Thank you for being honest about your mistakes and showing us the real boat life. Because of your generosity in sharing your experience, lots of DIY'ers will not do that same mistake. Can't wait to see the final result, Cheers, Richard
That’s what w hope to accomplish by putting up our failures and successes, I think it’s more productive to show what we did all the way through to help people understand!
Its so much better watching you guys work together and enjoying your work , than watching other channels complain and argue. Your boat is awesome so are you two.
I did the same thing painting my boat last year. I was yelling at the screen saying you got to tip vertically. Cause I made the exact same mistakes. Another thing with that paint is the bumpers will rub the paint off. You gotta let it cure for like a week or so. Awesome video and I hope this benefits a lot of people 👍🏽
Camille you have displayed the finest arches I have ever seen on a tube boat paint. They are so nice, grace personified. You footsies could pass for hood ornaments.
I was thinking back to all the roll and tip videos and I cant recall a single one of them saying any thing about thinning the paint or tipping vertically as apposed to horizontally. Don't you hate half assed information! I'm glad you got it figured though looked good. I cant wait to see the gold leaf, never seen it done so put in as much info as you can.
When my man paints his boat's topsides, he always uses 10% Owatrol Oil and 90% Toplac paint. Roller DOWN and brush it out DOWN with a good quality Harris brush. If the preparation is done correctly, then one coat is all that is necessary. This year will be the third boat he has done this way. This Info offered for anyone who may be interested.
Don’t mean to be so negative but a Common mistake is to apply the paint to heavily. Roll the paint on thinner. You should almost see through it. Thinner coats are always better and give far superior finish. Cleanliness is paramount. Wipe the boat down with a good quality thinner. Don’t spare the cloths. Change them frequently. Any dirt or dust left on the surface will show on the finished paint work. Good luck. I enjoy you videos.
Looks awesome from here ! Of course I have some comments also. Where the dings went into the glass (pass the gel coat) would have sealed them with even just epoxy faring compound. When wiping down to get ready for paint always check with the paint manufacture for what products can be used. Since the paint job came out lookin good, acetone must be compatible. After the faring, sanding and wipe down I would have used a compatible primer to give the paint something to bond with. Always use the paint company's products for the thinner and/or brushing. Also when you start the varnishing or future painting you need to keep a "wet edge". That's where you drop the brush into the varnish/paint that you just laid down and feather into where you've been, hope that makes sense ! Love your attitude and work ethic of get it done. looking forward to more sailing and projects. Can't wait to see her out on the water for your next trip. Take these next words as something good, hope you have both had the sickness and have moved on and not living as fearful people. Best of everything to the three of you and your families.
James, In the future, add the thinner to the can your base came out of. Stir and scrape down All the solids into the thinner then add to the mix. For ant two component coating, mix components prior to thinning. Good finishes are achieved through multiple thin (millage and viscosity) coats.
You’ve learned a lot from this and have a plan forward so I’m not trying to change that but to offer another perspective. I’ve used interlux Brightside and don’t like it. Runs even without thinning. Better is Interlux Perfection. It’s 2-part so need ventilation or respirator. Also more expensive but amazing in finish. Most important is dust control. Next to a road in a windy yard is a problem. Can you put plastic walls around the hull to dampen wind? Fiberglass has static that attracts dust. Wipe hull with isopropyl alcohol on clean rag before roll and tip to temporarily neutralize the static that attracts dust. Tip with badger hair brush no matter what it costs. Don’t thin and roll thin and Tip horizontal to not vertical but keep excessive liquid off brush. V tipping is to overcompensate for low viscosity and excess liquid on brush.
did you guys ever end up doing the gold leaf you talked about on the end of the video? i can't find anything on your channel about it and would love to see how it turned out.
Quick tip, when it’s starts running like that, when it’s still wet, take a second roller and have no paint on it, or very little paint on it, and roll the runs out without adding more paint, and making it worse. Hell of a lot better then sanding! Lol
Sailor James let me clear up what I am saying maybe, let the other roller soak up the build up when the paint on the hull is wet, basically as you are rolling it, or after you do your sectionor area of paint, go back and look for drips, and smooth them out with the roller that doesn’t have all the paint on it.
Thinking of it, but if you are tipping it on your last coat, wouldn’t that hide most imperfections? Huge runs I know it wouldn’t cover that most likely, so is there really a need to sand that style of painting? Just a thought
As always, you guys got a like from me! I love watching all of your videos! I like the way you guys accomplish tasks together and the fact that things don't have to be did by professionals. What really matters most is it's solid work and your happy with the results. Keep the videos coming! I have a 1970 Dufour Arpege 30. I wish it had a tall cabin like the Alberg. But, I can't complain I only paid a $1000 for it.
Hi James and Camille, Good paint job, after the school of hard knocks .Did you put 3 coats on?.The goldleaf is a nice classic touch for a classic Alberg.
Well done to you both. Great video and appreciate showing the whole process warts and all. I will be doing the same job soon and this certainly helps greatly. Thank you. It looks fantastic.
Never painted a boat before either, but I'm inclined to remove the tape before the paint completely dries - so it doesnt also peel paint from the hull. Just a guess. Nice color correction.
Damn!! That paint is expensive af. Up here in Canada some of us use Tremclad if were on a budget. An oil based paint that dries hard as a rock and only $55 a gallon found at any hardware store. Your boat looks beautiful. Did you dip the tipping brush in anything ? What type of thinner did you use? I want to paint mine asap. You two rock
Great vid and love ya honesty in all you show ....I live on the North sea and that definitely isnt its colour (with a U ) Black and Grey(With an E) more like....love the music what is it ?

He promised Camille sex ⚓♋🤣 Oh yeah, also I've been waiting to see someone paint their topsides so thanks for showing how it's done. A lotta work I see.
Wouldn't it be nice if West Marine and Dollar Tree got their prices mixed up? I did a little glass yesterday as it finally got warm enough. 30% chance of rain less than .01in overnight, and it rained cats and dogs. I'm afraid to go look. LOL
James your rollers are too thick. checkout boatworkstoday they explain to use short nap rollers. You should also not load the rollers heavely. Good luck

Good job guys. It looks so good l cannot wait for
the gold leaf.
Yeah it’s gonna look amazing!
Good job there James, I would have used a smaller 4” roller, you would have better control of the amount of paint you apply.
Like the color. Stay safe.
You did a great job. I have used good quality foam brushes.
Nice job!
Looks good guys.

no because then you get a lot of build up, you can't overwork the surface you have to let the thinner do its job

Hi James and Camille, Good paint job, after the school of hard knocks .Did you put 3 coats on?.The goldleaf is a nice classic touch for a classic Alberg.
No due to time and money we only got one coat on, gonna do three next time for sure

Hi guys don’t beat yourselves up over your paint work it’ll look a million dollars when the reflection in water hits the hull 👍👍
Yeah I kept staring at it and noticing things and Brad from VHBY came by and said “it will all disappear when she is in the water”
Never painted a boat before either, but I'm inclined to remove the tape before the paint completely dries - so it doesnt also peel paint from the hull. Just a guess. Nice color correction.
We left it on because we had to do several coats and had an olfa blade handy when we removed it
Andy at “Boatworks Today” has all the information you need on ‘glass & paint!

Sailor James hi yep colder than a witches tit anytime of year lol ...Can you tell me what the music was ?
Agree, that first blue was horrible. Good choice to take the time and extra money to redo it.
How can you tell if you’ve gotten any paint on your body.
Does it matter?

Anyone know what music and artist they used 0:53 ? obviously its not copyrighted lol cheers.

A bit like watching paint dry this one.
I know it's too late but did you ever tossed the idea of spraying the paint on? Even with Wagner electric painter?
The yard wouldn’t allow us to spray it, I have an electric 360 sprayer that I used on my engine bay that would have made it so easy

Boatworks today is also a great source of info for painting. Im getting ready to do the same. Good luck
Could you have sprayed it?
The yard wouldn’t allow clients to spray their own boats and we couldn’t afford to have them spray it
