- A lion can get very moody and other pride members have to be careful when approaching the resident male lion, especially young male cubs. One wrong look and that might be last day.

I think a lot of the time they're not using their claws when striking, call me crazy but only when it's serious and a less curious situation is when I think they're smacking with claws. I think they smack even harder or at least faster with them retracted, less retort from the other cat with claws as well..less risk of injury. Just my opinion.
I've had a lot of cats of the small variety and they quickly learn that they don't have to go so hard on the others, although they can get carried away. Looks like the lion didn't get a good read on her when she approached. Maybe the wind just blew her scent the other direction.
