  • In this exciting video, I discuss Husker Du's 1985 masterpiece New Day Rising. I also touch upon what I think critics get wrong about the band which resulted in my initial misunderstanding of them, and how my perception and love of their work has grown and changed over the years!! Please enjoy!

I came to Husker Du recently, after hearing how influential they were for years. After listening to everything, New Day rising was, I thought, their best overall album. Lots of top level songs. Terms of psychic warfare, books about ufos, girl who lives on heaven hill, celebrated summer.
Green eyes is my fav du song, and I lean to the Hart end of things, though I like some of Bob Mould's Sugar records.
    Thx for video.

Thank you very much!! I go back and forth all the time over which their best album is, but as I've gotten older, I become more of a Grant person. His last album The Argument is absolutely incredible. And I agree about Sugar!

Believe it or not, I've totally neglected Husker Du. Many years ago I listened to Zen Arcade and, though I could hear it was a decent album, it didn't really connect with me and I never investigated further. Perhaps I was a little suspicious of them because they're "a critic's band." However, the way you're describing their music and this album, makes me think I'll dig 'em and like Funkadelic, they're not a band summed up by a few canonized releases but a full plunge into their discography. So once again, one of your videos is making me do another deep dive and this one is a long time coming indeed...!!

Thank you so much Edwin!! I can’t imagine hearing Zen Arcade outside of a really specific context, so it doesn’t surprise me that it didn’t really work for you. I have no idea what I would have thought of it even if I first heard it at 23 or 24. What’s interesting is that the song that Christgau singled out as their finest (Turn On The News) both Grant and Bob considered not that great, and years later Grant even talked about not allowing the critics to warp his own internal process of making creative decisions. So, he really pushed away from the critical darling stuff. Also, and I think you’d appreciate this, the working classness of them is no posturing. Grant’s Dad was a graphic designer (that’s how Grant learned to do what he did), they printed flyers at his Mom’s job, they toured all sorts of obscure venues before real touring for underground bands existed etc. There is very much a folk aspect of bringing music to the people. And all of that was WAY before the critics showed up. As far as Grant’s music goes, I think you’d love Good News For Modern Man (especially since you like Cheap Trick), and his final album The Argument is one of my favorites. For Husker Du, I would recommend Everything Falls Apart, Metal Circus, and definitely Flip Your Wig. In fact, kick things off with the song Divide And Conquer and read the lyrics, and be amazed that Bob Mould wrote it in 1985, because he was a good 30 years ahead of his time, it is an absolutely incredible song. Then check out their early single In A Free Land, one of the most melodic and furious punk songs ever recorded. From there the white hot intensity of Land Speed Record is really bracing and worth hearing, the best parts of Candy Apple Grey are great (though overall it’s my least favorite), and Warehouse Songs And Stories is a fantastic single album hiding inside of a double (and way weirder production that New Day Rising). Anyway, thank you for watching, and I hope you enjoy the deep dive!

I like New Day's harshy fizzy, trebly production-sound
