    Joan Sims, a timeless talent, left us 20 years ago, and her personal choices, including not marrying, were rightfully hers. Let's celebrate her career and the joy she brought to audiences, respecting the privacy she held dear. 🌹 #hourglass #thenandnow #diedin2023

      @@bob23301I never married, either, and you'd be surprised at the nosy people who stick their horns into my personal life, and ask when I'm going to be tying the knot. For one thing I have no intention of being divorced or cheated on. Plus, as a Christian man, I have never believed in sex before marriage as it is a sin in God's sight. I DO have a female neighbor whom I like to do things with, but I don't consider her a romantic partner. And growing up in a dysfunctional family with alcoholic parents has left me mentally ill with depression and trust issues, and I never had children because I feel strongly that no human or animal deserves abuse. Plus , Christ died for my sins, and being single leaves me free to serve Him.

      Marriage is no prize, as it can end the woman's life, but for many women it is having children which is the real joy.
      Lots of men don't marry, and this is rarely a topic for a youtube video.

    Joaney was beautiful. In the Carry On's she went from hot totty (Constable) to harridan housewife (Screaming) but in reality she was always beautiful. I wish they could have featured her more as Aunt Rene in Only Fools as she would have made a great link to Del and Rodney's mum. Maybe she simply wasn't up to the job by then.
    Whatever, she was gorgeous, talented and we still miss her.

      I get you, yes, but actually, unlike Hattie and Barbara, who seemed forced to play the same kind of role in the Carry On's, the shrewish wife could then jump into being a temptress harlot in "Follow That Camel", so hugely disguised in 'Doctor' that throughout my early years I didn't even know she was in, the pursued by Sid James in "Loving" when he wasn't married to her, and the Queen who can get her own back on him when he was Henry VIII. I think her Aunt Rene role wasn't given prominence all down to the creator's decisions and nothing to do with her 'not being up to the job'. Don't think that would ever be a thing with Joanie.

    In those days we worked a five day/night shift system. Five days work, three and a half days off. It was during this time that Davey used to often travel down to London, and stay over with Joan and his Brother John. I always wondered why she was not in the last series of Worzel Gummidge, perhaps it was her health issues at the time?

    • @GrilloTheFlightless
      @GrilloTheFlightless 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      It’s possible.
      Peter Eade died in 1979 and Hattie Jaques died in 1980, so it was around the time she was in Gummidge, although it could also just be due to other commitments as she did appear in other shows in 1980, ‘81 and ‘82. Although they were more in the way as one-off guest roles and I would have thought she’d have preferred the stability of a recurring role in a series. Perhaps it was easier to cope with shorter roles during this time.
      There may have been theatre commitments. I don’t know what she was doing on stage at the time, if anything.
      If we speculate, it does seem very possible that she either needed time out to recover from the shock of her string of losses, or else that her alcohol addiction caused problems. But I don’t expect we’ll ever know for sure. There could have been other reasons.

      @@GrilloTheFlightless Yes it could have been any number of things, She really was a main character in Worzel Gummidge,and it was never the same after she left, of course there are not many actors or producers alive from the show so we will never really know the reason for her absence

  • @GrilloTheFlightless
    @GrilloTheFlightless 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    I could have just as easily read the Wikipedia entry for Joan Sims as it seems like most of this video was quoting from it. The insistence on pronouncing Jaques in the French manner was a little jarring, since Hattie and everyone who knew her pronounced it ‘Jakes’. Anyone who actually knows about the subject at hand would have known this. Perhaps the voice is computerised? I dont know. Very little mentioned here is new information.
    I don’t know why expected better, given the rather crass rear-augmented photo used in the thumbnail. I’m a fool to myself really.

    Joan was a warm, kind, funny, lovely person. Many of us have our own private sadness.....and perhaps Joan had hers. In an industry not famous for its kindness, I never heard a bad word about her.....and that's good enough for me. The video is rubbish.
