  • This is a first taste of the Woodford Reserve Kentucky Straight Wheat Whiskey. This is a 52% Wheat, 20% Malt, 20% Corn, 8% Rye wheat whiskey put out by a distillery that I really enjoy. Let's see how it does.

    I was going to say that 8% rye is what you taste. Rye notes come off as smelly feet to me so I'm a wheated bourbon guy and a sucker for a sale. This went on sale and something told me to pass on it. Now the Double Oaked...........that's exceptional.

    Bought this a while back for $33 and haven't had it for over a year. I'd recommend it to anyone who is serious about whisky because there is so little wheat whiskey out their and its definitely different from Bourbon or Rye. To me its closer to a Scotch than a Bourbon. It does have some bite to it (probably young) but its off set with alot of fruity sweetness. Not my favorite but good to have at least one wheat whisky on the shelf.

      Isn’t this a bourbon?

    • @steveno7058
      @steveno7058 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@SocialDem86 Nope. Bourbon has to be over 50% corn. This is a wheat whiskey (over 50% wheat)

    I love it. Woodford is awesome across the board. Just picked up some of their rye.

      I'm definitely a fan of their rye.

      @@TheWhiskeyDictionary I let the wheat sit opened for a couple of weeks. Got kind of a 'cookie dough' taste on the finish, which I like. I agree, this isn't something you give to a 'first timer'.

    Woodford Reserve makes bitters. I think this is something you might want to review. Unlike Angostura which has a bit of a salty/funky taste (do they include anchovies?) Woodford Reserve's bitters are just bitter. They add a nice kick to an Old Fashioned that is distinct from Angostura.

    I have found this to be great for cocktails. I have made mint juleps with it and it seems to work great.in cocktails but not as much as a sipper

    I also noted the malted notes- but enjoyed it more after it opened up, picked up sweeter notes. This is not my favorite but it was more enjoyable after a few weeks! Don’t know why but I found that the double Oaked also did better after a week or so. Can’t be the proof - only 90.4.

    Odd, one of the better budget whiskies imo. Really nice for normally under 40.

    This is one that I was excited to try and I had a similar experience. I’ve seen some people that really like it though so it’s definitely important to take advice from people who already like similar things as you.

    I tried this at the distillery and wasn't too fond of it. Probably my least favorite expression in their core lineup. Bernheim from HH is much more enjoyable, has a 7-year age statement, and costs about $10 less.

    Great review, thanks for posting it. It’s interesting that I’ve been thinking about trying this, and *Voila!* you post a review. The Universe at work making my thoughts become things. 👍 The price in my favorite store is $33 before tax.
    Have you tried Old Elk Wheat Whiskey? It’s 95% wheat, 5% barley malt. I expected it to be ‘soft’ like the wheated bourbons I’ve tried, but it had this (good) little touch of spiciness to it. So maybe you caught some of that in the WR? This WR is on my list to try, but not at the top of the list…

      @@steveno7058 huh, never thought about it like that! You are right, it was more scotch like. I do like some scotch, but for some reason this stuff just didnt suit my taste... its honestly been a good while since i had it, so i dont recall my tasting notes, but i just recall off bourbon profile notes and the taste of disappointment 🤔
