- Today, we’re breaking down my spare NA VG30DE block and prepping it for the machine shop. While at it, I’ll compare it side by side with my old TT block to reveal the key differences between the two. Are NA and TT blocks really that different? You might be surprised! In most cases, swapping an NA block for a TT isn’t necessary-you can work with what you have. Watch to learn the crucial differences and what you need to know before building your 300ZX engine!

You are the Z Guru Billy and I know you don't like it BUT TRUE You are awesum brother and Thku, just that SIMPLE.🙂💯
Thank you!
Great breakdown of the NA vs. TT. That is the first time I have seen such a video.
@@bspradley thanks Bud!
You are doing this platform a huge service.
Thank you!
Good watch. I plan on a doing build breakdown & cost for my recently completed NA-TT setup. Give the guys some light
Another Billy classic! Super informative! Keep it coming!!!😎
@@salvatorelb1338 thanks man!
Very informative Billly. Never seen a side by side comparison (like you said). That was a great shot of the castings in the water passageway as well.
@@rudimerm7686 thank you!
This is great info. Even though I don't own one of these and probably never will, I still like them and want to grow my knowledge. Also, I didn't know you were down in Sarasota! I'm up in Pasco County. Neil helped me tune my old Miata.
Keep the videos coming! Thanks for your service!
@@tayloraudioslc I got you!
So you're telling me theres hope for my N/A 300zx 🥹
Of course, there's plenty of NA-T builds doing well. I think highest hp on the stock block was 783
That depends. Are you willing to tear your car apart, lose parts, break 30 year old bolts clean off at the head, pull all your hair out and lose faith that the car will ever drive again? And THEN are you willing to reach deep down inside and find the motivation to put in real blood sweat and tears to do it right, all the while getting distracted by wire brushing and spray painting all the worrisome rust you exposed along the way? And then are you willing to spend double, triple or even quadruple your original budget when it turns out you need more parts than you thought and what you really need is part # unobtainium? Or you could just enjoy it NA. If it's a 5 speed, that's what I'd do.... If I had any sense.
@randoawesomemix9501 he only needs to do all that if he wants more than 400hp on 93. As long as he's got a healthy engine, you can bolt all the TT stuff up to it and tune it at the 10.5:1 ratio.
I should have prefaced my previous reply by saying 783 on E-85 specifically.
What got you interested in the 300ZXTT?
I still remember what got me interested. I was 5 when it came out. I knew the name Nissan because my mom had a 1985 Nissan Maxima and I loved it. It made me like the name Nissan. When the 300ZXTT went on sale, I dreamed of owning one instantly. Turbo power sounded like magic to 80s kids. Twin Turbo could only be ultra magic to my childish logic.
I was 14 when I read the May 1998 issue of Sport Compact Car. The main article was how to get 450HP from a 300ZXTT. It explained how it worked. It explained what a heated wire MAF was. It was then I knew I would have what it takes to work on modern cars. Back then they said the 300ZXTT MAF was the bottleneck at 400 horsepower. The JWT Twin POP split the airflow and reprogrammed the ECU to double it. Nowadays, people have a much more effective method, a Corvette ZO6 MAF and some MAF adapter.
I also saw a photo of the R34 GT-R about to go on sale. I loved the look of it. AWD just made it that much more exciting. That one was blue and ever since then I preferred blue ones.
I lost interest in the 300ZXTT over time. However, I still look at articles about it because it helped shape the course of my life. I was practically born a car guy. 3 Nissans were influential in shaping that direction.
Did you ever encounter a Z32 Fairlady TT? It is and RHD 300ZXTT. The version made in 1998 and later had a few changes to it. As they crossed the 25 year rule of importing, I told anyone I met that if they always wanted a 300ZXTT, maybe they should get one of those Fairlady versions. I was hoping that when the 25 year rule was crossed, guys would import a bunch of RHD versions of the RX7TT and Supra TT, then greatly raise the affordability of those cars. Plus, there were a few late variants that may have been better.
I didn't expect the Devil Z you encountered to be a Z32. In Wangan Midnight, the Devil Z is a Datsun 240Z/S30 Fairlady with an RB engine.
While I may have some origin story behind what kind of car guy I am, it didn't explain everything. I had a burning desire to visit Japan when I was 5. I thought certain Nissans lit it. I thought maybe video games did. Then I thought maybe pictures of Tokyo at night did it. I realized that was not an explaination. Other people saw the same things and most kids never got the desire. I did not see many people who got the desire until the 1990s, when I encountered serious anime fans. I can't say some giant robot lit the desire either.
I was bummed when the 350Z and 370Z came out and there was no turbo engine. When the new Z came out, I was thrilled. I joked "Mirror mirror on the wall. This is the greatest Fairlady of all."
Pushing the 300ZXTT to over 1000HP on the street would have downsides for different reasons. The kind of turbos and turbo lag to get it might not make it that much fun. I don't see how it would be that much different from those extreme Supra TT builds.
a lot of aftermarket pistons require the use of NA oil squirters or you can very carefully bend the TT ones to work due to the design difference
Most aftermarket pistons don't even consider the use of oil squirters.
Sub’d for the build! Why not run higher compression pistons ? Even if it’s a turbo engine .
@@victorbernabe4294 in short- once you start running higher boost on these engines they like the lower compression.
What is up with EP performance other than astronomical prices Billy? I talked to them and all he said was don't do that.
TT has inconel exhaust valves, NA does not. Check the numbers at valves, other is 30 and other 40. Same numbers are in the block.
Billy! Billy! Billy!
