  • I go on the hunt for the best Chorley Cakes in Chorley! Join me for a tour of the town and the famous Chorley Market! Will I find Chorley Cakes in this Lancashire town? Will they match up to the taste test?
Chorley is a town and the administrative centre of the wider Borough of Chorley in Lancashire, England, 8 miles (13 km) north of Wigan, 11 miles (18 km) south west of Blackburn, 11 miles (18 km) north west of Bolton, 12 miles (19 km) south of Preston and 20 miles (32 km) north west of Manchester. The town's wealth came principally from the cotton industry.
In the 1970s, the skyline was dominated by factory chimneys, but most have now been demolished: remnants of the industrial past include Morrisons chimney and other mill buildings, and the streets of terraced houses for mill workers. Chorley is the home of the Chorley cake.
A Chorley cake is made using currants, sandwiched between two layers of unsweetened shortcrust pastry. The Chorley cake is significantly less sweet than Eccles cake, and is commonly eaten with a light spread of butter on top, and sometimes a slice of Lancashire cheese on the side.
Chorley cakes are a close relative of the more widely known Eccles cake, but have some significant differences. An Eccles cake uses flaky puff pastry, which after baking is normally a deeper brown in colour. The other difference is that the currants in the Eccles cake are often concentrated together in the middle while in the Chorley cake the fruit is usually evenly distributed. It is not uncommon to see some sugar added to the fruit, or sweeter raisins or sultanas used. Locals often refer to Chorley cake as Fly Pie.

You should have gone to the Bees Country Kitchen just off Market Street. We make our own Chorley Cakes and they are just the best even though I say so myself. We even have our own branded packaging.

Good old Booths, I worked there in the 70s when the shop was on Market Street. They were a standard stock item back then along with Eccles Cakes. Those items along with pork pies are at the top of our "what we miss list" since we arrived in Australia. Interestingly we can buy Bury Black Pudding here.

Ah that’s interesting that Booths has been in the town for so long. I haven’t tried Eccles cakes yet but I think they are quite similar!

@@andrewemmerson When I worked there in the early 70s it was know by some older ..sorry more mature) folks as the "New Booths" as some will remember that the "Old Booths" needed to be demolished after an accident during renovations.

In the early 70s there was a young man worked there called "Les" ....way out here in Australia I read an article on the "Chorley Guardian" newspaper site when the shop moved to its current position to where the bus station was when I lived there.

@@hwallen9316 those folks would be going back a bit! I don’t remember an older Booths although we didn’t go to Chorley very often and it was more to the park!

I've replenished B and M, with Chorley cakes, in my time. Previous career stints, you see.

@andrewemmerson Well, it was real. Maybe they were made in Chorley too. Similar to the Booths. They had red wrappers, back in the day, 18 years ago.

They sell that brand of Chorley cakes in Tesco Leyland maybe a 5/10 along with Eccles cakes.

Didn’t expect to see you in our neck of the woods! Lived here 25years and had only one Chorley cake, maybe you can see why they’re not widely sold! Traditionally not sugared and eaten with thin covering of butter and a side of Lancashire cheese 🌹
