Hearing directly from a FAA representative is very informative. Instead of hearing someones interpretation of the rules or their feelings of what the FAA is doing, hearing it directly takes the quessing out. It allows the FAA to get out accurate information to the people. It's a win for the FAA and for the ones the rules will apply to. Great job with this one.

It's definitely great to see... I still have mixed feelings about the rules and rules to come. Now. if I'm sitting on the front porch I'm not supposed to fly the field in my back yard but with remote ID I could fly around the block. The problem with that is if I go to a Park everyone will know who I am and where I'm at.
Everything is changing and all we can do is make our voice heard about loosing our freedom and the right to fly anywhere from a safe height over a few people in passing is OK and use a strobe lights to fly at night and just use common sense and do the best you can to comply with the regulations and have your number from the FAA on the drone I ordered a sticker with my number and phone number on it for around 10 bucks

This is why complying with them gives them dangerous credibility. The only answer should be two middle fingers held high, or you'll lose everything. Non fudds have been pointing this out for decades.

@@AlienDrones Hi Keith, I have a question. How does the FAA view theatrical performances with drones? The ones where they fly at night and create 3D art. The way I read the law the pilot must operate only one drone at a time. How is it that they can have hundreds of drones in the air driven by computer and only one pilot? It defeats the whole purpose of optical line of sight because you cannot be looking at 100 different drones simultaneously.

When I saw that the video was 40 minutes I just knew I wasn't going to watch the entire video in one sitting. It was so interesting that I ended up watching the entire video from beginning to end. Excellent interview with a lot of good information. The only thing that surprised me was that in the discussion of Category 1 drones, there was no mention/reminder that we're talking about takeoff weight. Prop guards are going to put pretty much every popular high quality mini drone well over the 250 g limit. Manufacturers are going to have to produce special edition batteries like the ones sold with the DJI Mini 2 in Japan, in order for their drones to meet the 250 g limit at the same time as they meet the no exposed rotating parts requirement.
Alpha a85 has dji fpv and prop guards sub250.
I appreciate the spectacle of this comment. BUT it is widely known the Mini 2(opposed to the mini one weighing in at nearly exactly 249g) the Mini 2 weighs something in the 230-237g range. I don't think adding the prop protectors would put you over 250 :)

This guy seemed to know what he was talking about and knows alot about the drone community so I have a little more faith in the FAA now. @@oemglobal3535 The actual usable info is that they are trying to maintain a high safety record while expanding the flight load of the national airspace to include the use of all levels of drones (UAS).
@@oemglobal3535 Of course, nothing personal, after all we don't know each other and it's just a discussion over point of view, always a fleeting proposition at best. From what I've seen of hang gliding (Torrey Pines) and ultralights I'm not concerned about them at all like I would be about drones flying BVLOS. Ultra lights are few and far between in the urban and suburban environment while drones flying BVLOS have the potential to be far more present in these areas and the injuries that could occur would be to non participating bystanders rather than pilots and passengers (pilot/passenger deaths and injuries dominate rather than bystander deaths and injuries).
My point in my earlier comment was that it appears that the overall long range theme of the FAA program regarding drones is to develop a regulatory basis that will allow safe BVLOS while maintaining a backward compatibility with "recreational" use using an appropriate "common sense" level of "self certified" pilot responsibility that one should always expect to see in any case.
As far as your Gotcha moment, I see it more as a caveat moment to remain alert to. Exception 44809 is certainly a work in progress to be hammered out in more detail and hopefully not by the courts alone and as the last resort.
It is strange that ultralights are as lightly regulated as you point out. I'm curious to know how that came about.
@@oemglobal3535 this is a very good point. Perhaps the ultralight market is deemed small and exclusive enough that they are less concerned about occasional fatalities? It's hard to fathom the reasoning.
@@ChrisTietjen_00 yeah, manned aircraft certainly do have a built-in deterrent to reckless operation, and as I indicated elsewhere, ultralights are rarer than drones. So your points are well taken here. At the same time, while this rep's presentation comes off as effective UAV-friendly PR, I'm cynical and skeptical of the stated rationale for some of the rule-making, particularly remote ID requirements (as I also stated elsewhere).

There's so much info on this video with a lot nuances that sometimes it was hard to follow which rule and in which instance the rule applies Kevin was talking about. I think a written summary (or maybe another video) would be very helpful.

BVLOS - you got your DJI guys flying a couple miles out in busy places - and you got guys like me FPVing around trees and outbuildings - never more than a couple hundred meters out, on our own properties out in the sticks - nobody around. But the FAA puts it all together, into one stupid bundle of criminalized RC activity.
This feels just like the ATF "letters" clarifying the rules.

@@krotchlickmeugh627 Pretty much right. I understand grandma and grandpa are tax payer, they don't like those pesky kids nosing around flying around their house. They have to have someone to call and complain to, since they are dearest tax payers that's their right and they should have someone to call, so I understand the non drone friendly side of the population who has to be quelled, and at the same time in the end well pleased. Everyone on the other side is Us, trying to think we can exercise good common sense, use a strobe at night, starboard and port indicators (sea terminology I know 😆). Stay well away from people and their property (120 meters up should do the trick) don't hover over anyone or anything that could cost life, limb or damage to personal property, of course.
When I don't want to or need to worry about using my drone for$ I shouldn't have to worry about coming up with$160.00 for a part 107 in compliance, as I really don't need it as a recreational flyer... But then after this, well sounds like everyone needs it or there's a good chance at some point day, night or wherever, you are going to probably have done something wrong in the eye's of the FAA. Common sense is great and I'd love to think I can count on it, but it be damned depending on who see's you and go ahead and report you. It's just all too much, it's boiling down to goVt over reach and communist Marxist control. Make a mistake (that didn't harm anyone or anything) and it just doesn't matter because it's your butt and pocketbook getting the rewards of this system we set up by the people for the people, it's not working anymore. Too much red tape bs when rc helicopter and other crafts have far more damage to inflict potentially, yet don't have any of the scrutiny laid upon the drone community. I would say look at the monster we've created, ..but I don't take any credit for anything to do with this monster they've created which is better said, a plain cluster fk.

Also, aimed at the FAA, I would like there to be some consideration in regards to the accessibility of using drones for personal purposes, in a not-for-profit situation.
I see no reason that a person should technically need a Part 107 remote pilot certificate if they decided to, for instance, take a photo using their DJI Mini of their yard to help determine where to plant a tree, garden, etc.; However, right now, it kind of feels like that is the case, given the rules as written right now.
Funny thing is I was using my mini to inspect my own roof which is much safer than me climbing on the roof. The rules seem to say I need a 107 part B which makes no sense. If I see missing shingles or flashing I would then climb onto the roof to inspect and repair as needed. The drone is much safer way for just a simple inspection.
@@worldofzap I guess the FAA would say that you not risking your butt unnecessarily is "payment". XD
How the fuck would anyone know that you're inspecting shingles anyway and not just flying over your house? I doubt if you announced it on loudspeakers where your entire neighborhood heard it you would ever hear anything about it back in a billion years.

I'm just saying that honestly, the way the rules are written is silly / not ideal, and also (as you point out) not really enforceable.
I'm saying the regulations should be reevaluated and redone, IMHO, to be less ridiculous.
Make a mistake and get a $10000 fine plus potential legal fees.

loved FAA interview. I haven't as yet heard an explanation as to why FAA cares if you make money from drone pictures/videos. And yes I am very new to drone flying, I have viewed many videos explaining a lot of the rules of the FAA and part 107. Reading part 107 was directed at all the legal definitions that were overwhelming. Hope you do more FAA interviews that helped reduce a lot of my concerns. Thanks a lot.

It feels like the FAA has used BVLOS as the carrot for trying to induce acceptance for RemoteID. The reality is the BVLOS will require MUCH MUCH MUCH more than just RemoteID for a UAV to qualify for BVLOS. So I consider some of the past FAA communications to have been a bit sloppy at best if not disingenuous in directly linking RemoteId to BVLOS in an effort to "sell" RemoteId to the non-commercial UAV participants (i.e., RemoteID = BVLOS).
Kudos to this FAA rep for at least acknowledging that RemoteID is simply a small building block towards a UTM system (which I believe is likely many years off) which ultimately will create framework for BVLOS for certain classes of drones (e.g., likely only commercial drones not consumer drones because of the fees and additional equipment required). This is why I have a problem with the FAA using BVLOS as the carrot for acceptance of RemoteID...As consumers we will pay the RemoteID "tax" and the Commercial UAVs will reap the benefits. Also I find some of the the Privacy implications of the current RemoteID standard to be totally unacceptable (e.g., broadcasting the exact location of the pilot AND making that information available to JohnQ public via a simple app on a smart phone).

I would love to see the weight of all required safety equipment ie lights, prop guards, ads-b etc be exempt from the aircraft weight category limit or raise the category 1 limit enough to allow the new safety equipment on current category 1 drones that met the sub 255g limit before.
Cant do that! Its about safety so total weight is the bottom line.
@@WW5RM It's called grandfathering in . . . happens all the time in aviation. When new equipment laws are drafted for older existing equipment, exceptions are made.

So what you are saying is aviation and UAS follow that same rule? If so that is great but as I've said I've not seen or heard mention of such. UAS being the new kid on the block it seems that doesn't apply. Or isn't common. All I've seen is the opposite.

The Mini-2 with Prop Guards does NOT qualify as Category 1 because the Prop-Guard puts the weight of the drone "and anything attached" over the limit of 0.55 Lbs. If you manage to acquire a Japanese battery, (Good Luck!), which is lighter than the US model, the drone including guard stays under 0.55 Lbs., thereby qualifying as a Cat-1.

Never let the faa or anyone keep you from flying a drone! Obey the rules but don't get overwhelmed with it you can learn how to do it safely and otherwise just keep flying! The law is actually on your side this time

Please ask about the need for a spotter on 250g drones doing fpv. They have better visibility than manned aircraft and have low risk of serious damage.

Great no nonsense interview. Have dealt with FAA all of my career as airline pilot and have found that like any organization, there are good and bad experiences. They are people also and if approached that way instead of the "Big Brother" assumption, you will fare well!
For Manned Aircraft they made sense. They have fucked up repeativly the drones and had the courst tell them such more than onces including the current suit over Remote ID. NO that are not good for drones NOT AT All. Only thing they are woried about is Comerical and HUGE operations not hobbiest and small people.

@alien drones ... Just got into drones. I understand this video was released years ago. Has there been any changes on the beyond line of sight rule?
For VLOS they actually clarified it a bit with some recent documents, but it has not relaxed. I did a video on the documentation where this is discussed: th-cam.com/video/jEADpjbtLZk/w-d-xo.html . If you are part 107 you can get a waiver but it is still very difficult, but not impossible. For recreational flights there isn't any way possible to fly BVLOS...

Overall, very informative! There is a problem when discussing the "simplest" Category 1 Drones. Adding prop guards (84 grams) to a Mini 4 Pro removes it from Category 1! The DJI Avata FPV Drone (with built-in prop guards) weighs 410 grams. It won't be too long before every drone owner must be Part 107 certified. All drones, regardless of weight with a camera, will also need to be registered and operated by only a Part 107 pilot. Remote ID will be the hammer behind these new laws!
Hey Keith, I bought a air 2s and I know it falls into the a2 category but I’m confused on what that means restriction wise for me? I’m planning on getting my part 107 anyhow but I’m just looking for some clarification on what I need and what I need to know to avoid the boys in blue? What steps and documentation exactly do I need in order to fly my drone legally? I understand the LAANC procedure and how to use air maps is there more crucial information I need to be aware of even if I get my part 107

So I wish there was a place where you could find exactly how to fly legally anywhere under any conditions, but depending on what you're doing it can't really be answered in a short answer here, it will take a little research on your part. I'll include a few links below that will start to pull this together. The Category 2 only applies for flights over people and vehicles, which you can't do at the moment with the Air2s. If you're thinking of a 107 class, take a look at Pilot institute as they do a decent job and full money back for the course *and* the test fee if you don't pass. There's a few things you need to do to fly legally, and of course you'll learn a lot regarding the 107 once you take that, and for recreational pilots a good place to start is here: th-cam.com/video/82r7oIyEfSI/w-d-xo.html as well as the FAA website here: www.faa.gov/uas/recreational_fliers/ .
