    I live here, I often forget how lucky I am to have this at my doorstep. Not sure if you mentioned it but one nickname for the Cathedral is "The Ship of The Fens" due to Ely being on a hill surrounded by flat fenland, the Cathedral could be seen for miles and the surrounding fenland made it almost unreachable. It appeared as if a ship on the horizon. I made a video on my channel celebrating the cathedral last year.

      It's often easy to forget, but once you remember it, like yes, this is why I love this place. My friend, you're very lucky to call this slice of heaven home forever. Thank you for watching and leaving a comment. Cheers 🤍 Jess x

    Thomas Gambier Parry (one of the artists who painted the ceiling) was the father of Sir C. Hubert H. Parry, composer of the song Jerusalem, sung every year at the Last Night of the Proms. Sir Hubert was also Director of the Royal College of Music and Oxford Professor of Music.

    Love the symbolism of the labyrinth! ❤
    I think a lot of cathedrals and parish churches were built in the cross shape... I've always liked that. 💒
    And so cool that they have a Saxon artifact that old!

      I think that all cathedrals and churches, were deliberately built in the shape of The Cross. Thats the whole point!!

    Ely cathedral is an imposing building. I've not been there for many years, in fact not since I moved to the North East of England. Interestingly, and something I didn't know until this video, is that St Etheldreda had links with the north east, a fact that I'd missed on previous visits to the cathedral.

    Imagine how impressive this building would have been when habitation was very limited around and about
    its structure in a sparsely populated rural setting.

    Hello Jess and Chris, drove close to Ely Cathedral many years ago on my way to the Mildenhall airshow and I remember how magnificent it looked so thank you for showing me the overwhelming interior. I must return to see this for myself. Septembers in the UK are usually really nice so hopefully you will be able to get out and about without the need for an umbrella. ❤ Thank you.

    Another lovely tour, and impeccably narrated Jess. Next time be sure to check out the misericords, which are particularly fine at Ely. Misericords are carvings underneath the choir stall seats. They provided some relief for the choristers during long services. They were small ledges which could be leaned against, whilst standing. Often they would be carvings of animals, or fantastic beasts etc. x

    great video and it showed the inside of this majestic building. there is a cathedral in england built beetween 1950 and 1962 coventry's 14th centrury cathedral was totally destroyed 14th november 1940 during a bombing raid by the germans

    • @captaintorch983
      @captaintorch983 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It wasn't totally destroyed. A small part survives, and remains consecrated ground.
      It was recently commandeered by the local Muslim community and used in their Eid celebrations. An utter disgrace!

    You said that the great East window tells the story of Jesus, 'birth, ministry, death and reincarnation'. Did you mean resurrection, instead of reincarnation?.

      @@AndrewStead-wv4poYes! I did an open-mouthed double take at ‘reincarnation’ too! (But I quickly worked out what you really meant). Love your videos: it’s always fascinating to hear a non-English person’s take on our country and you do it so thoughtfully and well. Keep up the good work.
