool noodle idea, made me laugh.
Stain them and good on ya, mates! Such a thorough job on bringing her back to life! Love you two! Sure would love to meet you two AND drive my cars to you, Mr. Wizard, for a go-over, one at a time, of course! 💛 from the NM Beach~
So Hoovies indirectly paid for all the yachts
Also wizards very early retirement..
@@weirdmatter I think the Wizard's thirst for knowledge, work ethics and more has paid for the yachts myself...He's an exceptional mechanic in a craft that many in society take for granted! EARNED EVERY BIT of his success!
Didnt this use to be a car channel-??
And the insurance, mooring, fuel, and party girls.
That Trojan is sweet!! You should be so proud of yourselves for the amazing work you did on it!! I would love a boat like that!
Noooooooo please stain the base bottom boards, will look SOOOOOOOO good!!!!!
Hollo Wizard's your question regarding the floors within the Boat bi -all means use Teak oil for the floor planks fyI- use painter's tape on surfaces that you might not want the stain too be used and good luck with your boating adventures .
I would definitely stain the floor, darker floors age better overtime
Darker floors also show Alot more dirt
Wouldn't it be easier to clean off with the water around the boat?
Staining teak just adds labor to maintain them. In addition, dark decks absorb the sun's heat, making them uncomfortable to walk on and adding the heat load on the A/C. Leave them natural, staining will only make them look like vinyl teak immitation.
When first arriving we always turned on the bilge blower to clear any fumes and we also pulled deck covers to smell the bilge to make sure. Most fires on gas powered boat are in the beginning.
Stain the floor for sure! Dang y’all made that yacht look amazing!
Oil the teak please. What you've done is beautiful and oiling the deck will make it beautiful as well! Nice job Mrs. Wizard!
Stain that deck and preserve its natural beauty!!
Love the stain Mrs. Wizard. Great job! I would stain the floors also as I just like a darker wood color. Keep up the great work!
Stain the floor! Looks great overall!
Get rid of the other “Yachts” and make this the King
Very nice. You two are hard workers and very inovative.
