    I guess I pissed off a lot of dads with this intro. In case you couldn't tell, I love this kind of music, so don't read too deeply into my taco-bell comment. As a dad would say, "quit crying about it"

      Why would you be counting the 6 8th notes as quarter notes? Would't that just make it 2 bars of 3/4?

    1: your hetfield actually sounded like hetfield to the point that my ear forgot it was an impression
    2: you become a father when u raise a child, u become a dad when u appreciate dad puns and/or dad rock. if this applies to any women reading this, too bad you're a dad now. if you look under your bed there'll be a new pair of new balances
    3: if this were on an album with "a truck is a man's best friend" i'd listen to the hell out of it tbh

I’ve learned more in 3 days than I have in 30 years thanks to you and more than that, getting excited because I’m beginning to understand music! The way you explain it has just clicked with me, thanks so much! This particular episode made me laugh a few times, the Taco Bell one lol. But the little clip you made was so funny overlaying Jame’s mouth...haha. The sample itself was great. This is definitely my favorite music instruction channel on TH-cam. The way you talk about composing, and the hidden logic in the compositional choices we make, jibes exactly with how I think about music. Of course you want your song to sound good. But part of what makes it sound good -- to my ear anyway -- is how the puzzle pieces fit together. When I think of great songwriters -- The Beatles, the Beach Boys, Nirvana -- I think about how they find ways to bend the form while using an underlying logic that brings it all together. Your analysis of the line cliche in "Something" is a perfect example of what I mean.

    Man, I tell you... I have never seen someone explain how to come up with a song in simple steps like this. Writing out and taking the time to explain how you came to the final riff, is absolutely impressively done. Easy to follow, and explaining the "why" you chose 6/8, what it sounds like, some characteristics you went for, it really makes the writing process easier when you have in mind what you want to evoke.
    I've seen hundreds of videos of people "cutting to the chase" and not really taking the time to explain it all as thoughtfully as you did, and it is extremely valuable. I hate bell notifications usually even from channels I love, but I can't not now. That's just too impressive to ignore. Thanks so much for taking the time!

    I’m a music theory professor and no, I would not fail you for saying you’re in the key if D Dorian.
    The key (pun intended) is the composers intention. Odds are Bach and Mozart wouldn’t have thought in D Dorian, rather D minor, with the G being a V/VII (even that’s not right, but I’m still pre-coffee this morning), but for modern songwriting D Dorian is fine.

    • @Henry-fv3bc
      @Henry-fv3bc 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@katorzhnik Why not? Let music theory evolve. Minor is a mode of major, but we're allowed to say "minor key", but not "Dorian key"?? Maybe we shouldn't allow people to say "major key" because after all the major scale is just the seventh mode of the Dorian scale! Not fair to Dorian. No need to impose that arbitrary distinction. If you're in "A minor" but your tonic chord is a D minor chord, then let's call the key D Dorian, it makes more sense!

    Genius level video. This teaches _so much_ about song writing in just 20 minutes. I think I need to watch this about 20-30 times to absorb it all. Epiphany after epiphany. I feel the urge to fire up my Linux guitar studio and Cry Baby wah pedal and play this all day long. Perhaps for a couple of weeks. Drive the neighbours crazy! Love the Hatfield impression! Thanks again, Jake - I learn so much from you every time.

    The idea of if you’re in dorian or aeolian mentioned at the end I think is funny considering that aeolian was originally just considered an altered version of dorian back in the medieval period with early Gregorian modes. So I’d say that the idea of using dorian with aeolian borrowed chords is more accurate to the original concept of the modes.

    • @clausion
      @clausion 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I didn't know that. I mean aeolian altered version of dorian. Very interesting, but with a lot of sense. Now I can explain myself why some songs using dorian it seems old, maybe even medieval to me, but never for aeolian.
