Defa Lucy is a major success in Latin America, in México some of the extra like line was sold by Walmart, by the name Brittany. Success!!! They have a doll in wheelchair, 3 mermaids, a bob haircut, a "training dog", but I never, ever seen the g*n one. I suppose is for asiatic market. P. D. You look lovely with the longer hair.

Apparently in Europe the cops don't have guns at all. In America pretty much all of our cops carry handguns. That being said American police using guns isn't a popular idea.
I checked for chinese uniforms of female police officers and the wear light blue blouses, which are quite close to the one shown in the pic. So they are indeed produced for the chinese market.

at this point, the only thing keeping barbie afloat is brand recognition, and I guess Mattel is content with that? Like, no matter how cheap and terrible they look, a barbie doll will ALWAYS be the first thing a parent reaches for when shopping for their daughters, whereas younger doll lines, (Monster High, LOL Surprise) bend easier when it comes to fan expectations because those lines are driven more by a fanbase that genuinely likes them, and not some unsuspecting mom who's looking for a last minute birthday present.
Not true. Barbie has a 65 year fan base....and she bought by far more than just mom's looking for a toy. Barbie is collected by millions of doll collectors around the world, has a four generation fan base, and a place in history. Let's see if your defa Lucy knock offs will be around in 65 years.

I now have 7 I believe and am very happy with them. I do have a question: what makes a doll a knockoff and not a new brand? I would not consider Steffi Love a knock-off at this point. I understand Defa is using packaging very close to Barbie lines, but the dolls are actually very different in style and especially the facial screenings. What would it take for them to not be considered a knockoff or clone?
There's actually something really similar to this in the Transformers fandom of all things! Knockoffs are typically straight up copies of 'official' toys, while third party figures are their own things. (Own method of transformation, construction, etc. They do still *look* like official characters but the engineering is usually unique.) So my guess is if they diversified their packaging and came out with their own doll lines that weren't reminiscent of existing Barbie lines maybe that would push them beyond the knockoff label?
Similarly, some of the third party Transformers figures I own are definitely much better quality than some of the official figures too!

In the Lego collecting community there are areas like this too. There are some brands that make 'mimic' sets but other non-Lego brands who are doing their own designs. You'll always have the Lego Purists, of course, yet it's becoming more acceptable to collect/enjoy non-Lego brands as well. I think as quality of the mainline brands declines while their prices continue to rise, it's making more and more toy collectors/enjoyers question their loyalty.
A good Lego example is the brand Loz. Loz makes their own designs and the quality of the blocks/construction are right up there with Lego. Ten years ago it wasn't the case at all. The pieces wouldn't fit together properly. The plastic felt 'off' somehow. The designs were derivative at best. Nowadays a lof of the off-brands are improving in ways Lego just doesn't feel the need to. In a way I understand their thinking because a million dollar company has to move slowly, there's a lot of people counting on them to do a good job.
I think your question is a really good one and I've seen lots of conversation in the past five years about it. It will be interesting to see what we all collectively decide is that line.

Interesting to see all the Americans get up in arms (pun intended) when Joey questions this doll having a GIGANTIC MACHINE GUN. Aside from UK police officers not using guns, that weapon shown is for a soldier going to war, not a cop writing tickets.

American here and I really don’t like the idea of dolls having realistic guns. Especially for young kids. I’m not sure if these dolls are in America at all since I haven’t seen them but American kids don’t need dolls with realistic guns, especially because it could encourage them to play with their parents guns.. 😓
I'm American and I do think it's odd they released a doll with a gun, especially with the epidemic of gun violence in the US. I will say Barbie has had a lot of scandals herself. One or two missteps/questionable releases isn't enough imo to completely discount a doll brand.

Defa lucy dolls have been around for a while but only recently people have noticed them. I have to say I'm very tempted to buy one. Also there's one doll with the rainbow jacket that's been selling for $30+ that's how much the demand is for her. And a second wave of Xtra dolls are coming out soon, I've seen leaked photos of them. Barbie better step up her game in the basic play line

In the UK police officers don't have guns.
My head goes straight to the US, their gun laws and police brutality. Not something I want to see in a police officer toy. 🙈 Maybe if she was a soldier I would understand. In my country, I can't imagine seeing a "normal" police officer with a gun. It's a yikes for me too. 😅

Yeah I definitely agree that the police doll with the gun is definitely a bit problematic especially since here in the uk police don’t carry around guns and there’s way more stricter rules on them. I think a lot of people who don’t find this problematic are from countries where it’s normal for police to have guns just my thoughts though

i miss the bend and snap legs as well, but if toy companies are going to bring them back, they need to do it correctly.

I like the Defa Lucy dolls. I will probably buy some of them. I love that the faces are not pixlated and that they have long good quality hair.
The only one i want is the one the one with the bob and denim outfit. Don’t want to deal with Shein or Temu to buy them. I heard bad things about those sites.

I love the breath of fresh air Defa Lucy has brought to my fashion doll collecting.
However nothing comes close to competing with Barbie Looks dolls. They are the best thing Mattel has given us this century, with the diverse made to move bodies, saran hair, unique face sculpts, not a pixel in sight & at a great price!
I'm actually surprised Mattel has continued with another wave of them, it seems out of character at this point for Mattel to continue making something so good .... in my opinion of course.
I would actually buy some Defa Lucy dolls, but the only place I've found to buy them is Temu, and the prices are kinda high for "knock off" Barbies. I want the redhead, but she's the most at $15 USD, but no articulation. The Extra dolls with articulation are $30 USD.

Please do Steffilove next.Barbie can only be scared if a new doll line starts a Classic princess line like barbie/Mattel did in the mid 90s and early 2000s. A doll line called Steffi however sometimes gets prefered over Barbie from many Kids that i know..shes quote good quality and has loads of acessories for half Barbies price..and has mermaid,ballerina and princess dolls.. something that barbie has forgotten to do since dreamtopia..wich was lacking price quality,articulation and accessory that other doll Lines or glorious Barbies of the past give you more.
I think they're cute and people love them because they're fresh and she's the IT girl atm but the quality of the hair is actually awful unless u get the "extra" line that comes with pets

From what Joey said in his edit video he doesn't seem to like Duffa Lucy doll company anymore and I agree even though I never heard of her before today.

Defa Lucy still have a long run, but I think it's good that some brand can give at least a small fraction of competition for Barbie, because they just don't care anymore

Depictions of police with guns is like having a doctor with lobotomy tools. It’s happened but no respectable region would b okay with it. The fact u know police with guns is extremely dangerous adds another similarity 2 the analogy. I’m glad that being such a popular worldwide brand, barbie has 2 face big regulations about what is permissible 2 depict. I can expect this from Defa Lucy bc I’m sure the standards r just lower where they’re often sold (online in shoddy areas).

I don’t know why Defa Lucy is trending. Her quality is still not that good. Her hair will frizz up within months and her plastic feels cheap. Okay she got bend n snap legs but it’s only one snap. Tbh even when Barbie had it, there was only two snaps and it didn’t stay in place like the dolls from 60s- mid 80s. Yes the paint is more clean but it’s still basic makeup. The clothes are of better taste level but still made from cheap material. Most of Defa Lucy fashions are meh or not current.
I think she’s rising because she can do the same amount as Barbie but with half the cost. I’m not defending Barbie because she can still do better. Still I hope knock offs will light Mattel’s ass to make Barbie better again.

Fr tho, I absolutely love the designs of Defa Lucy. Especially the "Barbie Extra" brunette with the ponytail and the girl with the bobline from the "Fashion Doll/Barbie Looks" series. However, I'm hesitant to buy them because I have heard about concerns of stuff from Temu and Shein not being tested for international safety standards, so they might contain too high amounts of certain toxic materials (such as lead, which has been found in clothes from Shein). Idk if my worries are valid if I'm overreacting 🤷🏻♀️
I am from Guatemala. Defa Lucy are sold as Brittany, they have better quality and half price but they all have the same face. They do a Ken doll very rare.
Despite all the sudden Defa Lucy hoopla, I have to be honest: with some exceptions, I still prefer Barbie. The DL screening for their Fashionista-level dolls is FAR superior to Mattel's, and the quality and styling on some of the clothes is better. But the prices (at least in the US) are not much better than Mattel, especially considering shipping, and the lack of diversity in skin tone, hair, body sizes, sculpts and disabilities is enough to keep me from starting a collection (although I would like some of the clothes). And where's their Ken?!
Having said that, the one Defa Lucy I REALLY wanted (with the black bob haircut, denim jacket & skirt) has been sold out for weeks, lol...😏

I think the doll with the gun isn't a part of Defa Lucy, but the other knock off version with stick legs. The face mold and thin legs scream the fake line.
I purchased a Defa Lucy two weeks ago. While she has a beautiful face, I'm still deciding if I like the blue and white hair. I'm not a fan of Rapunzel-length hair. I usually cut all my dolls hair to a more realistic length. I might try re-rooting it to a more natural color. I thought her body was cheap and it was floppy. I have re-bodied her with a MTM body. I prefer Barbie myself. I likely will not buy any more Defa Lucy dolls.
In Mexico and other LA countries Defa Lucy dolls are named Brittany. They are an exclusive brand for Walmart and Bodega Aurrera, a low-cost supermarket chain owned by Walmart.

I have 2 Defa Lucys and want to buy more! Indeed, the quality is much better than modern Barbies. I was also surprised by this fact. Now I'm waiting for new types of dolls to appear. I'm from Russia. There, new products go on sale late and there is not such variety as in other countries.
i wouldn't have any issues with the defa lucy police officer doll, IF she had a smaller gun instead of the HUGE gun that she was pictured with.
Pullip Melissa is a police themed doll and comes with a pistol. But pullips are meant to be for adults so I don’t see a problem with it tbh

I quite like there fashions. Like I think that was my complaint with the Barbie extra line too it just felt like they just tried to slap together to many looks sometimes. The Defa Lucy ones look less tacky for sure in my opinion. The denim outfits are so adorable like Barbie please this is what we want no more of this screen printed on details or plastic molded tops. Like the outfits are quite simple but they work really well.

I really like defa lucy's sets, they come in more realistic colors compared to the all-pink from barbie. I own a defa lucy's horse and a helicopter, and they are waaaay more detailed than the ones from barbie

Yeah, the gun thing is definitely weird; it's not even a hand gun in a hip holster, but a full-on semi-automatic whatever. I haven't seen these in the U.S. either, fwiw.
So, just have to say, I do not like the Defa Lucys' faces. They all seem to have this vapid/snooty expression that reminds me of Ann Coulter. If they had MTM bodies I might consider buying one, but it would be a body/clothing donor and ... they don't have them, so... 🤷🏻♀

I just received my 3 Defa Lucy dolls today! As expected, boxes damaged due to Shein's shipping methods, but I just looooove the dolls. I don't normally unbox, but what would you guys suggest? Keep inside the box or take out?
I would not suggest buying the doll with the gun for a child, no. But I see no problem if you are a collector that are into guns and action.
If you don't prefer guns, it's your choice if you don't like a doll or even don't want to buy the doll.
