You can stand behind the line. You can stand as close as you want to the wickets (3 sticks). Batsmen move forward or backward to adjust their position according to the length of the ball i•e where the ball is pitched on the groud so they can play the best shot.
Sometimes they go ahead of the line to reach beneath the ball to hit a big shot and a few times they miss the ball so they get stumped by the wicketkeeper.

@@king_has_no_clothskul8635 Boucher has that record which are just catches because he played nearly 150 and mostly of them in bouncing pitches of SA. That doesn't scream insane skills. In SA and Aus most of the catches goes to wicketkeeper, so it's not that big deal. In India and catches mostly go to slip.

As a wicketkeeper, Dhoni knows the gap between the fielder behind and the moment the batter tries to invent a shot. His advance presence of mind allows him to block the elevation of that gap because the ball is close to the middle stump. The batter only has the option to go to that side of the gap. As a professional cricketer, Dhoni knows the batsman will try this shot any time because the field balling is set to encourage this shot. It is also a strategy not to give room to play the offside shot because the field is set packed leg side, and the bowler balls continuously close to the stumps to pressure the batsman. The conventional option to play the shot is to sweep leg side and play singles. This will encourage the batsman to try something different, like a lofted shot or this kind of reverse shot. When the batsman plays this shot, Dhoni knows the batter only has the option to play that side because the bowler does not give room offside. He is continuously attacking the middle and offside of the stumps, so there is no way for the batter to play a shot other than that gap. When the bowling is done by a fast bowler, wicket keeper has to be way back from the wicket. While when the bowling is done by a spinner or slow bowl then wicket keeper remain close to wicket.
In the last clip, that was a memorable moment. He decided not to take a risk of throwing the ball from the distance, in which case India could have lost the match. He decided to run as fast as he could so that to reach before the batsman and take the wicket. Thats how wise he is. He can read the situation better than anyone.

Actually, it's even more challenging than that for the keeper because the batsmen CAN have their feet or a foot inside the line if he wants to play closer to the wicket, but some of them or sometimes they'll play outside and these are the moments the keeper has to be on the lookout for. It comes and goes in the blink of an eye.

Most cricketers and serious watchers can judge where the ball is going when batter approaches to hit. What is special for MS Dhoni as a keeper is to stop it with the foot (100% valid but no one evolved it). He is the only one doing it or could think of doing it in reflex. Recently seen SA keeper to do that once in CWC 2023. There won't be anyone like MS Dhoni Cricket will have in next 100 years.
Ms Dhoni once break Usain Bolt 20 meters record. During the race in which he created the record, Bolt took 2.89 seconds to cover the initial 20 meters which is almost equal to the length of a cricket pitch. Dhoni had once run 20 meters in just 2.7 seconds that too with his pads on. He outran Usain Bolt by 0.19 seconds.

What he is doing in most cases there is actually called 'Stumping'. Simply, while batting, the batter should remain inside the crease (the white lines there depict the crease). Still, he can step out and hit the ball but he sure has to hit it or else if the keeper gets the ball, he can remove the bails and it will be given OUT as the batter is outside (same as that of runout). One thing the keeper has to make sure of is that he removes the bails with the ball in his hand.
The scenario you mentioned first was THE BATTER TOUCHES THE BALL AND KEEPER CATCHES IT BEHIND (like the catcher!) THAT IS 'OUT - CAUGHT BEHIND'
This one I mentioned is BATTER GETS OUT OF CREASE / CROSSES THE LINE TO HIT THE BALL AND EVENTHOUGH HE DIDN'T GET ANY TOUCH, STILL THE KEEPER CAN REMOVE THE BAILS/STUMPS WITH THE BALL AND THATS 'OUT - STUMPED' (Only applies if the batter is still outside at the time of stumping).

Most of Dhoni's brilliance can't be captured in statistics. E.g there is no metric to measure overall cricketing brain, street smartness, decision making as captain, critical thinking, winning from a losing position etc. Someone in the future trying to find cricketing legends purely by statistics e.g Highest run scorer, highest wicket taker etc might not find Dhoni in the list but for us lucky people, seeing him play and get better of the opposition in the face of seemingly insurmountable tasks was and will remain the biggest delight. Whenever any team was about to lose badly commentators would frequently say, "Only Dhoni can win from this position". Well..Some things can just be experienced not defined or explained ... 😊

Batter 100% can stay behind the line all the time and play (so he doesn't get out like that), its bowler bowls like that to drag batter to play like that (so back foot goes out of line) and batter misses it is where MS Dhoni shows his magic!

8:10 The batsman have to be inside that line or in the crease all the time. The batsman leaves the crease or goes out of that line to play shots.... Some balls can be played better if the batsman leaves the crease. That's where the Wicket Keeper has the chance to make the batsman stump out. MSD in my opinion might not be the best in other wicket keeping skills but he has the best stumping skills that exist in Cricket.
