It never occured to me that this would be an optimal way to play. Inn spam + bread eco. I always played it like a medieval sim city xd
Just wanted to know if this guide is still viable in this year 2024
Just bought this gem yesterday. Surprisingly for an old game, its quite realistic. How you gather and processes the resources. You can be either an autharcic - or merchant kingdom.
The castle building is still confusing to me. Too bad there's no tutorial in the HD steam version.
Overall a soliddddddd 85/100
outside of game tutorials just telling you to make a wall with towers and a gate, there isn't exactly an official guide for it. but experienced players have shared enough knowledge over the years to help with the more advanced techniques behind it. i could name a few things if you'd like:
- use map borders and inaccessable areas like cliffs to your advantage to function as a costless invincible wall even better is a top cliff start so you can fortify up there really easily.
- try to build in composite squares to be space efficient with the buildings you NEED in your inner walls.
- have atleast 2 walls attached to one another with 1 being lower than the other higher to prevent assassins from climbing in. (assassins can't climb a wall while on one if its a different height)
- alternatively to the above, use natural water bodies and dug up moats by slaves and spearmen to keep them away. will also work against anything other than ranged siege equipment. enemy slaves/spearmen may also try and dig them up.
- build stairs to towers to get archers in and then remove the stairs to make an inaccesible defense tower/post.
- let slaves and spearmen place pitch and death traps where you think the enemy will come through often so you can burn the marked areas with fire arrows or slavers. ( can also serve as a desperate last defense)
- try to resort to square towers for the big ones to get the most amount of space for archers
- if able, make additional walls in 1 block gaps with few entrances to the inner walls in order to stall the enemy and force them into tight gaps where you could kill them with traps or fire throwers.
- don't forget to place a brazier on every wall and tower to give your archers fire arrows
- don't be afraid to experiment in the castle builder to test your efficiency :)
P.S: in case you're pondering what buildings are vital to keep inside, they would be your economical and military production buildings. since you can place them anywhere to get their effects for 100%. and they are the ones that allow you to keep affording new buildings and units. farms are restricted to grass and are thus often lost anyway if the enemy makes a serious push. might as well use your gold and leftover resources to buy food and eventually rebuild farms. and organize a push back.
@@aztekenen1 I actually don't like to use the corner as an advantage, because that's just cheating, hills, mountains and cliffs are ok tho.

it should be recorded forom the player perspective so we can see all steps, not guess what he is doing and how much of resources he has.
Ikr it was pretty frustrating for the guy learning actually, he didn't learn all 100 per cent, neither did I coz he had the same questions I had

2021, idk why im trying to learn play this game when I should go to work
My technique for the woodcutters (for me but u can also do it) is have not too many but not too few just right coz the wood is growing time to time and i will got infinite wood
But wood becomes obsolete in mid to late game, you basically need wood cutters only at the beginning, later you don't need much wood an you can buy it easily.
I usually cut away all wood coz it looks cleaner and we can place stuffs around hehe
How does he place the portable shields so fast? Is there a hotkey for siege equippement?

I'm confused as to why you build 5 inns at the beginning of the game before you even have any hops farms or breweries. Wouldn't that wood be better used to make more quarries and mines?
He bought 5 ale barrels for 5 inns. It immediately raised the popularity by +8, attracting many peasants. Now you can either raise taxes or lower food, or both. It's a good start, with that amount of gold you can just buy stone if you need.
Why all the cauldrons? And I know selling bread is low effort and almost automatic, but for both expanding amount of serfs and selling pricey goods, best thing is to set up workshops and sell weapons. You even have iron there.
If you didnt have the cauldrons they could rush you with the guys that torch your buldings
And they could mess up everything
Bread is faster and you will get much more bread than iron or weapons. Ultimately you will earn more gold from bread than from iron and weapons. Also brings food which is needed quickly, and raises popularity. It's a win-win-win scenario, that's why bread economy is the best.
I know this post was a while ago but he says why in the video. Each cauldron is 4 peasants. He’s increasing his pop count for money back from taxes. Then he destroys the cauldrons when he’s ready to build his army and has heaps of surplus peasants for fast training his army. Same thing with more than needed wood choppers. Set them to sleep when ready to go to war and you can train an army real fast with all the extra people :)

Absolutely wrong. If you'd were to make 6 wheat farms 1 mill is not enough. Your stockpile would just fill up with wheat and we don't want that. For 6 wheat farms you need atleast 3 mills. And just 6 bakaries maximum for 6 wheat farms? That's like using 1 ox texter for 8 stone farms.. 1 wheat farm is around 3-6 bakaries. IF you put the stockpile in the right way like I do.

You cant define that in numbers. It depends on how close farms are to the stockpile, how close mill is to the stockpile... You should just watch the number of wheat you have and if its rising, just put more mills. It's very simple. Nightmare, dont use word stone farm please xD
I know it's all decided by the stockpile placing and the granary placing. I carefully explained that in the video though, so no need to worry. And sorry for the word ''Stone Farm'' it should've been ''Stone Quarry'''.
Mr NightMare So approximately you will need around 24 bakerries, then set granary to double rations and let the castle grow. However if map has little grass, you may need to strike a balance between religion and ale coverage...
P.S. More people need more food.
P.S For example if you have 1 inn which has 100% popularity coverage, building 1 hovel will cause popularity coverage to drop. You can prevent that by building another inn, and that also increases ale consumption.

What is the use of so much water pots?
Taxation, since income is based on population. There's limit to how many peasants can sit around the campfire, so you need to keep your people busy to be able to bring more of them into the castle, water pots take 3 workers and don't occupy a lot of space, so they're the best choice for that.

It's easily the best game in the genre, definitely better than the sequels, which is a bit depressing to be honest. They've never managed to recapture the "magic" of this one.
For me it's one of those nostalgia games that I end up replaying every year or so.
Despite the game's popularity, you don't really see a lot of guides or tutorials (with the exception of the campaign mission perhaps), so the odds of getting a reply weren't as low as you think, especially within such a niche concept like the economy that has like 2 or 3 videos on youtube in total.
Anyway, enjoy the game :)

I think it is better to start from mines. Cause yiu can sold for a high price.in the market. Wrong strategy chosen by the player
it all depends on what you have available. in a high resource/money start, most people will immediately begin to spam woodcutters, stone miners and 1 or 2 iron mines to quickly get a castle up and running. in low resource/money games, you will often see only a handful of woodcutters and whatever works the fastest and cheapest to get the economy rolling. eventually a fair game will economically balance itself out though. even if takes a while for a low game to catch up.
No man, bread economy is the best. Getting bread is much faster than getting iron, stone or weapons. You also get a lot of bread, but you get little iron or stone. And also it brings you food.
It's much faster to earn 40 gold every minute, than earning 100 gold every 5 minutes.

the game has a bugs because you can make pop +300 and make a wood cutter sleep you use him in the army and the stone builld and
meatal give you the money and taxes and you can buy any thing to war because the
there are alot of bugs but most of these do not work in multiplayer. they are also not bugs you tend to discover accidentally. so it tends to be fine for an old game like this.
