Ball has to Hit the Wicket (Sticks), when the batsman is not in the crease (behind the line). It can be directly or the Wicketkeeper can hit the ball at the right time.
I will explain for those who do not understand Cricket: In order to dismiss (out) the opponent there are several ways. M.S. Dhoni is a wicket keeper that means he gets to stay nearest to the wicket (those three wooden rods behind the batsman) or also called as the stumps. Wicket keeper can dismiss the batsman (Batter, that's how Americans say it) by the following: 1) A direct catch after the ball touches the batsman's bat but without the ball hitting the ground. It doesn't matter if the batsman is inside or outside the crease (the white line). If it is a direct catch, it is considered out (at 1:50). 2) Hit the stumps with the ball in his hand when the batsman is out of the crease. The crease is supposed to be batsman's safe line. He is safe only till any part of his body such as legs, arms or his bat (while he is holding it) is inside the crease (from 2:11). 3) Or throw the ball at the stumps when the batsman is out of the crease (at 4:15). Pls like it so that Rachel can see this comment and is not confused anymore :D
I would like to share one thing about Dhoni that if u see at 5:55 while Australians are running in between wickets even if the ball is coming towards to Dhoni for runout he acts like it’s not coming so that opponent will slow down by watching Dhoni’s body language then gets out immediately. That’s the greatness of Dhoni. Even in the last scene if that out misses india will loose the match. That’s why he runs that long and hit the wickets instead throwing it to wickets. Truly inspirational person.

He did not smack the stumps...he flicked the ball to redirect it to the stumps. The ball hit the stumps after hitting his hand. There are 3 replays of that from different angles for referee to see and make sure that it was not his hand. If the hand is used to smack the stumps, the ball has to be in the hand.

Answer to your question, as a fielder/player you can either hit the stumps/wickets with the cricket ball in your hand and dismantle the bails or throw it from distance directly. If the batter is short of the crease or if his bat is not grounded when the bails are dismantled he would be out. What’s amazing about Dhoni is not just the speed but it’s actually his ability to preempt what the batter is going to do next and be ready with his action, that makes him a legend.

I wish you must play soon in this Covid season :)

He did not smack the stumps...he flicked the ball to redirect it to the stumps. The ball hit the stumps after hitting his hand. There are 3 replays of that from different angles for referee to see and make sure that it was not his hand. If the hand is used to smack the stumps, the ball has to be in the hand.

Answer to your question, as a fielder/player you can either hit the stumps/wickets with the cricket ball in your hand and dismantle the bails or throw it from distance directly. If the batter is short of the crease or if his bat is not grounded when the bails are dismantled he would be out. What’s amazing about Dhoni is not just the speed but it’s actually his ability to preempt what the batter is going to do next and be ready with his action, that makes him a legend.
