What a change for our farm switching from a 4620 to a 4450. One of the many things I recall is how awesome that cab was picking corn after the frost came. No more warming my hands on the muffler of that open station 4620 during a Wisconsin winter trying to harvest the corn on our bottom land.

The 50 series marked an era...

  • @brendabird3443

I worked for a Deere dealer when they were released. First off, I was in the brand new "Waterloo Tractor Works" on E. Donald Street in February 1982 and watched the 8450, 8650, and 8850 roll off the assembly line. I have pictures that I took myself. The John Deere 40 series Row-Crops were still being produced that same day. In September 1982, I was able to drive BOTH brand new 4640-8 speed Powershift and a 4650-15 speed powershift, running together that day, both equipped with a John Deere 4600 on-land rollover plows. They both ran together in same furrow. What a comparison. Also drove a brand new 4450 with the 230 disk. I was able to drive the brand new 8650 later on that Fall. Only "50" series that I haven't driven: 4050, 8450, and 8850.

I really like running my bosses John Deere 7800 that they own to move bales with. Before I worked for them, they used to have 2 John Deere 4450 2WD tractors, but they lost their old 4450 in a fire. They bought a 7800 to replace that 4450. The other 4450 they have is used to pull a Kuhn Knight mixing wagon to mix feed for dairy cows.

Always like it when you put these classic videos together Jason; you do such a good job with not only the videography, but narration as well. Your 8850 looks beautiful and my other favorite on here is the 8650 pulling the air drill. I have more respect for farmers who are trying to do a good job with well-kept older tractors & equipment than I do the big guys who have all new and seem to want for nothing...maybe it’s bc I am the smaller guy with older well-kept equipment & tractors trying to make it.

I'll always be a bigger fan of the 20 series Deeres, but the 50 would definitely be in tight competition for a used machine if I were in the market. Classic, proven, power. No emissions and electronic garbage. Has AC and heat and MFWD. It's the ideal machine. My favorite has gotta be the 8850, daddy of them all. What can I say, I love the sound of V8 mechanical diesels.

Here in UK we had the 50 series but having smaller farms we found the
    2850
    3050
    3350
    3650
To be the most common esp on the west side of the uk.
My personal favourite was the 3650, 116hp but opened up to provide 130 hp.
This was just about the last generation of lever over linkage type tractors. Before all electric came in. I know a farmer who bought a 3650 in 85 and its still going strong..From new it had 3 oil changes per year i guess thats one reason why its still going strong over 11,000 hours..

The V8 engines just did not hood up. The failed in a few thousand hours in many cases. For Deere it is the way it is mounted on the frame. A vibration would occur and over time break the engine. The 8850 is this video is mine. It runs great.
