SALISBURY CATHEDRAL - Amazing Behind The Scenes Tour

  • While I may love luxury hotels, Michelin starred restaurants and First Class airplane cabins, it's the people I meet and things I get to do that make it great to be a travel writer. When I was in London, I took a day trip out to Wiltshire (www.visitwiltshire.co.uk/). I visited the city of Bath and its Roman ruins, the incredible Salisbury Cathedral (www.salisburycathedral.org.uk/) and finally, Stonehenge. Here's a tour of the cathedral.
Construction on Salisbury Cathedral started in 1220 and it has the same effect it did when it opened almost 800 years ago, it takes your breath away. If you go, be sure to do their Tower Tour, so you can go up into the structure above the floor, like I did. They also have an original copy of the Magna Carta, which is on display in the Chapter House.

I remember taking that same Bath, Salisbury Cathedral, Stonehenge day trip in the 90s. I'm currently reading "Sarum: The Novel of England" by Edward Rutherfurd, a fictionalised history of England that spans from 2500 BC through the 20th century. I'm currently reading the portion of the book when Salisbury Cathedral is being built. Each era within the novel features a fictional character that is used as the reader's point of view, and in the Salisbury Cathedral construction era the writer uses a master stone mason. It's interesting to see the bit in the Chapter House, because in the book it is this master stone mason who carves the friezes of the various stories from the Bible which the tour guide points to with his laser. Anyway, sorry for the lengthy comment. Really enjoyed your video! Thanks

No problem the video was great. I didn't know they had a tour that allowed you to go up to the gallery. It was thrilling to learn that those were the same ancient beams of wood!
I was hoping you'd ask if they cured the wood first-- let it dry out and age before using it in construction. Do you kmow?
Yes in those days they were all about doing the new thing, much like people for much of the 20 c to be honest .
