Connor is not stupid, he's naive. He's fought all his life against beasties, who didn't use the type of manipulation humans are so good at. I love the fact that Fred said "grooming". Very apt!
yup, he was literally raised in the worst hell dimension and was manipulated all is life for the purpose of this birth. He's a victim of grooming and its so sad.
This girl getting killed in this episode is probably one of the more messed up scenes we see in either show, usually we see the aftermath of awful stuff or we see a victim walking into a place, screaming, camera cuts away and then the heroes come into the scene later or whatever. With this we actually get this poor girl like, begging and stuff. It's very uncomfortably real which emphasizes the horror of course.
Connor's been manipulated his whole life. He was raised in a hell dimension by a man determined to use him against Angel, to make him his instrument of vengeance. add that to the usual teenage sulkiness and hormones, and you get a kid any woman could wrap around her finger, a kid who doesn't understand trust and love, a kid for whom the worst kind of hell makes more sense than anything else.
But he still understood the concept of good and evil (we could see it through the season). I'm not saying that you are wrong but Connor was still an annoying idiot.
I'm sure many people have told you this but do NOT watch the intro for Season 5 episode 1 when you get there. It contains a couple of spoilers for the episode and originally aired without the intro or credits but all of the various streaming platforms show it as standard. Just close your eyes while music is playing and you're good. Love the reactions!
The way I look at Skip's explanation of everything coming together for the thing inhabiting Cordelia to have happened is it did happen this particular way, but it didn't have to be that particular way. That's how prophecy works. Prophecy's will happn, but the details are never known. Examples: 1) Buffy wasn't listed by name in the prophecy where The Master killed her, but her going to meet The Master cemented it would be her. It could have been a different slayer, though. 2) Buffy and Angel didn't have to be together and then break up to get Angel to LA. 3) It didn't even have to be Angel and friends taking this Cordelia inhabiting creature on. It could have been numerous combinations of people known to the show or unknown to the show. 4) Buffy could have stayed with Angel and been in Cordelia's position instead of giving birth to Connor. 5) It could have been Connor being the creature's father, except with Buffy as Connor's mom. The point to all these examples and the numerous more example out there is there are some things that needed to happen to have this thing give birth to itself, but Skip is wrong stating everything needed to happen exactly as he stated. Which is where Gunn's comments about the choices people make being free will come in.
@Buffy8Fan Skip is also evil, and has been shown to be a liar and manipulator. What he says might be true, or he could be lying in an attempt to cause distress or confusion. Yes, Cordelia was manipulated as part of a grand plot but the death of Gunn's sister does nothing to forward the conspiracy. Wes's sleeping with Lyla was an active hindrance to the plot. It gave him and the team access to information that was otherwise denied to them. Telling them that everything is preordained and that everything bad that has happened for years is part of your grand plan is a pretty good gambit. It could inspire despair, hopelessness, self doubt or just distract team Angel long enough to buy time for his master. Sure, there has been a lot of steering going on, but I suspect that Skip is claiming credit for unrelated events because he is a massive bastard.
Whoo, perfect timing. Sounds like Cordelia is going through an Angel/Angelus scenario, just with her Angelus being extraordinarily powerful. Darla explained what she was to Conner, you may have missed it, when he said she wasn't his Mom. I enjoyed Skip from the first appearance. Connor is aggravating, but extremely well written, he remains a child who grew up with no humans aside from a "father" who was gaslighting him from the moment he could speak. I know many people argue that Holtz loved him, but I think Holtz loved what he represented first, then I would hope there was some of the love that comes from watching a kid grow up. Even Holtz' last act was about manipulating Connor into killing Angel. Moving forward, a boy growing up in hell with no ability to socialize, no ability to develop social awareness, no experience at life in any sense. Then from hell, to losing his "Dad", to believing his biological demon Dad killed him, to his night with the drug addict girl giving him a good memory then betraying him, finally to Cordy. Should he be smarter by now? I have no idea, I'm not even sure how long he's been living in the real world. I do know that even for people who grow up normally, the level of stupid we're capable of when it comes to love and lust is startling. Plus, Connor grew up being gaslit, so Cordy...Cordelius(?), gaslighting him will feel normal to him, being told how to feel is normal to him. Ps, I know it sounds like I'm defending Connor, I'm not, guy still makes me sigh when he appears onscreen, I just appreciate how well written he is as an annoyance, if one we're supposed to empathize with... not actually sure we're supposed to empathize with him to be fair.
@@jonathanmays8203 No, not confirmed at all. Total fanon. And very unlikely that the idea was even on the Angel writers' minds. And if it had been, they would have just admitted it by now because they gain nothing by keeping it secret. There's been no such revelation, it's just a conspiracy theory.
@@Phireo It doesn't make the most sense, because the First wouldn't have felt constrained from telling Connor that Cordelia wasn't herself whereas as an agent of the Powers, Darla had to play by certain rules. Also, people who say it makes the most sense act like the Powers don't exist or never do anything, which they do.
I think Darla here was most likely the First Evil, and that it has been in a long term struggle against the Beast master since the beginning of time. There's a reason they're both rising to power at the same time. If the BM has really been behind everything that led to these events, did it bring Angel back from hell? Make it snow in Amends? Influence Xander and Willow cheating and Cordelia's money problems, in order to get her to LA? It's a mind fuck.
I have to agree about Connor. Yes. He has been through a lot and manipulated, but he has seen enough by this time to know what is right. I feel sorry for him but cannot excuse his actions.
I doubt Darla could've been Connor's imagination because as far as we know, he’s never seen a picture of Darla. The two camps of thought among fans are she really was sent by the PTB as she said, or she was the First trying to stop this because it's not part of the First's plan. To me, both are plausible.
Everyone from Firefly seemed to end in in BTVS and Angel. Here we see Gina Torres come to life in a bazaar ending, and Angel goes to his knees in awe of her, another rollercoaster of episodes we just know is going to follow. A very dark episode with Connor saving the Virgin girl from a vampire only for her to be given to Cordelia for human sacrifice, we are hoping she will escape, and even Darla appearing to Connor to beg him to not do it does not work. Cordelia still has just too much power over him. This of course is very disturbing as the girl mentions her mother, but the evil in Cordelia wins out. A brilliant scene with Wes doing his 'Hot Fuzz' bit with the gun finally dispatching Skip. A fairly decent episode, it was of course hard to match the 'Angelus Saga' but another one has now just become with this strange woman at the end. You are in for another wild ride with this new disturbing character.
God Vincent K Just acting so broken in this kill's me Im so glad many fan's year's later backed off I met him year's ago in 2009 during Mad Men he almost quit acting because of so fan's doging him almost turned into a Jake L situation, And yep good ol Show runner I know your done on Patreon but yep Charisma exit from the show grinds my gears to this day, I digress 😂 Stay awesome Dakara 🤘
So I have this idea that the plan to have Cordelia "ascend" as an angel then be brought back and carry another higher (?) being along for the ride, this character to become the Big Bad of the season -- this plan was there from the first time we saw Skip in _That Vision Thing,_ which is Episode 2 of Season 3, or at least by _Birthday_ (the episode in which she becomes part demon), i.e. long before Charisma (the actress) got married. In other words, much of the Season 4 storyline had nothing to do with Charisma being pregnant and Joss Whedon's reaction to it. How much had to be rewritten is something I've been trying to work out for years, but I guess that Cordelia's (possible) redemption arc didn't make it to shooting, and maybe Charisma was going to be the Big Bad herself instead of Gina Torres. Who is a fantastic choice, by the way.
A few people love S4 because of the twisty plot and overall terrifying big bad that resulted. But tbh, this is why I hate it even more: because they did those things that could've made it great, but did them instead rather badly with character assassinations left, right, up and down, side to side...
