One of the most beautiful and heartbreaking opera endings ever written. Domingo is magnificent. Millo is magnificent. And Zajick is magnificent. And brilliant. Dolora Zajick is the greatest dramatic mezzo soprano of the present time.
Oh, you know why. The music bypasses the mind, shoots right through us with the longing that permeates "Aïda." One of the reasons I've always been mad for this opera is how Verdi will not allow Amneris to be just a bitch villain. Her great scene outside Radames' trial isn't there just to keep us listening. Amneris deserves the final words in the opera. Besides having had her heart torn apart by the loss of the man she loves, besides having to live with the regret of destroying an innocent slave who should have been a princess, Amneris represents the conscience of the victors of wars as she prays for peace. And I think it's in the music that we know she does not believe in her gods. Opps, sorry for gushing. Anyway, I got to see Price's final San Francisco "Aïda" back in 1984.
I have this on DVD, and according to the cover, this won the Emmy Award 1989-1990. This is one of the BEST that I have ever seen, if not the BEST. I think, like someone commented, Amneris, that spoiled princess, learns in a most tragic way that the world doesn't evolve around her. I think the least she can do for Radames now is to ask her father that Radames be remembered not as a traitor, but as a hero who saved his country, which he did. Heartbreaking, this scene. I really did cry.
Placido Domingo war der beste Tenor und jetzt ein begandeter Bariton. Trotz der jetzigen Situation.Vor 30 Jahren ? Einfach unglaublich - nichtglaublich. Seine Darstellungskunst in einer Oper war einzigartig.
er ist der wohl meistüberschätzte Sänger aller Zeiten. Technisch höchstens Mittelmass , alles in der Nase, einen hässlichen Klang produzierend. Als Bariton eine Witzfigur. Einer, der den Hals nie voll kriegen kann. Sein grösstes Talent ist, dass er sein Gequetsche als hochklassigen Gesang verkaufen konnte. Eine gute Höhe hatte erauch nie. Hören sie schon nur mal Bonisolli an, der sang viel besser. Von den früheren Tenorkollegen wie Filipeschi, Corelli, Masini etc ganz abgesehen.
I have this production on DVD ... I know there are newer productions available.. but rarely does incredible costuming, perfection of music and voices and truly impressive scenery all collide, at once, to give a lover of opera, perfection. It is so sad a scene.. what do we say when we know the end is inevitable and we are already dead?

В ней как бы раскрывается какая-то загадка нашей жизни и дается надежда на то. что Бог слышит вместе с этой музыкой и нас. Помню, когда я попросил впервые прослушать своего внука и внучку эту музыку, а они далеко не часто соглашались слушать классику, то оба сказали, что у них "мурашки поползли по коже".. Так мое восхищение этой удивительно прекрасной музыкой передалось и моим внукам. В.Смирнов
