    Wife and I got married there 40 years ago in a little Church that has become the Pep store later in years. Rich history of the Boer war and the British. The old prison is there where the Boers dug a tunnel to the river to escape.
    Thanks for showing

      It's quite incredible that a church would become a shop in later years, we haven't seen that very often on our trips. Thank you for sharing that special memory of yours with us. 💒 We believe the history runs deep in this town and area, but it was just too busy on the day of our visit to explore in-depth. 🚙🤷🏻‍♂️

    Here in the Western Cape mostly Xhosas work, and they cant wait for Xmas, when they can go "home" ,meaning Whittlesea......Like we say in Afrikaans: Huis is waar jou hart is,,,,,en jou hart is maar waar jy grootgeword het......❤

      Indeed! 👌🏻 Like you, wer'e also in the Western Cape and I'm always fascinated when I chat to the folks going home to all areas of the Eastern Cape over December. They look forward to that the whole year and it's quite a trek for some of them with all the things they take home from the big city. Home is indeed where one's roots are!

      Whittlesea is what it is, you said it. 🚙🤷🏻‍♂️ The main road was crazy busy on that Saturday afternoon. It was quite late in the day too and I was rather surprised that there was still so much activity. The dam was fortunately spectacular and made our visit very special. 🌊🤩

    Hi guys more added to my education loved the drone footage really reminds of my time in SA the landscape dry in winter waterdown dam was impressive. The picnic area with concrete seats and tables is SA to me so nice and civilised with amazing views the views across the meilie fields stunning 36 villages around a small town unbelievable high street looks busy and thriving WSU had lovely grounds and great facilities love the charming sign Cloakrooms this looks like a new place to me I see positive signs education is top priority. Nice new structures. Fantastic video I had a feeling I'd heard of Whittlesea before and my wife reminded me we pass it on the way up to Yorkshire its now on the outskirts of Peterborough where we stop at the big services for coffee ☕ small world. Thanks for taking me along cheerio till the next one

    • @DustBugsTravel
      @DustBugsTravel  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      That dam was rather impressive, we couldn't believe it when that huge body of water came into view! 🤩🌊 I have no doubt that Whittlesea in the UK looks a tad different from our Whittlesea, but it was good to see it and I'm glad you came along for the ride! That main road was next-level busy on that Saturday afternoon! 😳 The Whittlesea campus of the Walter Sisulu University showed that education is a priority for the folks in the rural Eastern Cape and we loved that! 🎓

  • @annawitter5161
    @annawitter5161 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Wow! What a beautiful dam. Yes 1958 was a long time ago. Its the year before I was born! Thanks guys, now I feel so old!!😆never heard of Whittlesea before. What a discovery. Quite a wealthy looking place, or comparatively.

    • @DustBugsTravel
      @DustBugsTravel  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yup! There was a time that I would've thought a 1958 structure was ancient, but no more! We see more and more bridges and buildings and things that are very close to our birth years too and it does make us feel rather advanced in years if I'm honest. Not much we can do about that though! 😨🤷🏻‍♂️ The Waterdown Dam was a spectacular sight as we were happily driving along the road and it really made our visit to Whittlesea! Judging by the acitvity in town that Saturday afternoon, quite a bit of cash was being spent in the local shops and establishments. 💸🚙

  • @1812nico
    @1812nico ปีที่แล้ว +5

    Hi you two! Thank you for another interesting trip. Nature in that part of our country is really stunning, and your drone views showed it at its best! What a huge blue dam that Waterdown is! It is a pity that that a place surrounded by such beautiful landscape as Whittlesea is not better kept (managed?). The WSU campus was a nice surprise. I did not know it had a campus there. It is however good to see that a "war born" place developed into a place 0f learning, The bust of Walter Sisulu was a welcome sight. It may signify the start of a new part of the centuries old history.
    I'm just back from the Waterberg so my connection with you is safe again and I am ready for the next trip!
    Keep safe!

    • @DustBugsTravel
      @DustBugsTravel  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      You certainly sound well-rested, so I'm sure you had a fabulous trip! 🚙👌🏻 The dam was gorgeous in its shades of blue, we just loved it! 🌊🤩 The Eastern Cape landscape was fantastic as always, but as far as the town goes, it was simply too busy and chaotic to see anything. 🤷🏻‍♂️ The campus was a welcome sight and we were very grateful to be given the opportunity to drive through. I'm always happy to see education being facilitated. 🎓📚 Keep the wifi connected, Saturday is around the corner and your seat is ready!

  • @sicko_the_ew
    @sicko_the_ew ปีที่แล้ว +2

    The way to see the brown of the "brown part of the year" is as "all the possible shades of brown". That's what a Dutch friend of mine once taught me to see. Look that way, and you start to see there's never a uniform, flat brown colour to the land, here, like in Holland you can sometimes get endless flat green to the point where you need to escape from it (well that's how my friend felt). There are pale, nearly white browns, there are reds, there are olive green shrubs, rocks etc, to break it up, but also a very wide range of different grasses (and fynbos, in the mountains, and toward the Cape.)

    • @DustBugsTravel
      @DustBugsTravel  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      The natural beauty in this country of ours is beyond any belief, no matter where we travel. We love all shades and shapes of it. From bare and barren to green and lush to every shade of blue in the ocean and in the dam just before we reached Whittlesea. Any traveller's dream! 🤩🇿🇦

    We used to visit Whittlelsea in the 1970s. It was a vibrant little town, with a small but effective business district.

    • @DustBugsTravel

Not a place one would want to visit again in a hurry 😜 but seeing the WSU campus was a pleasant surprise and the Waterdown Dam was a delight - you whipped out your drone just as I’d thought, “this is a perfect opportunity for some drone footage” and you made it a reality!
