    Per a couple quite frankly dumb comments on here, those bows have been on the porch since at least the ‘60’s. So you’re telling me after 61 years they suddenly became a trip hazard? Nah, they’ll stay.

      Robert just don't invite the people over that think they will trip on the buckle lol seriously though, it's your porch you are comfortable with what you are doing, really people if you are here just to criticize him, then just don't watch! Love from Alberta 🇨🇦

      Straddle over it the legs of a stand/step stool holding a potted Christmas cactus. That what grandma did. ;)

    My family lived in a Sears Home when my 5 siblings and I were growing up. It had a large front porch that bounced as we moved across it. One of my favorite memory is sitting on that front porch helping our momma snap bushell after bushell of green beans, shelling, peas, visiting with neighbors and their kids. That porch bounced and the swing squeaked. Mom had worn a rut in the wood with her rocker. Always thought they were supposed to do that. Our swing is starting to squeak. That squeak and crickets. Country bliss.
    Our dog Molly's a border collar and whatever mix. She's suppose to be my pet but she spent the morning at the cattle pins herding calves. No training just doing what she supposed to. So is your B. Pay no attention to the nay sayers. Doing fantastic job

I love redoing furniture and have , with my husband redid an old farm house that was not near as nice as yours. Climbing on roof to repair and paint with kohl seal, new porch out of reused old boards, painting floors and walls etc. loved it. Keep it up Robert. We probably drive less than 50 or 60 miles from “The Old Byrd Farm”. 👏👏👏

    Australian cattle dogs are very loyal & protective of their owner. My parents only ever had healers, had race horses. You could get onto the property but trying to leave was another thing, . would bail the offender ( anyone not a regular visitor) until you were rescued. One in particular was such a character, that if my father kissed my stepmom, he would get in between them & growl & push my father away. It wasn't a "I will bite you" growl it was "get away from my mum" or "she's mine, not yours" lol. Nice to see the house get some TLC cheers from Australia 🇦🇺🐨👍😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊

    Hello from Alabama. Robert, you are doing a great job! I look forward to each new video. Not all people understand the purpose of preserving history. Your farm tells us an interesting story about the past. Every imperfection has a story to tell. Being a teacher and from the South, I can see the beauty of old southern homes and cemeteries. I enjoy standing back and wondering what history I can learn from places like your farm. You are very blessed to know some of the previous owners, so they share some of those stories. Not everyone can see the beauty the Old Byrd Farm holds. Keep on doing what you are doing. I can't wait to see what you are going to do on the inside of the house! God Bless

    I lived in an old farm house with a similar front porch when I was a kid. There were two boards at one end of the porch that were rotting and loose...that was our favorite spot to play. My sister and I would take turns jumping on those boards and they never gave away. I’m sure I would not remember that porch as well as I do if my dad would have fixed those boards. Keep the flaws Robert, those are the things remembered. ❤️

    Have an old farmhouse and the porch boards had the same flex until we nailed them down as well. My farmhouse is maybe 1910 to 1920 and in north west mountains of North Carolina..but lots of family in Georgia. Grandpa house is in griffin...uncles in Jackson..Cleveland as well. Lots of beautiful old homes in Georgia. But a lot of the towns south of Atlanta are so ghetto and a little scary but would love to own one of the homes there if not for that fact..they are so cheap too, because the area I guess. So much history.

    I’m dying watching Baloo! He’s just like a bulldog going after that nail gun. 😂
    My back porch is my sanctuary so a fresh sweeping or cleaning up of junk the pig has messed up put there is a nice moral booster. Sometimes I feel like I can’t get anything done so I grab hold of the tiniest win I can find and hang on for dear life. It sounds stupid to some but it gets some of us through the day :)
    Oh and my dad always said that when he was a kid, they played under the house all summer. He said it was the coolest place on the property...except maybe the creek but I remember seeing cottonmouths almost every time I went to their creek in warm weather. They were quite common at the very least. I did play in it once or twice as a kid. It was coooolllllddd!

    Robert, a suggestion. I was looking at the porch rail that is still there. Railing should be at least 2" to 3"off the floor to let debris and rain water flow. Saves your decking from rotting also.

    • @THEOLDBYRDFARMVLOG
      @THEOLDBYRDFARMVLOG  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Correct, it was originally spaced about 2 inches off the floor but has fallen. That’s actually another porch project I intend to tackle soon. On that old part of the porch.... we’ll fix em up the right way on the new sections when they get built of course as well.

  • @lancej0911
    @lancej0911 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Not sure if this has already been mentioned, but you can take a saw and cut the bead off of the old floor boards where it has bulked up. Then it will lay down flush so you can nail it. You don’t even have to remove the floor board to achieve this. Basically you are removing the part of the board that fits into the groove of the next board. I hope this makes sense.. I’m not a professional. Just wanted to share what I’ve done to remedy the bulking floors on my old porch.

    I think I remember from an earlier video where you went under that porch and determined that there was too long of a span between piers under there, and you wanted to add one more in the middle, but maybe I'm remembering wrong. But nailing down the boards seems to have done the trick.

    • @THEOLDBYRDFARMVLOG
      @THEOLDBYRDFARMVLOG  3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      No, you’re right. It is such a long span with no support underneath. However that wasn’t the bounce problem it was the loose boards. I’ll probably still frame it a bit more.

      Just keep on keepin on and it’ll all be just fine and dandy, there’s always somebody that thinks they know best but they ain’t there pulling out splinters and changing tires and putting their heart and soul into the work, nor do they have your dream. One day people will come and see that place and be awestruck because you didn’t give up. Thank you Robert and your friends for both channels I love both of them

    Good morning Robert, I have been following you for some time and just wanted to tell you I really enjoy seeing what you are doing and the progress around the farm. I feel it's your property and your choice what you do and how you do it, I'm just an interested spectator! Your place - your rules. Unless you ask for opinions or suggestions why would anyone else feel they should tell you what to do? I love what you do and choose to watch you and your 'helpers' keep doing it!!

      The very nature of a comment section is to invite comments. Some will invariably be opinionated. That's the nature of the beast. If content providers don't want to hear people's opinions, then they just disable the comment section. It's all very well and good for Robert to do things his own way, but if he ever needs to have the building inspected and passed, he'll surely hear some very opinionated comments that he won't be able to ignore.

      @@alkirby3690 yeah, it would fail a modern inspection just by the building methods used in the 1880’s....

    Since the boards weren't tacked down why didn't you adjust the boards that are sticking up out towards the end so they would lay down? It may have been that way for a while but I'm sure it's not honest to the original integrity of the porch. That's dangerous to have that tripping hazard. Plus, it would just look better. And I just noticed that at the other end of the porch the boards are spaced. You can just push them closer to get rid of the "uprising". It was 100° here in New Mexico today.

      The spaced boards at the end are not on that span. That area needs to be replaced. As far as adjusting the boards, I was originally going to do that but explained why I did not on the video.

    cattle dogs are herders and protectors. Our girl Emily stays right by my hubby every minute of the day and even waits for me if I stay up downstairs after my hubby has gone to bed. She lies right by my side of the bed until I come up and I usually trip over her in the dark.

    Brother I am not trying to tell you how to do home repair but I have a tip for the job you are working on Screws are the best for porches and decks cause they grip tighter than nails. Nails work loose from the weight of the traffic back and forth. Screws stay put .

    Back in 1880, the didn't have tread wood, they used cider wood, termites don't like the smell. My house was cedar wood. I have a feeling you are going hit a treasury .
    I pray you do.
