- Today, I will go over 5 of the most amazing things I have learnt about Sweden after being here for almost a year. Sweden is such a lovely country with even more lovely people. I'm always a bit surprise that Americans that love talking about their level of freedom can't fathom the freedom to walk in the nature. ;)
Tell me about it. Being a Halfbreed with a Swedish mom the level of freedom our summer vacations brought us can not be compared with the false security of USA... when my parents retired they were stationed in Sweden and stayed there, I followed them after I graduated. I'm never going back. Sweden is my home now. 🇸🇪❤
@Marcus Sweden is a very individualistic country, the people are independent and individualistic. The state being expected to do certain things does not mean the people have no responsibility. Dying from not being able to afford healthcare is not a freedom.
@Marcus There are problems with waiting lines but that is not an issue with the system, it is an issue with implementation and funding and can be fixed fairly easily. In the US 40 000 people die every year because they don´t have access to basic healthcare and those deaths are by design. Everything else you said is also extremely missleading. To think that the US is more free than Sweden is truly delusional.
@Marcus The idea of property and that you can own a chunk of the country you live in or a chunk of nature that used to be free for all and prevent anyone else from going there, is a bit weird. If you are a Swede, you also know that there is a differene between private property and owning land but yet you pretend they are the same. They are not. Your argument that you should be free to take the freedom to roam away from others (by buying property) is just silly. That is not how freedom works as you well know.
@Marcus The state dealing with issues that should not be optional is not a problem. It's not like having the elderly or sick not being taken care off is a feature.
The main difference between USA and Sweden is that in USA the focus is on the right to do whatever you want while in Sweden there is more focus on the freedom of not having bad things done to you. USA also focus more on protecting corporations profit while in Sweden there is more focus in protecting the individual from being exploited by the corporations.
I start to love my own country even more when I hear other people talking about it. Lol. Maybe I take it for granted but, it really is one of the best places to live in the world.
We all do! I took Aus for granted until Covid hit and the country went mental… miss what it used to be! Sweden really feels like home! ❤️

I have lived in both the USA (10 years) and Sweden (7 years so far) and Sweden is a far better place to live. The land belongs to all Swedish people not just the few. It's safe, friendly and clean. You work less, play more, much longer vacation and thus have a much better lifestyle. Family friendly policies, healthcare for everyone - a real paradise.
Maybe Freedom To Roam can teach Americans what true freedom is?

Agree, Freedom is the right to use, not the right to own. Ownership reduces everyone's right to enjoy a location (product or service) and limits it to just a select few which is why l pray that when we go to the stars and start settling other planets they are settled in the name of & for the use of all humanity not just one nation. Earth should be open to all humanity to travel and enjoy, not walled off with with lines on a map because who gave anyone the right to own what was here before we arrived and will be here after we leave. If you say God, he gave it to us as a guardianship to use & protect and we have abused that right and therefore have forfeited it.
What is true freedom?
In economic freedom, Sweden and the US are about equal, after socialist countries such as Denmark, Finland and Iceland. Only the last Soviet state of Norway is a little behind. The difference is that in the US companies are taxed heavily and in Sweden the working class is taxed heavily.
The US does not have nearly as much privately owned land as Sweden has as a percentage. That is why Swedish forests are so well managed. Compare with the fishing in the seas that no one owns, if I do not take, someone else will take.
The right to roam works because so few use it. Guess what it would look like if Sweden had a population of 100,000,000 people who have holidays in the forest instead of the Mediterranean or Thailand.
We have the same here in Finland. And it also includes picking wild berries or mushroom and fishing on somebody elses land.

I'm also Australian and my son and his Swedish wife and 2 kids live in Stockholm, so we like to visit when we can. .
Fika is sacred. . You NEVER rush fika. . It's relaxed and leisurely. . A fantastic way to unwind if you are at work, or to socialize if you are with friends or family. . I love it.
There's also a joke about Swedes - but especially those from Stockholm. .
During COVID, people were asked to keep 1.5 metres apart (5 feet). . The people from Stockholm joke that they can't wait for this rule to be dropped so they can go back to their NORMAL distance of 5 metres (16 feet) apart.

Stockholm is honestly the last place in Sweden that would make that joke. The northern half of Sweden though is very well known for being sparsely populated, the people are a lot more reserved too. Everything is a lot calmer and less complicated up there. That’s the more appropriate location for that joke :)

@@nightsgrow6575 I am from North Sweden and I don't think we are more reserved then other places in Sweden. I would say that people from country side of North Sweden is more genuine.
The food is healthy because we don’t fry our food. In school every child learn the dish model ”tallriksmodellen” 1/3 carbohydrate, 1/3 proteins and 1/3 of vegetables. Now it is more like 1/4 carbohydrate, 1/4 proteins and 1/2 vegetables.
We don’t eat a lots of carbohydrate for breakfast as you do. That’s why there is always room for ”fika” 😅
The Freedom to roam also includes picking berries and mushrooms for personal consumption. My personal favourites are skogshallon and smultron. If you have not tried them yet, please do! It is a taste-explosion that goes far beyond anything you can buy in a store. It is the taste of Swedish summer.
Will have to give it a try! Josie’s dad loves to go to the forest and pick mushrooms! They’re delicious! I’ll have to ask him which ones he’s picking as I’m not sure of the name 😋

We have the freedom to roam in Norway too. Same rules. I might add: you can also go paddling in a canoe or kajak on any body of water, whoever owns it. And the coast line is free for all

In Sweden you are allowed to temporarily park and use any private jetty, e.g. for sunbathing or regular bathing; as long as it's not close to a dwelling and don't block the owner

I absolutely love the freedom to roam! That's maybe the biggest reason I probably never could leave Sweden. Especially since I love making videos about nature! ☺️

Not to the same extent as in Sweden though.. for example you're not allowed to park your campervan by a lake or wherever you want and stay the night. You have to stay in designated campsites 😊
What we swedes take for granted is something that isn't usual or even existing in other countries. Just take tap water. I've had foreign people visiting my home , and they just couldn't understand that we had the same high quality fresh water in our toilets and garden hoses as in the water tap in the kitchen. So we are extremely spoiled when it comes to clean water and fresh air. That is one of the many things that we need to take care of. Good video,nice,simple and informative. And by the way,I have an accent in which your southern girlfriend wouldn't understand. 🙂🙂
Same with us here in Canada - fresh water is one thing we have in abundance... Although I wouldn't drink from the toilet, my dog doesn't seem to complain... :)
Omg! The water here is so good! We in Aus can also drink the water but it just doesn’t taste as good as it does here in Sweden. I remember when we were back in Aus, Josie told me our water was terrible compared to Sweden. I didn’t realise how right she was until I got here and tried it. 🥰
The taste or quality of water depends on the source. In America if your home is served by treated water your hoses and toilets usually get the same treated water.

I dont know Sweden but in Finland you can roam and also pick berries and mushrooms freely. As much as you like, and our forests are full of blueberries and mushrooms august-november. Just 150 meters away of anyones yard, makes sense...

@Margareta Holmgren It didn’t become an actual law until 1994 in Sweden, before that it was something more like a customary law with very old traditions based on that was not explicitly forbidden was allowed.
Even the expression itself was not minted until the 1940’s at least in Sweden
@Margareta Holmgren from that era is also lot of common ideology, such as equality and taking care of those who cant do it them self. Thats the base why nordic countries are happiest plases to live.

The “free to roam” is also a Norwegian right. It’s an interesting concept. I like the idea of land being available to all, as long as the visitors are respectful. Swedes have that respect. It’s a cultural difference between Scandinavian countries and other European culture countries.

Yes, all the Nordics have it. Although I heard the Danish variation is slightly more restricted.
@@mendamend it’s an excellent right but I don’t see it being viable in some countries where respect for your community and others is replaced by “it’s all about me”.
In the 90's we had subtitles on every english speaking movie, and not dubbed like some other countries do. May seem like a small thing but this was a superb practise on the english language everytime you watched a movie. So its a bit sad to see how every movie for kids is being dubbed with swedish voice actors these days.
Yeah, makes total sense! If there is a movie in Spanish, French, Swedish, Korean, etc.. I would always rather watch in the original language with subtitles. So much better and definitely helps you learn as you said 👍 thanks for watching! ❤️
Dubbing has only occurred in children's programs and children's films. That has always been the case.
I learned English from the fresh prince of bel air 😂
When I grew up in Sweden during the 90's, everything was dubbed in Swedish when it came to kids shows.. And by kids shows I mean anything that isn't teen focused and shows for the 20's and up folks.. Those always had subtitles..
I however never had cable so that might be the reason why we've had different experiences..
90's :) It has been subtitles for a long time. I'm from early 70's and can't remember any dubbed movie.
Another thing I like is that it's easy to get around by bike, walking or public transportation, especially in the largest cities. I live and work in central Gothenburg, and have absolutely no need for a car.
So true, public transport is great in Sweden! And so much better for the environment than everyone driving 😄
"In Denmark they have pretty similar language". I had a good, warmhearted laugh after that:) For me as a Finn it's very different language than swedish.
@torivarnor However, even Danes sometimes say that their own babies have trouble learning the language. It doesn't help that it's germanic. I've lived in Sweden most of my life and speak Swedish fluently, but have a lot of trouble with Danish.
Let me tell you we in Sweden hade hard time to understand Dannisch People way harder than understand Norway speech
However it is a fact that the languages spoken in Sweden Norway and Denmark are pretty similar
It all depends on where in sweden you're from though. Like someone from skåne will understand danish better than someone from Norrbotten, only because it's closer. People from Skåne go to Denmark alot 😄

The thing with fika isn’t what you drink or eat… well it is, but I think the break from work or everyday hassle is the most important thing with fika here. Woe the office manager trying to cut the fika break short! He or she better have a GOOD reason to dare come and say ”you can’t do this now” or mutiny will ensue. Those 15-20 mins are sacred!

I'm a swede.. :D (Well my grandmother on my father's side was an American, though) When ever I feel angry at the politicians or something I hear in the news. When I get sick of the stupidity some swedes can utter and I get, like, "what is wrong with Sweden?! I'll move to Iceland, now!"... I can just go and watch some of all the videos of Americans that live here and all you do is telling the world how great it is here... And that gives me the perspective I need. It calms me and I'm not gonna move to Iceland any more.. Its too windy anyways.. :)

One wonderfull thing about allemansrätten is all the established trails with shelters strewn across Sweden. I can recommend taking a stroll in fyledalen in tomelilla. Wonderfull in spring

What south Sweden don't have is Midnight sun. It is magical. I just love it. Nothing like that. I don't think it is much colder in North Sweden compared to South Sweden.
its around 6 plus degrees in southern sweden and here in kiruna in the north its minus 31 thats a quite big difference hehe !
The summers are warmer in the southern half of Sweden. The east coast south of Stockholm in particular has a lot of sun and a much better summer climate than further north. I have experienced both variants. Summer also lasts a month longer, at least.
Enough with sunlight from 3 in the morning to 22 in the evening. When I was a kid there was no daylight saving time and then it got dark already at 21. It was very cozy with warm, dark summer evenings I remember.
@@freyjulundr He talked about ther summer. I live in Västerås and it us days when it is colder here then at my parents that live in the middle of Lappland.
@@weronicaswonder8156 I'm in southern Finland, Tampere (Tammerfors) and the winters certainly are harsher in the north. Of course from time to time the temperatures sort of flip and it's colder here than in Lapland. Even much colder but it'll only ever last a few days.
A lot of Danes loves Sweden and have a house there.
I would say the Freedom to Roam is part of the “Frihet under ansvar” (Freedom with Responsibilities) concept that is a big part of all the nordic cultures.
It means that people have fairly extensive freedoms in what they are allowed to do, but with that freedom comes the fairly deeply ingrained expectation that you won’t abuse that freedom to cause damage to people or property.
Which in turn I suspect comes from our climate and sparsely populated countryside. Just the weather is harsh enough that it is more beneficial to be helpful to people you meet than to try and use or abuse them, because it will benefit both of you. And if you are not helpful, you might get turned away from a lodging or be denied help, which is potentially lethal for about 5 months of the year just from exposure to the elements.
That doesn’t stop some people from being both/either inconsiderable assholes who leave trash at a camping site, or use/abuse guests or people they meet, but the majority of people will still honor the social contract of being generally helpful.

I think the reason why we sound so different (southern Sweden compared to the rest of the country) is that we became Swedes VERY recently.

The freedom to roam in Sweden blew my American wife's mind when she visited Sweden the first time. We were driving through Sweden on the highway and she saw a random little lake about a kilometer away in the distance, down some hills and next to a small forest. So I just turned off the highway, found my way down to the lake, parked the car and walked her to the lake.
She was all like "no, stop, what if we're on someone's land, won't they get mad?", so I told her about allemansrätten and she couldn't believe that everyone has the right to do that in Sweden, roam nature, find a lake, pick and eat some blueberries, go for a swim, set up camp for the night, safely make a small fire.
Here in the US where I've lived for that past eight years people quite literally run the risk of getting shot and killed if they do that on private property. See a pretty lake in the distance? Good luck getting to explore it other than at best in a small designated park area where it's crowded, dirty and you have no privacy. The rest is private land and no one is allowed to enter. Even when it's state or government land and it's not being used for anything you can't enter it unless there's a designated park area or rest stop or similar.
I wish we had it here in Denmark. But I guess it's because we are a lot smaller in land size.
Yeah! It’s unbelievable for people from places that don’t have it! We don’t have it in Australia but you would most likely still get greeted with a friendly smile. Maybe a few questions to what you were doing on their land but certainly not greeted with a gun pointing at you 😂

Re the size, if you're in Malmö, Rome is only 100km further away than Kiruna. I've never been able to get my head around that one.

Freedom to roam, or allemannsretten is probably one of the worst things to lose for Swedes and Norwegians. I guess that not many S&Ns think about this, but I can assure that most of us would cry out loud if this was taken away.

Who in Sweden does FIKA for 15 minutes. It's unheard of.
Fika is at minimum 30min and up to 4 hours. 4 hours with friends that is.

I can say without a doubt that the weather in the summer is way better up in the north then it is in the south. I am born in skåne, Landskrona and have lived in both Malmö and Gothenburg for more than half of my 55 years on this planet. Now I live in Luleå way up north and by the sea and every year we are amongst top 3 in sun hours list. A list of places in sweden where you get the most hours of the sun in the summer. And up here we still have the 4 propper seasons of the year.
Compared to Malmö and Göteborg on the west coas we have very little rain and bad weather. Sometimes the summer weather here is even hotter then it is down south. But if you have never lived or visited up her you won´t know that. My first summer here I was so suprised by the wather here and during my 21 years up here there has been maybe 3 bad summers in total. But never as bad as down in the south. So it may suprise people how good weather we actually have here to people in the south. And the midnight sun is amazing once you adapt to it. 😄

There many Good places in Sweden. As trailrunner Kullaberg is very nice in Southern Sweden. :) And we have many nice longer routes you can walk as well all over the country

My village in central Sweden would often invite the citizens to run out in the woods and pick lingonberries during their spare time, and then sell those lingonberries for money.
I would sometimes spontaneously do that in the forests around my house, and that almost felt like a job, because I could earn many hundreds of SEK in one day from that.
It´s good that they invite ppl to pick berries. Every year they say 95% of all berries are left in the forest. 300-600 million tons of blueberries are left to just rotten.
I love these videos that say Swedes likes this and that because my Swedish boyfriend and his family as well as their friends and neighbors are the absolute opposite LOL.

The freedom to roam is very old and dates back to when it was longer then a days walk between larger setlments, and instead of funding taverns or cloisters to host people that needed to travel (tax sheriffs, pilgrims etc) you were allowed to camp for a night on anyones land

One extra thing with the freedom to roam: you are sllowed to pick berries and mushrooms from the forest floor for your own use. You can pick up dead branches and pinecones and such. You are not allowed to take living wood or damage trees however.

I am so glad i live in Scandinavia. We have so much freedom compare to "The Land of The Free"..
Beside that, here in Scandinavia we also take free education and healthcare for granted. :) (mostly because we believe the people shall have more then a strong military back from their own tax money)
Also, ecerything that has to do with school is free (books, pencils, notebooks, erasers etc.) Even lunch every day is free 😄

The north of Sweden is much nicer in the summer. Just the fact that it get dark in the south makes it not feel like summer at all.
Being from Aus, even in summer, it’s pitch black by 9:30pm. To be in the South and there still be a little blue in the sky at 2am tripped me out 🤪😂😂 I can’t wait to make it up North and experience a true midnight sun 🙌

I’ve only made it as far up as Idre! It’s absolutely beautiful up in the wilderness though: We’re about to head up North on a 7 day road trip so hopefully can make it a little further this time!

IT's quite funny with the camping vans, there's pretty much a whole generation of swedes who sold their apartments and got camper vans when they retired, so you'll see a lot of people in their 60-70's with camping vans

I got a friend that speak Älvdalska and another Malungsmål, I have it very hard to understand them when they speak to their families. But normal accents that doesn´t sound like foreign languages, like skånska (Scania-accent) and norrländska/accent of the north (I know there are different kinds also; )) I have no problem to understand. Im a Stockholmer btw..

Because it mentions kabab pizza, something any Swede under that age of 70 would call a stereotypical Swedish food, something that only exists in this country because of two separate waves of immigration. The pickled haring is in all likely hood from Germany to begin with not Sweden, the potatoes that are traditional come from the Americas. The fika started because one of our kings spent a lot of time in what is now Turkey and he brought Arabic coffee with him. Mulit culturalism goes all the way back to, at least, the viking era (DNA Tests show that in the major port cities like Visby there lived free men from as far away as modern day Tunisia and Irak). Allemansrätten (Freedom to roam) does have limits, specifically regarding private property. If the owner of a private plot of land says you can't enter or use it, *you cannot enter or use it.* This weekend a woman was convicted of home invasion for ignoring that part of it - she refused to listen to her neighbor telling her to stop taking her dog for walks on his lawn (she even climbed his fence when he put one up). So if the owner tells you to skedaddle, do so. :-)
You are clearly not from Sweden. Allemansrätten has nothing to do with somebody's lawn. Of course people don't have the right to set up camp in somebody's lawn.

Those things are governed by law, not by the owner. Do you think people in Sweden have "keep out" signs on their lawns to keep people out or that people would enter other people's lawns if there was not a sign? The owner of the land doesn't decide what you or I can do on it. The law does.
You can absolutely not use someones lawn. If you want to set up a tent for the night you should do it out of sight from the nearest house.
