"Self esteem is for everybody!" And then the rest of the series was the most cheerful season in all of the Buffyverse and nothing bad ever happened again.
In Wesley's defense, Fred wasn't initially interested in him at all and he's been head over heels for her from day 1. A guy in that position is going to see signals all the time - even where none exist (because he desperately wants there to be signals), so he spends time training himself to ignore them from that particular girl.
I love love LOVE this episode. Spike’s reaction to puppet Angel never gets old. We finally get Fred and Wesley together after all this time too. Spike fighting the Angel puppet is one of my favorite scenes in the Buffyvers. As usual you’re asking the right questions. Do we trust Knox?
Hands down one of the funniest moments in Buffy Angel universe! Lmao 🤣😂 "Your a Bloody Puppet!!!!" James just fighting himself during this filming priceless 🤘
2:20 "This is going to be a scary one, isn't it?" 6:50 Nope. Angel being a corporate puppet has been mentioned before. Now we get to see him as that puppet. 10:32 David Fury making his 3rd appearance in the Buffyverse. His 1st appearance was the "mustard guy" in the musical episode of Buffy.
All your followers who've seen this episode before. "Yes Dakara this is a scary episode!" People fighting to control their laughter, "scariest episode of Angel!"
This is another Ben Edlund episode, who wrote that Lorne centered episode early this season, and as I mentioned below that episode you'll know his work from Supernatural. He wrote many Supernatural episodes, standouts including Bad Day At Black Rock, and The French Mistake, among others. Always loved this episode, and thoroughly enjoyed you having such a good time watching it. I actually watched this episode first as I've missed your last few Angel episodes, I'll be catching up now. Have a great rest of your week & weekend Dakara!
He also created all four versions of the Tick; the original comic, the cartoon, the first live series and the second live series. Angel EP and Gregor Framkin actor, David Fury, was Exec Producer on the last of these alongside Edlund.
Muppet Angel should have said, "I'm Count von Count." Hush was the episode with The Gentlemen. They did a similar thing about being clueless in Buffy when Zander told Willow she was like one of the guys and later Buffy told Zander he was like one of the girls. Joss Whedon loves the trope that no good deed goes unpunished.
I don't know if you you can still get them but just after this came out they released 1:1 scale muppet dolls of Angel. (Both vamped and non vamped versions.) They also went the extra mile and produced puppets Versions of Spike too. Lol
I haven't watched your entire backlog yet, but so far, listening to this channel is perfect. You react to all these episodes pretty much the same way I did. It's...nice to see somebody appreciate these as much as I did. I look forward to your watching of the rest of the season. And yes, this season needed Smile Time.
There are a few episodes in both shows that make you feel different about them on a rewatch, because you know, what's coming next. "Smile Time" is one of those. I always end up in tears at the end of it.
@@1Fyr although it is tough to watch, from another perspective, it is an extremely cool character arc for that actor. It’s an arc that goes from sweet to pure badassery.
Smile Time always a fan favourite. The Spike Angel Puppet fight was just hilarious. Seeing the puppet Angel in the leather coat is just so funny, and the constant bad mood he is always in because of it. The scene where the puppet has his hand in Framkin is quite disturbing, but then we have the meeting of all the puppets in a Mafia type scene adding to the comedy, then again the hand goes back into Framkin which is really savage. A great scene with Nina and Angel as the puppet, when he reveals himself to her she doesn't laugh and make fun like the others, but listens in a concerned way, we can see she has true feelings for him, Angel is of course terrified of what consequences might flow from it. Then we have the jump scare with Nina turning and grabbing him. Brilliant scene with Gunn and the Doctor, Charles desperate to keep his skills, and the Doctor blackmailing him to help him out with his shipment, we just know this is going to be a catastrophic decision. When Angel and the gang storm the set of Smile Time it's an hilarious fight, The Banana Splits type puppet had me in stitches laughing so much. The potential 'Fresley' relationship, if any two people were made for each other in The Buffyverse it was these two. However, in this universe as we know it doesn't necessarily mean happiness. S5 of Angel was an absolute Zenith for 'The Buffyverse' amazing episodes building up to stunning S5 finale. Could never understand why some BTVS fans wouldn't watch Angel, the best episodes of Angel easily a match for BTVS, and in many episodes surpassed it. I would say Smile Time was a brilliant innovative episode, and now from E15 to the end finale E22 are the best collection of episodes in The Buffyverse. Usually its the Buffyverse copying the X-Files for monsters and similar story lines, but this time the Kid's TV show idea from Angel was definitely used by The X-Files with creepy Mr Chuckle Teeth from the episode Familiar using the kids TV show to affect the kids.
one of my favorite episode of all time, it does bring the smile on my lips every time i see it. After you finish Grim and was checking we to watch next as a react from you, when i saw angel i knew i wanted to check the reaction just for this episode. Happy to see you like it too
The calm before the storm. One last chance to lighten the mood and have a good time before Whedon rips a hole in the world that can never be filled again.
Cheated again. Had to see your full reaction to this episode, and it was great! I'm with you, the cast and crew had to do a lot of retakes because someone just busted out laughing. Also, Angel as a puppet, probably not the weirdest thig the employees ever saw, but I'll bet it makes it in the top 10. Puppet Angel fighting Spike was just hilarious. Nina reaction was great, then the werewolf attack. Puppet Angel as a vampire,(puppet vampire Angel?) I'm willing to bet you want that one. The ending with Wesley and Fred was a long time coming, but hit the mark just right.
Ladles and jellyspoons, I give you... Ben Edlund ! * rapturous applause * :) - if you like his writing here, watch/read/watch "The Tick" (not necessarily in that order) one of his earlier/later efforts. And i've never watched it (though I hear good things :) but my impression is definitely that the reason this seems like a "Supernatural" episode is because that took a lot of inspiration from BtVS and 'Angel' - both kind of gave a lot of later shows "permission" to get a little weird (plus of course "Supernatural" ran so long they had plenty of chances to try lots of different things).
Gregor Framklin is played by Exec Producer David Fury; who was also 'They got the mustard out guy' from Once more with feeling. Whedon was supposed to write and direct this; and still retains the story credit. But had to work on Serenity at the last minute; So Ben Edlund ended up writing and directing. Instead Whedon does the next episode. This was the first episode after the cancellation was announced. The ratings improved nearly 20% on the previous week. If Joss had asked for early renewal or cancellation, after this episode instead of ep13; I think Angel would have got a S6.
They're lookin' at the wee little puppet man. 😂😂😂😂😂 For me this is easily the funniest episode in the Buffyverse and also the episode and that i rewatched the most. I probably would do much worse, i already started smiling before you started the reaction. Such a fun reaction from being worried in the beginning of it and than the shift to fun and laughter fro the moment That Angel turns into a Muppet. I adore this episode. I always laugh so hard. And then I swear up and down on all that is the Buffy 'verse to keep my bloody mouth shut about what comes next, unlike all the spoilers in the bloody comments. Seriously, you people, why? Whether she has or has not watched it at this point, you do not know. Don't even hint,
IIRC during S4 of Angel she was dating Angel Exec Story Editor Drew Goddard; aka Ultimate Drew. Goddard went on to write and direct features Cabin in the Woods and Bad Times at El Royale, as well as write Cloverfield, World War Z and the Martian. He also Created the MCU TV series Daredevil, and served as director and Exec Producer on the Good Place.
