Sitting out in the river bottoms in northern N.D. under a blanket of stars with a crackling bonfire. Coyotes howling. Having a few beers, swaying to the music. Making sweet love in the back seat of my dad's car. It really happened, after our football game. I was dating one of the cheerleaders. She was beautiful. She loved me. I was handsome, virile, tough. Passion. Passion. We made it home safely. My mom had breakfast ready the next morning before I went to work. My dear, sweet mom. I love you mom. And my girlfriend? I don't know where she is, have no idea, that was 40+ years ago. I wish I'd known how to get her off. If only I knew then what I know now.
