Landstalker is a challenging adventure RPG developed by Climax Entertainment (who also helped develop the Sega Shining series). You play as an adventure-seeking treasure hunter named Nigel, an elf who's remarkably young-looking for his age (88!). After completing his latest bounty, he runs into a wood nymph named Friday who's being pursued over her alleged knowledge of the whereabouts of King Nole's treasures. After helping her evade her pursuers, the two team up as they set off for Mercator Island in search of the fabled fortune.
Are King Nole's treasures truly close by? Are they ripe for the taking, or still jealously guarded to this day...?
In ars4326 ( tasvideos.org/... )'s run, 100% completion is based on RTA strats and is defined as follows:
Collect all Life Stock (minus the shop in Kazalt)
Obtain all equipment
Collect all unique/key items
Complete all side quests
Activate all teleport trees

This is my all time favorite game for Sega Genesis, I remember getting this game back in 1993 when it barely game out, I was only like 4 or 5 at the time, I didn't see a single commercial for it or anything I just remember seeing it on the self and it caught my attention. I was little when I first started to play it, and ofcourse I couldn't read yet lol so didn't know what I was doing at all it took me years to finally beat the game and I mean didn't beat it will 2002 lol I had played the game on and off over the years and would just memorized what I had to do. I actually played this game before I even heard of Legend of Zelda, I honestly feel in love with Legend of Zelda because it reminded me of this game lol even though Zelda came out years before. I wish they would remaster this game with modern graphics and game play but ofcourse most will just compare it to zelda lol.
POPINCONEJO88 this is exactly my story when it comes to this game and I feel the same way. Someone should get their hands on the rights to this game and do a modern platform remake

The level design and labyrinths were amazingly crafted.
I cant stop play this game over and over because of it. Also logical director is genious! He made amazing traps and quests. I complete this game over 10 times with 99 lifestocks and all equips.
@@buoyancydabl I had a weird obsession with this game when I was a kid, I must have hired it out at least 6 times but I could never get past Greenmaze because someone else would always hire the game in the interim and overwrite my save. :(

I believe these levels were design to zone us out trying to it out. I had just joined the Army bought me a TV, Stereo and Genesis. Bought a bunch of games but this one got most playtime sitting in the barracks 😂

I have the Climax logo, (Friday the fairy), tattooed on my left forearm. This is my favorite game of all time, and to see a TAS of it is beyond bad ass. I can't do a statueless run in less than 2 hours... this is amazing.

Simple, lack of publicity. I was able to play it only because it belonged to a friend of my brother. Never met anyone else who knew of it.

Those trees have a fixed height, which is much higher than Nigel's jump height. If you look at that section, he throws the animal, jumps off the NPCs head, landing on the animal in mid air, then jumps again to get over the trees.
Oh my jesus. has exactly 206g to buy lifestock, thats when it hit me how well planned this run was. Insane.

I have been watching TASes for about 8 years now. This is the first one in a LONG time to make me squee. THANK YOU for running one of the most nostalgic games of my childhood!

The perspective is perfectly good, my only complain about the game is the lack of shadows so it's kinda difficult to see some objects position, but it's a rare problem. Other than that, it's an amazing game for the Genesis.
The developers made Alundra, a similar game to this for the Play Station, the perspective is a little bit different (45 degrees rotated) and they fixed the shadow problem.

The music in this game is underrated. I mean from really upbeat melodies to nightmare-inducing music...like 20 years later I'm still haunted by that first-level cave music...
This is an incredible achievement based upon the isometric scale of the game alone. But I never was able to complete this game with all the hearts so I'm super looking forward to watching all of this.

Wow, this was my favorite game on Genesis, I beat it a dozen times, but this video just walked through some levels that takes me hours 👍🏿
This game looks and feels just like Alundra, but with an isometric view and a harder to see through perspective
Fun fact: Most of the developers of Landstalker worked on Alundra later on, that's why they look so similar ;)

Well, if you're not used to isometric view, I understand you can be disturbed by this video, but I assure you, when you play the game, it is not a problem, at worst, you need 5 minutes to fully get used to it. Many games from the early 1990s used this kind of view, but Landstalker is the one using it best.
Well, there is one major drawback to how the controls work. If you individually hit any of the 4 directions, you will only walk in two directions. You have to hit diagonal to set it in the opposite axis, or just constantly use diagonal to move in the direction you want, which is harder than it sounds on an old genesis controller, especially in one of those parkour-esque parts of the game.
If they had just assigned each direction to a direction the the game and left it that way, it would've been far more enjoyable. Up should always go north-west or always north-east, it shouldn't shift, and that weird two direction problem just made Nigel feel clunky and hard to move.
It also helps to play it on an emulator, but I originally played this on my old Genesis.
I've wanted to see an official TAS/Speedrun of Landstalker for a good long time. Definitely saving this to watch later!
Damn, I never got past finding the snow spikes. Parts of this game were hard as hell for a kid back in '94.
Me and my brother used to ask the dude in the rental shop if anyone had got past the riddles. Took ages but someone cracked it and we continued that save file! Only to immediately get stuck again.
The sense of achievement beating this game ... delicious!
To be honest I like the Japanese artwork for this game than the American artwork. Plus this is one of those lovely hidden gems for the Sega Genesis
I was thinking the exact thing about the shadows and how it is a problem to know where in the air you are. As you said it's fixed in the beautiful spiritual sequel Alundra :)

You guys may know it, but in the german version of Landstalker for example Nigel loses all the money. It's all gone at the end. That's why you can see here raining coins and then it's all black. ...

This game was so good at giving an adventure Vibe! ive not feelt in other games closest came zelda.
The guy who recorded this video can't either. TAS means "tool-assisted speedrun". This run took in reality much more than 2 hours, and required the help of many people (see the link in the description). Maybe you already know that, but your comment seems to say that you don't so I thought I might explain why this video is not really that amazing. But still very fun to watch, and still impressive when you realize the amount of work behind it.
And it IS amazing.

Why do you obtain the fire sword yourself? Much like the Casino Ticket at 1:58:39 I'm fairly sure an enemy drops it after the Crypt if you didn't visit the soldier's house earlier in the game. Is it needed to save time in the previous dungeon?
No enemy drops the magic sword. It is possible to trigger a glitch where one of the magic trees will drop it.
Amazing TAS. Still why you walk into tree on 19:56? It's 5 extra seconds and you dont need it because you'll be there on 1:10:22.

Legendary, yes. Gathering snacks, I've only seen parts of this before.
This game was one of my first. After almost thirty years, this still has one of the greatest scores in vg history.

Amazing, but how does the battle with fahl work? 1:47:14-1:48:48 Is that a magic pixel? Fahl often cheats on me by striking after being defeated in a round, I can only beat him with the sword of gaia.
My sister had played this game but I was never into it because I suck at role-playing games until I looked at you tube and now I have gotten better at some role-playing games but don't have this one

the original skyrim - without quest marker and with completely stupid problems with super cryptic solutions. i remember loving and hating this game as a kid. i could not pass the town. the guides back then told me "visit every house and talk to every person". yeah sure, no, but thanks for wasting 5h of my life back then. twice. :D

This is a TAS run. In that specific room you literally have just not attack for about 15 seconds to beat it. The Tool Assisted Speedrun just put in some directional inputs that are impossible for a human to replicate at the speed it does. Looks awesome though lol

Something I've been looking for in this game has to do with Gumi (the village where the sacrifice is taking place) there's a cave entrance visible below the village in the bottom right. I could never find a way in there despite completing the game a bunch of times. Does anyone know what's in there or how ro get there?

You read the riddles andit gives you clues how to solve the puzzles.
