Question/Suggestion for a new TH-cam video from You: ASMRP(or ASMPR?) Microphones and PreAmps and Software conbos: whats the best and also most affordable at the same time?.... consider watching the Superbowl Michelob ULTRA Pure Gold organic beer Commercial Zoe Kravitz did, (Daughter of Lenny Kravitz), ...plenty of youtube copies still out there , since sadly the original youtube video of that commercial is gone though from the beer Website,...and that one had the best sound .... ..crazy stuff,.... and fascinating....

Honestly, a great snare drum at the ready is not a bad idea. It's not necessary to record, however it can definitely improve the overall sound of the kit.

Steinberg 8 or 4 ins and outs interface
      A better Computer
      Cubase pro
      The white Yamaha monitors
Clean sounding Analog Mixer with faders
      Tube Compressor
      Analog 32 band Eq
      A better sampler
I'll have to be pretty cheap to get that, but I'll probebly do as I always do, buy broken stuff cheap, and fix it by any means. Guess I'd have room for Telecaster and a Korg pedal

For DAW, I'm spending $60 of my own cash for Reaper, leaving me more for gear.

    • @billfox3761
      @billfox3761 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

I love Reaper and think it's great for a private project studio. But if you want to be able to take in/dole out work with commercial studios, then I think Protools should seriously be considered. Porting work back and forth becomes easy. Of course, it all depends on what kind of studio you intend to be. YMMV.

    • @noisesoundtonevibe
      @noisesoundtonevibe 5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

Not only is it very affordable, it's a powerhouse. I used to run Pro Tools, but I'm a convert. Super stable, flexible, supports VST and AU plugins, functions only found in the HD version of Pro Tools (like VCAs)... Amazing. The only thing I miss from Pro Tools is Lo-Fi, but I've got so much more!!!

Reaper is perfectly suited for the professional and commercial studio. Sound designers for the film and gaming industry use it. It's also been used on Top 40 releases. It provides a level of optimization and customization that is perfect for creative outliers. I've seen interviews with Michael Brauer and Bob Clearmountain where they've stated that the can't accomplish in the box with ProTools what they can in the analogue domain. These issues are minimized or don't exist in Reaper. We use Reaper the majority of the time but will also jump into Logic Pro X and ProTools as needed per client requirements. With perhaps the exception of Audacity and GarageBand, any of the major DAWs are capable of producing professional results. All that said, learn the schnizzle out of the DAWs that you use and remember to be responsive to your client's needs, including the ability to work in multiple DAWs. - chaz

Very cool video Warren! Fun going shopping with you & seeing your quality/cost ratio choices! Excellent set up for a commercially viable studio that can do anything, and of course, the entire situation could be at least half that cost if someone was setting up a project studio for themselves & only tracking one or two people at a time. Great work!

Mine's a little different as I already have a lot of the essentials. I went with some things I need to fill gaps:
-Zoom H4n Pro: having a handy field recorder is great. Also a fun thing to use as a stereo room mic.
-Sennheiser e 604 Tom Mic 3-pack with Cables: I really like the sound of these on toms, and I need some nicer drum mics.
-AKG C 451 B Stereo Pair: Excellent overheads and room mics, also great for stereo on a piano.
-AKG D12 VR: I have a Shure Beta 52 for inside the kick, but the D12 outside is great.
-Behringer P2 Ultra-Compact Personal In-Ear Monitor Amplifier: I have 4 aux outs from my mixer I use for headphones, but they are mono only, so without going into another mixer or a headphone amp, the artists only get 1 side of the phones working. This is a great low cost solution to that that also gives the artists hands on volume attenuation!
-Universal Audio Apollo x4 12x18 Thunderbolt 3 Audio Interface with UAD DSP: I am already on the UA ecosystem, but I really want this desktop unit to give me a few things I am missing such as a few more unison preamps, the monitor controller functions, and the talkback mic.
-I used the same headphones as you
-I used the same mic stands as you
My setup above misses a good vocal mic, needs a couple more mics for the drums/amps, and a ribbon mic, but all of which I already have (Minus the ribbon, but I use my SM7b for vocals and my C414 for stuff you may want a ribbon on)

Very fun video and so interesting to hear your thought process on each purchase. With so much marketing out there, it's easy for people to get distracted from the core elements that make a studio work. I appreciate how this video cuts through the noise and focuses on essentials!
I built my studio up over the past two years and my main regret as I've learned more was spending too much on cheap equipment early on instead of getting a smaller number of more reliable items.
Thanks as ever for your encouraging and informative videos!

I've been on a Peaky Blinders binge lately, and Warren, you need to get in touch with their producers. You could be a doppelganger for Tommy Shelby, to distract his enemies while he sets a plan in motion. You'll likely be killed in the show, but there will at least be some awesome rock music playing in the background when it happens. It's worth a shot!

Waves should take note that out of all their plugins, you chose the MV2, which I also love and I totally get why you would pick that one.
I haven't found a single plugin from anyone that does what the MV2 can do on its own, you need to setup a complex chain with dozens of parameters.
I think it's the best plugin I have ever seen that is so flexible but also so powerful that only has 2 controls plus output gain.

Studio One. On sale right now for 300, usually 400 dollars. The more I learn about mixing, the more I find myself reaching for the stock plug ins! Add on the Convology Reverb pack, 80 -- some of the best sounding reverbs I've ever heard.
Arturia Keystep32. 115. Not a keyboardist, but I wouldn't live without it now because sometimes you just need a way to get the midi into the DAW.
And by the way: Go To Sweetwater's STORE! It's an experience not to be missed! The food. Free games. It's like a mall. And every single staff person I talked to was really nice and super helpful! (Ft. Wayne, Indiana)

Hello Warren! Great video. A studio with quality equipment for around $5000 is amazing. I recently bought a second handed Yamaha DD-55 digital drum kit. It’s really awesome and beside the drumsticks, the set is complete! It’s a vintage piece of equipment but the sound is really cool 😎 You won’t believe what I’ve paid for it...

I'm not building from scratch, so I added some upgrades.
Royer R-121 with Sling Shock: I have a lesser ribbon, so might as well upgrade to the standard. Universal Audio Apollo x4: I could use an upgrade from my Saffire Pro 26. I also included a purpose built desk since that might help me organize my space but probably not something most people should focus on.

The AT vocal mics are nice. Something else people might want to check out in a similar range for good vocal sound is the Sterling Audio ST159. And a lot of the MXL mics punch above their weight, too. I've compared some of them against a U87, and been pretty impressed.

Hmm... 5 Headphones but no device to distribute & amplify 5 Monitor signals... I would have chosen the Presonus Studiolive 16.0.2 mixer instead of the Audient interfaces because it has 12 Preamps, a built in 12x12 interface, a headphone out plus 4 monitor outs AND comes with a free copy of the Studio One Artist DAW. OK, it’s a light Version of Studio one but definitely good enough to start with.

I was trying to mix on a set of AKG-Q701s (which are not inexpensive for the home guys/gals), and it makes mixing so much easier....or I should I say it's starting to make my mixes better. =)

This is fantastic, I'm kind of in a situation where I can't make a definitive decision. I'm a drummer and producer with a small treated room, I use the ID44 and love it, I get by with the 4 pres but am really torn between colour (ie different pres) or expansion like the ASP. It's a really tough choice, swaying towards quality over quantity but then I'd love the option to record a full kit. Been looking at the Warm Audio stuff and even the Golden Age Project stuff too... decisions decisions... sadly I am in the UK so this doesn't apply
Some things for my list though would be:
    Royer R10
    Lewitt 040 Matched
    Neumann TLM103
    Warm Audio wa12
    Warm Stereo 273
    ASP 880
    Chameleon Labs 7721 compressor
    FMR audio RNLA compressor

You get 24 great sounding mic pre's and 8 auxs for headphones and your talent can control their own headphone mix on their phone or iPad. You can even use it to track on and record direct to a USB if you want, plus, it gives you the ability to do live on site recordings. Oh wait, that's exactly what I did buy, lol.
I'd also buy an electric drum kit (no hate please) because space and volume are an issue for me :/

Fun thought exercise! I dig a lot of these choices, especially the mic selection. But I'd strongly recommend Logic Pro over Pro Tools if we're talking Mac. If we're talking PC, I like Cubase. A ton of home studio owners use Logic Pro for some very good reasons - it's way, way more bang for your buck compared to Pro Tools. I don't think Logic Pro gets anywhere near enough love on this channel - it's $199. Three years of Pro Tools is, what, over $1,200? And it's a pain in the ass.

I know that lending out $5000 worth of products isn't quite feasible, but I would love to see a studio for $5k challenge where you actually get a chance to use it and see how it sounds. It might be interesting to see how that affects the choices made.

Also, a lot of these companies want to be competitive so maybe Sweetwater could match a deal that Guitar Center has. You can get an SM 57 or 58 with a stand and a cable for $110. The stand is cheap in that the mic boom will lower while you're playing, Just slightly. I fix that by putting a $5 5 lb weight on the tail end and now it works perfect.
